St. Thomas: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Cyril E. King, minutes from Charlotte Amalie — the US Virgin Islands' harbour capital, where Danish warehouses line the waterfront, taxis run on per-person zone fares and traffic keeps left. This guide covers the ride in, where to sleep, the passport rule, the first conch and kallaloo, and the St. John and snorkel days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in St. Thomas. The airport sits minutes west of Charlotte Amalie — the move is the dispatcher's shared taxi, US$9 per person to town, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps, no passport needed for US citizens arriving direct, and the boat days that sell out first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Cyril E. King (STT), about 2 miles west of Charlotte Amalie The US Virgin Islands' main gateway: nonstop flights from mainland US cities and San Juan. Taxis meet every flight outside arrivals.
Getting in
Shared taxi US$9 per person to town, US$17 to Red Hook, 10 to 35 minutes Taxis charge regulated per-person zone fares, not metered rates. The dispatcher outside arrivals groups you by destination; bags cost extra.
Currency
US dollar (USD) the territory uses mainland money, cards and ATMs — Cards are accepted widely; carry small bills for safari taxis, ferries and beach chairs, where cash still rules.
Languages
English, with Virgin Islands Creole in everyday speech, and Spanish widely spoken English is official. A greeting first — good morning, good afternoon, good night — is local manners, not small talk.
Time zone
Atlantic Standard Time (UTC-4) all year the USVI does not change its clocks — That puts St. Thomas an hour ahead of US Eastern in winter and level with it in summer.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire, as on the mainland Roy Lester Schneider Regional Medical Center sits just east of Charlotte Amalie. Keep your insurer's number handy.
Plugs
US Type A and B sockets, 120 volts mainland plugs fit with no adapter — Visitors from outside North America need a standard US adapter. Outlets match the mainland exactly.
Tap water
The municipal supply is treated and drinkable in town; many locals filter or buy bottled Hotels will tell you their source — town supply or cistern. Buy sealed water for beach days if in doubt.
Tourist tax
12.5% hotel room tax on stays under 90 days and no general sales tax — The room tax is collected by the hotel on the gross rate. There is no separate departure tax on flights to the mainland; airport charges sit inside the ticket.
Best months
December to April dry, breezy and outside hurricane season — May and June keep the weather with thinner crowds. Hurricane season peaks August to October.

Settle in

Touch down at Cyril E. King and the island starts gently: one small terminal, the harbour in view, and Charlotte Amalie ten minutes east. The first hour is taxis, cash and one cultural setting — traffic drives on the left.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and messaging work from arrivals. Compare Saily and Yesim for a longer Caribbean run, though a mainland US plan usually works here as domestic.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Times are airport to city centre.

St. Thomas is 13 miles long and three wide, and almost every ride is a taxi ride: safari trucks and vans run the regulated zone system, per person by destination, with no Uber or Lyft on the island. The rides in from STT:

Choose the shared taxi for almost every arrival — it is the system the island runs on. Choose private when the group is four or the bags are many; the exclusive ride to Red Hook is US$90 for up to four. Bags add US$3 a piece.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first — and remember, traffic keeps left and town speeds are 20 mph.

In town, safari trucks loop the main roads for US$1 to 2 in cash, VITRAN buses cover the longer runs, and Charlotte Amalie itself is walked.

In the city

Walk the Charlotte Amalie waterfront and Main Street.

Start at the harbour where Danish free-port warehouses now hold the duty-free shops, then duck into the stone side alleys — Royal Dane Mall and Palm Passage.

Climb the 99 Steps and Government Hill.

Take the brick staircase the Danes built in the 1700s up past Haagensen House to Blackbeard's Castle hill, where the 1679 Skytsborg Tower watches the harbour.

Ride the Skyride to Paradise Point.

Lift off from Havensight for the harbour panorama and a bushwacker at the top bar. Time it for late afternoon.

Swim at Magens Bay before the ships peak.

Arrive early at the mile of north-shore white sand — US$7 entry for adults, children under 12 free, lifeguards and a beach bar. Walk to either end to leave the crowds behind.

Snorkel Coki Point and Coral World.

Pair the reef at Coki Beach — fish at wading depth, gear rented on the sand — with the observatory tower at Coral World Ocean Park, US$29 for adults.

Detour up Mountain Top for the banana daiquiri.

Drive to the island's high point at 1,547 feet for the famous daiquiri and the view down over Magens Bay, with Drake's Seat on the way down.

Browse GetYourGuide for island tours and boat days, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Best for best-value beachfront — every room on Lindbergh Bay, five minutes from the airport

Base by beach, not by map: Charlotte Amalie and Frenchman's Bay suit a first visit without a car, the East End suits sailors and St. John ferry days, and Lindbergh Bay suits a short stay built around the airport.

Book ahead for December to April, when snowbird season fills the island. Check whether the quote includes the 12.5% room tax and any resort fee before comparing prices.

Where to eat first

Caramelized fried plantains on a dark plate, a ripe plantain behind

Eat island first: conch fritters, kallaloo, saltfish and johnnycakes, fungi and fried plantains — then the rum drinks the island claims, the painkiller and the bushwacker. Three first stops: Gladys' Cafe, Royal Dane Mall, Charlotte Amalie. Eat where downtown eats — a stone-walled institution off Main Street serving conch in butter sauce, kallaloo and roti, with banana pancakes if the day starts there. Arrive before the cruise lunch rush.

The Greenhouse, Waterfront Highway, Charlotte Amalie.

Graze the harbour-facing tables for cracked conch and Caribbean lobster as the happy-hour crowd fills the waterfront. Book the rail seats at sunset.

Duffy's Love Shack, Red Hook.

Drink the East End's famous tiki pours in a parking-lot beach bar that outperforms its setting — volcano bowls and sailors off the St. John ferry. Go after a beach day, not before one.

Going independently, the Red Hook to Cruz Bay ferry is the island's best-value ticket: hourly, about 20 minutes, US$8.15 one way for non-resident adults, US$1 for children 2 to 11, bags US$4. The Charlotte Amalie waterfront ferry (US$13, 45 minutes) is seasonal — suspended 30 August to 31 October 2026, resuming 1 November.

When to go and what it costs

Yachts and cruise ships at anchor in Charlotte Amalie harbour, green hills behind

December to April is the classic season: trade winds, low humidity, calm seas and every boat running. May and June are the shoulder sweet spot. July to November sits inside hurricane season — officially June to November, peaking August to October — when prices drop and trip insurance stops being optional.

Budget in dollars, because everything is dollars. A safari ride is US$1 to 2; a taxi across town about US$10 a person; Magens Bay entry US$7; a Gladys' lunch US$20 to 30; a snorkel sail US$120 to 160. Tipping follows the mainland: 15 to 20 percent in restaurants, about 15 percent for guides.

A backpacker in a guesthouse, on safari trucks and food-truck lunches: US$120 to 160 a day — never a cheap island. Mid-range — a beach resort, one boat day, dinners in town: US$300 to 450 a day. A splurge day at Great Bay passes US$800.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for a beach island with strong sun and warm rain — the beach bag is the day bag here. This is the full list:

Add the St. Thomas extras: reef-safe sunscreen, which the national park and the boats ask for, a dry bag for ferry and catamaran days, and a light layer for air-conditioned restaurants and the evening harbour breeze.

Language, visa and entry

The 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie, a brick and stone staircase climbing between gardens

English runs the territory, in its Virgin Islands Creole flavour — fast, musical and full of island words, with Spanish everywhere in shops and kitchens. The custom that matters most is the greeting: say good morning, good afternoon or good night before any question, and the island answers in kind.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Good morninggreet first, alwaysThank youthanksHow much to town?the taxi fare questionWhere is the ferry?for Red Hook and Cruz Bay

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens travelling directly from the mainland or Puerto Rico need NO passport for the US Virgin Islands — but carry proof of citizenship, such as a raised-seal birth certificate, plus government photo ID, and expect CBP checks on departure. Since 7 May 2025, flying also needs a REAL ID-compliant licence or another TSA-accepted ID. A passport remains the simplest single document, and it is required for any side trip to the British Virgin Islands.

Non-US visitors enter under normal US rules: a visa, or an ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program — US$40.62 since 16 October 2026 — for stays up to 90 days. Permanent residents carry their green card. Returning to the mainland, US residents get a US$1,600 duty-free exemption after 48 hours in the territory.

Safety and health

Drive on the left, and look both ways twice

The USVI is the only US jurisdiction that drives on the left, in left-hand-drive cars — roads are steep and winding, and pedestrians should look right first at every crossing.

Swim the lifeguarded beaches and respect the reef

Magens Bay, Coki and Lindquist run lifeguards or marked swim areas; the north shore can build surf after storms. Never touch coral, give turtles their space, and wear reef-safe sunscreen.

Use the dispatcher taxis after dark

The regulated taxi system is the safe default at night — agree the zone fare before you ride, keep to lit waterfront streets, and let the hotel call the return car from Red Hook.

Plan for hurricanes in season and heat all year

June to November, track National Hurricane Center forecasts and buy insurance that covers disruption. All year, the sun at 18 degrees north burns fast — water, shade and a midday pause are health measures. For anything serious, dial 911.
