Chefchaouen: your first hour after landing

You have just landed in Tangier, bound for a town with no airport of its own — Chefchaouen waits two and a half hours up the Rif road. This guide covers the gateway choice between Tangier and Tetouan, the CTM coach and grand taxis, where to sleep from a spa riad to a family guesthouse, goat tagines and bissara, a first day from kasbah to sunset mosque, and the Akchour waterfalls that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Chefchaouen. Except you did not — there is no airport here, so the real arrival is Tangier, about 110 km away, then the CTM coach up the Rif road for about 85 MAD with a Saily eSIM live for the mountain drive, two and a half hours to the blue medina, and the guided day that sells out first — Akchour — worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
None in Chefchaouen Tangier (TNG) about 110 km, Tetouan (TTU) about 60 km — Tangier Ibn Battuta is the main gateway, with far more flights; Tetouan Sania Ramel is closer but has only a handful of routes, mostly to Spain and Belgium.
Getting in
CTM bus from Tangier about 85 MAD, grand taxi, private transfer There is no train station either. Buses and grand taxis climb into the Rif from Tangier and Tetouan; the CTM coach from Tangier takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.
Currency
Moroccan dirham (MAD) A closed currency — exchange or use ATMs on arrival. Cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants; the medina runs on cash.
Languages
Arabic (Darija) and Tamazight, with Spanish and French widely spoken The north was a Spanish protectorate, so Spanish often works better than English in Chefchaouen; hotel staff usually have some English.
Time zone
GMT+1 (Africa/Casablanca) Morocco stays on GMT+1 most of the year but drops to GMT for Ramadan — check your dates if travelling then.
Emergency
Police 19, ambulance and fire 15, gendarmerie 177 From a mobile, 112 also reaches the emergency services. The gendarmerie (177) covers roads and countryside outside town.
Plugs
Type C and E, 220V Round two-pin sockets, the same as most of Europe; US and UK travellers need an adapter.
Tap water
Spring-fed locals drink it, visitors often stick to bottled — The town water comes from the Ras el Maa spring and is treated, but a change of water upsets some stomachs; bottled water is cheap.
Tourist tax
About 5 to 40 MAD per person per night, by property class Two small taxes combine: the taxe de séjour (about 2 to 30 MAD by class) and the tourism promotion tax (about 1 to 15 MAD). Under-12s are exempt.
Best months
March to May, September to November Warm days, clear mountain light and flowing waterfalls in spring; autumn is mild and quiet after the summer crowds.

Settle in

Chefchaouen has no airport and no railway — the last leg is always a road climb into the Rif. Most arrivals land at Tangier and take the CTM coach up through Tetouan, about two and a half hours to the bus station below the medina.

Set up your data before the bus leaves: a Yesim eSIM loads a Morocco data plan in minutes, so maps, CTM times and your riad's directions work on the mountain road. For a longer Morocco trip, compare Saily and Airalo before you buy.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

Check the tax line when the riad quotes your rate: the two tourist taxes ride on top — a few dirhams in a simple guesthouse, up to about 40 MAD a person at the top end, usually settled in cash.

If a delayed flight wrecked the Tangier arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes before you rebook the bus.

Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport terminal, the main gateway for Chefchaouen

There is no way to fly or ride a train into Chefchaouen itself. The gateways are Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG), about 110 km north-west with the widest choice of European flights, and Tetouan Sania Ramel (TTU), about 60 km away with a small route map. From either, the Rif road does the rest. The onward rides are these:

Inside Chefchaouen, your feet do everything: the medina is pedestrian, steep and stepped, and cars stop at its gates. Petit taxis — small and blue — run the new town and the run down to the bus station; agree the fare before you get in. Luggage is the one real chore: ask your riad to send a porter to the gate, and tip him.

Prefer to be met at Tangier? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price — worth it after an evening flight, when the last CTM has gone.

In the city

Start at Place Outa el Hammam, the main square: café terraces under a tree, the red kasbah walls on one side and the Grand Mosque's octagonal minaret — the only one of its shape in Morocco — on the other. Buy the kasbah ticket (60 MAD, cash) for the Andalusian garden, the small ethnographic museum and the tower climb above the blue rooftops.

Then simply wander uphill. The medina was founded in 1471 as a fortress and rebuilt by Muslim and Jewish refugees from Andalusia — the blue wash came later, deepest in the old Jewish quarter. The lanes get quieter and bluer the higher you climb.

End the day at Ras el Maa, the spring at the medina's eastern edge where the town's water pours out of the mountain past the old wash-houses, then climb beyond it to the Spanish Mosque — a 1920s hilltop mosque never used for prayer, and now the sunset viewpoint. Start up about an hour before sunset.

Book the guided days before you arrive — browse the Chefchaouen listings on GetYourGuide for the Akchour hikes, and compare Klook on a wider Morocco trip.

Give day two to Akchour and the Talassemtane National Park, and keep one slow morning for the medina alone.

After you land in Chefchaouen: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Lina Ryad & Spa.
Splurge

Lina Ryad & Spa.

Best for the medina splurge with a pool and hammam

The medina's polished address, on Avenue Hassan I in the old town: suites around an Andalusian courtyard, a heated indoor pool and hammam — rare in Chefchaouen — and a roof terrace staring at the Rif.

Dar Echchaouen.
Mid-range

Dar Echchaouen.

Best for gardens and a pool just outside the medina

A garden maison d'hôtes on the Ras El Ma road, just outside the medina's eastern edge: terraced grounds, an outdoor pool, big suites with carved wooden beds, and a ten-minute stroll back into the blue.

Casa Blue Pearl.
Budget

Casa Blue Pearl.

Best for budget rooms in the medina — two minutes from Plaza Uta el-Hammam

Bed down in the medina, two minutes from Plaza Uta el-Hammam and the Kasbah — a blue-washed guesthouse of simple rooms at a budget price. Book it for the medina version of budget Chefchaouen.

Stay inside or just below the medina — everything you came for is a stepped walk. The splurge buys you a pool and a hammam inside the blue lanes; the budget beds buy you a rooftop and the same lanes.

Book any of the three early for spring and autumn weekends. Confirm whether the quoted total includes the two tourist taxes — in Chefchaouen it usually does not.

Where to eat first

Chicken and preserved lemon tagine served in a blue ceramic dish

Eat Rif mountain food on day one. This is goat country: slow goat tagines, crumbly fresh goat cheese on every breakfast table, bissara — the fava bean soup poured with olive oil and cumin — and bread from the communal ovens. Three first stops:

Restaurant Beldi Bab Ssour.

The home-cooking benchmark at 31 Rue Benjelloun, near Bab Ssour: bissara, goat tagines and vegetable couscous at local prices, family-style if you are a group. Arrive before 13:00 or queue.

Casa Hassan.

The riad restaurant at 22 Rue Targui, a step from the square: a long-running kitchen known for its pastilla and rooftop tables. The set menu is the easy first-night order after the bus ride.

Cafe Clock.

At 3 Derb Tijani, the cross-cultural café: camel burger, vegetarian and vegan plates, cooking classes and story-telling nights. Breakfast here sets the day up properly.

For cooking classes and food tours, browse the Chefchaouen listings on GetYourGuide and book early in the stay.

Day trips and more

Three ways out of the blue: the waterfalls twice over — the long local hike and the route-choosing version — and one guided walk that explains the medina you have been photographing. Book the guided versions ahead through GetYourGuide.

When to go and what it costs

The white Spanish Mosque on its hill above Chefchaouen

Spring (March to May) is the package: mild days, green hills and Akchour at its strongest after the rains. Autumn (September to November) runs a close second. Summer is busy — day-trippers flood the lanes by mid-morning — but the altitude keeps it cooler than Fes or Marrakech, and overnight guests get the medina back at dusk. Winter nights are properly cold at 600 metres, and rain can close the Akchour trails. Whenever you come, the lanes are yours before 10:00 and after 17:00.

Chefchaouen is one of Morocco's gentle budgets. A backpacker in a simple guesthouse, on Bab Ssour lunches and the CTM bus: about 350 to 500 MAD a day. Mid-range — a riad with a pool, rooftop dinners, a guided Akchour day: about 900 to 1,400 MAD a day. A splurge day at the spa riad with a private transfer passes 2,500 MAD.

Cash is the budget skill here: the kasbah, buses, grand taxis and most medina restaurants are cash-only, and the square's ATMs run dry on busy weekends — draw money in Tangier.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for a mountain town of steps — sun at noon, a cold edge by evening, and lanes that turn slick after rain. This is the full list:

Add the Chefchaouen extras: shoes with real grip for the blue steps and the Akchour gorge, a warm layer for winter evenings and the Spanish Mosque at sunset, and a swimsuit from April on — the Akchour pools earn it.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

A blue arched doorway in a whitewashed Chefchaouen medina lane

Darija first, Spanish a close second — Chefchaouen sat in Spain's protectorate, and many older residents speak Spanish more readily than French. Lead with salam or buenos días, and ask before photographing anyone: some residents decline, and a few famous doorways charge a small fee for posed photos. Haggling in the souks stays gentle here — the Ensemble Artisanal near the kasbah sells at fixed prices if you want a benchmark first.

Four phrases do most of the work:

SalamhelloShukranthank youBshhal?how much?La, shukranno, thank you

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Morocco is not in Schengen: most visitors from the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia get 90 days visa-free on arrival, with nothing to buy in advance. Your passport is stamped at Tangier — check the entry stamp is there before you leave the desk, as travellers without one have had trouble leaving Morocco.

Police checkpoints on the Rif routes are routine, and riads register guests with the police as a matter of course. To stay beyond 90 days, apply for an extension at a police station well before the days run out.

Safety and health

Hash offers are the local nuisance, and the law is not a game

The Rif is Morocco's historic kif-growing region, so offers come steadily in the lanes and around the bus station. Possession is illegal and penalties are severe — decline with a firm la, shukran, keep walking, and never accept an invitation to visit a farm.

The medina itself is calm, and its hazards are physical

Steep blue steps turn slippery when wet, and lanes are unlit in patches after dark — take your phone light for the walk back from dinner, and watch your footing on the Ras el Maa path after rain.

Agree every price before the service starts

Petit and grand taxi fares, porter help, photo fees at painted doorways and "free" guidance from unofficial guides at the bus station all end better when the dirhams are settled first. Official guides carry a badge; your riad can book one.

Akchour is a mountain river, not a water park

Trails are rocky, crossings are slippery, and the water runs cold even in August. Wear shoes you can get wet, start before the midday heat, turn back if rain threatens upstream, and swim only in the calm pools.

Frequently asked questions

The things travellers ask before the blue city: the airport that is in another city, the two small taxes and the 90 visa-free days.

Transfers checked against CTM, Supratours, 12go and Rome2Rio route data, October 2026; entry rules against UK Foreign Office and Moroccan consular guidance; taxes against the Moroccan taxe de séjour and tourism promotion tax bands.

Taxi from Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport to the Tangier CTM station, then the CTM coach: about 85 MAD and about 2 hours 30 minutes via Tetouan. Coaches are few each day — book ahead at ctm.ma. A private transfer runs about 600 to 1,000 MAD per car, door to door.

No — and no train station either. The nearest airport is Tetouan Sania Ramel (TTU), about 60 km away with a small route map; Tangier (TNG), about 110 km away, is the main gateway. Every arrival finishes with the Rif road by bus, grand taxi or transfer.

Most US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian visitors get 90 days visa-free on arrival, with nothing to apply for in advance. Check the entry stamp goes into your passport at Tangier — travellers without one have had trouble leaving Morocco.

Two small taxes combine, per person per night: the taxe de séjour (about 2 to 30 MAD by property class) and the tourism promotion tax (about 1 to 15 MAD). Most Chefchaouen riads land between about 10 and 40 MAD all-in. Under-12s are exempt, and it is usually paid in cash at the property, on top of the room rate.

March to May and September to November: warm days, clear light, and Akchour flowing in spring. Summer is busy with day-trippers but cooler than the Moroccan plains at 600 metres; winter nights are cold and rain can close the gorge trails.

The medina is calm and heavily walked, and serious crime against visitors is rare. The steady nuisance is hashish offers — the Rif is a growing region, but possession is illegal with severe penalties. A firm no and walking on ends it; agree taxi and porter prices in advance.

Fares change — the CTM and Supratours pages always win.
