Hike Camelback Mountain early, or not at all.
Climb Echo Canyon or Cholla at dawn with a litre of water per person — the city's signature summit, and the one that rescues unprepared hikers every summer. Obey trail closures on extreme-heat days.

You have just landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor, about 12 miles southwest of a desert city built on patios, pools and Camelback light — Old Town galleries and western storefronts, a resort corridor up Scottsdale Road, and saguaro desert at the city's edge. This guide covers the real ride in (there is no light rail to Scottsdale, and Scottsdale Airport takes no airlines), where to sleep from a Camelback resort to a Fashion Square motel, the 13.97% hotel tax stack, the first Southwestern dinner, and the canyon, red rock and balloon days that fill day two.
You just landed in Scottsdale. Sky Harbor sits about 12 miles southwest of Old Town — the move is a taxi at about US$40 or a ride app or Waymo at about US$30, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps and ride apps, hotel tax at 13.97% plus resort fees at the big properties, no light rail into the city, and the Grand Canyon, Sedona and dawn balloon days that sell out first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

One highway run northeast, past Camelback Mountain. Do not let a booking site send you to Scottsdale Airport — SDL is private and charter only; every airline flight uses PHX.
An Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer US trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
Pick your ride before you land: a taxi or Waymo for the door, the Sky Train combo only with light bags
Resort gates and casita layouts confuse first-night drivers
And save the big walk for the cool of the evening
AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
In a hurry? Taxi is the fastest option listed, at about 25 min.
Watching the budget? Sky Train, light rail and bus is the cheapest option listed, at US$4.
Heavy bags, a group, or a late arrival? Taxi takes you door to door — about US$40, about 25 min.
The rank sits outside Terminals 3 and 4; city pricing is US$5 for the first mile and US$2.30 a mile after, with a US$15 minimum — about US$40 to Old Town before tip
Uber, Lyft and Waymo pick up at the airport's rideshare areas; Waymo runs driverless around the clock and holds steady prices when app fares surge — reports run US$25 to US$65, about US$30 typical to Old Town
A driver waiting in arrivals at a fixed quote, flight tracked; private shuttles quote from about US$43 to US$51 to Scottsdale addresses
Free PHX Sky Train to the 44th Street station, Valley Metro light rail east, then a bus north into Scottsdale — light rail does not reach Scottsdale; two changes and a walk, so light bags only

Scottsdale's one transit fact shapes everything: Valley Metro light rail stops at the Phoenix and Tempe line and never reaches the city. From PHX you ride the road — or stitch together the free Sky Train, the light rail and a bus north. The rides in from PHX:
Choose a taxi or ride app with luggage or a late landing — Waymo serves PHX around the clock at steady prices. The transit combo is honest budget travel, not a luggage route: two changes and a walk at the far end.
Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep for Taliesin West, the Preserve and day trips, not inside Old Town.
In town, Old Town is compact and walkable. The Scottsdale Trolley runs three fare-free routes every 20 minutes on weekdays. Valley Metro buses cost US$2 a ride, and ride apps and Waymo fill every gap.
Start in Old Town, around Scottsdale Road and Main Street: western storefronts, Arts District galleries, and the Little Red Schoolhouse of 1909, now the historical museum. Thursday evenings bring the ArtWalk, when galleries stay open late.
Step into Western Spirit, Scottsdale's Museum of the West, then cross to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Center for the Performing Arts on the Civic Center lawns. Stroll the Arizona Canal at the Waterfront at golden hour, when Camelback turns pink.
Climb Echo Canyon or Cholla at dawn with a litre of water per person — the city's signature summit, and the one that rescues unprepared hikers every summer. Obey trail closures on extreme-heat days.
Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in north Scottsdale is desert architecture at its source — book the guided tour ahead, it sells out in season.
Saguaros, bajadas and easy loop trails at the city's wild edge — go at first light and let the desert do the talking.
Browse GetYourGuide for desert days and city tours, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Sleep at 6000 East Camelback Road, in Paradise Valley at the foot of Camelback Mountain — 585 rooms, nine pools, a spa and a golf course spread across 250 acres. Book it for the full resort version of Scottsdale.

Stay at 6850 East Main Street, in the heart of Old Town — the 1956 mid-century landmark, restored rather than replaced, with two pools, the ZuZu restaurant and the galleries a stroll away. Book it for design history you can sleep in, at half the resort price.

Bed down at 6848 East Camelback Road, beside Fashion Square — 122 plain, modern rooms, an outdoor pool, pets free and Old Town a mile west. Book it for the location without the resort bill.
Base in Old Town on a first visit — restaurants, galleries and the trolley at your feet. The resort corridor up Scottsdale Road trades walkability for pools, golf and space. Remember the 13.97% tax stack and resort fees when comparing rates.
Book ahead for January to March, when events stack the calendar and rates spike.

Eat Southwestern first: mesquite smoke, green chile, corn and lime. Three first stops:
Map → Dine on modern Latin cooking beside the old mission — tableside guacamole, duck carnitas and a benchmark margarita list. Book ahead in season.
Map → Eat where Arizona cooking found its voice — vegetable-led menus from local farms and Arizona wines, in a small Craftsman Court room. Reserve; it seats few.
Map → Finish at the pink 1958 ice cream parlour — a Top Hat sundae at the soda counter, unchanged in all the ways that matter. Walk in and queue.

Three escapes run at three scales: the canyon, the red rocks and the dawn sky. All leave early.

A long guided day north: Sedona's red rocks and Oak Creek Canyon on the way up, then the South Rim — El Tovar, Hopi House and hours to walk the rim. Hotel pickup included, from about US$169. Check availability →

Eleven hours, small group: the Sinagua cliff dwellings of Montezuma Castle, then Bell Rock, the Chapel of the Holy Cross and Airport Mesa, with free time in Uptown Sedona. Rated 4.8, from about US$179. Check availability →

Three and a half hours at dawn: float over saguaros and mountain ranges for 45 to 60 minutes, landing to a champagne toast. Rated 4.8, from about US$225. Check availability →
Leave a spare day for the Apache Trail to Canyon Lake under your own steam.

October to April is the season the city is built for: days in the 20s Celsius, cool nights, and the event calendar stacked — Barrett-Jackson and the Phoenix Open in January and February, spring training through March. June to September is the honest warning on this page: highs well over 40°C, monsoon storms from July, and outdoor plans shrunk to dawn and dusk. Rates fall just as fast.
Money is simple: dollars, cards everywhere, and the 13.97% lodging tax on every room rate. A bus ride is US$2; dinner at The Mission US$40 to 70 a person before tax and tip.
A budget day at the motel, on buses and taco lunches: US$110 to 140. Mid-range — the Valley Ho, a guided day out, a good dinner: US$280 to 380. A splurge day at a Camelback resort passes US$700 in season.

Pack for fierce sun and cool desert nights: the list below is the whole game, plus a layer for after dark. This is the full list:
Add the Scottsdale extras: a wide-brim hat, a warm layer for winter evenings and dawn balloon flights, and shoes with grip for Camelback's granite.
! Check visa requirements before you fly

English runs Scottsdale, with Spanish close behind — the Valley sits 120 miles from the Mexican border, and its food and place names say so. Four phrases do most of the work:
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens need nothing but ID. Visa Waiver visitors — the UK, most of the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and others — enter for up to 90 days with an ESTA, which costs US$40.62 since 16 Oct 2026; apply only through the official CBP site, at least 72 hours ahead. Everyone else needs a B1/B2 visitor visa.
At Sky Harbor, CBP officers stamp you in — six months on a visa, 90 days on the waiver — and may ask where you are staying and when you leave. Keep your hotel address and onward ticket on your phone; an ESTA is an authorization to travel, not a guarantee of entry.
Summer highs pass 40°C and trail rescues are a weekly news item. Hike at dawn, carry a litre of water per person per hour, and never hike Camelback in afternoon heat. Trails close on extreme-heat days.
Old Town's entertainment district pours out late and busy; walk the lit main streets, keep valuables out of sight, and take a taxi, ride app or Waymo for the last stretch rather than walking dark residential streets.
Rattlesnakes, scorpions and javelinas share the Preserve and the resort edges. Stay on trail, watch where hands and feet go, shake out shoes left outside, and give every animal the right of way.
UV is fierce all year — sunscreen, hat and shade breaks are not optional. In monsoon season, never enter a flooded road or wash: desert water rises in minutes. For anything serious, dial 911.
The Sky Harbor run, the 13.97% hotel tax stack and the ESTA fee, in short.
Transfers checked against Phoenix Sky Harbor, Valley Metro and City of Scottsdale sources, October 2026; lodging taxes against the City of Scottsdale taxable activities listing and the Arizona Department of Revenue October 2026 transient lodging table; ESTA fee against the CBP Federal Register notice of 1 October 2026.
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), about 12 miles away. A taxi is about US$40, a ride app or Waymo about US$30, both about 25 minutes. The budget route — free Sky Train, light rail and a bus — is about US$4 and 75 minutes. Scottsdale Airport (SDL) is private and charter only.
13.97% — 7.27% Arizona state and Maricopa County transient tax, plus Scottsdale's 1.70% privilege tax and 5% transient lodging tax. It sits on top of the quoted rate, and resort fees are charged on top again at many properties.
October to April: warm days, cool nights and the full event season. June to September is extreme heat, with highs well over 40°C and monsoon storms from July — rooms are cheapest then, and days shrink to dawn and dusk.
Visa Waiver nationals enter for up to 90 days with an ESTA, US$40.62 since 16 October 2026 — apply on the official CBP site 72 hours ahead. Everyone else needs a B1/B2 visa. US citizens need only ID.
No — Valley Metro light rail never reaches Scottsdale. Old Town is walkable, the Scottsdale Trolley runs three free routes on weekdays, buses cost US$2, and ride apps and Waymo cover the resort corridor. Rent a car for Taliesin West, the Preserve and day trips.
With normal city care, yes — Old Town stays busy and well lit into the evening. The real hazards are heat and sun: hike at dawn, carry a litre of water per person per hour, and never enter a flooded road or wash in monsoon season.
Fares change — Sky Harbor, Valley Metro and your ride app always win.

Transfers against Sky Harbor and Valley Metro sources, October 2026: PHX is about 12 miles from Old Town, 25 minutes by road; taxi pricing follows the published US$5 first mile and US$2.30 a mile, US$15 minimum — about US$40 to Old Town; ride app and Waymo reports run US$25 to US$65, about US$30 typical. Light rail does not serve Scottsdale; SDL is private and charter only. Trolley against the City of Scottsdale transit page: three fare-free routes, 20-minute frequency, weekdays — older guides describing a daily downtown trolley with longer hours are out of date. Lodging tax conflict, printed in full: the city lists a 1.70% privilege tax plus a 5% transient tax, and the Arizona Department of Revenue October 2026 table gives 7.27% state and county transient tax — 13.97% total, as printed. Secondary sources conflict: one totals 12.20% using the 5.5% state rate alone, omitting the county share, and another lists the city privilege tax as 1.75%.
