You have just landed at Hurghada International, just south of a resort strip that runs for kilometres — Sakala and its marina about 20 minutes north, Al Mamsha closer, and Makadi Bay and El Gouna a half-hour or more away. The base you booked decides your first ride, so this guide starts there.

You just landed in Hurghada. HRG sits just south of the strip — Sakala is about 20 minutes, the outlying bays far longer — with an Airalo eSIM live for the app rides that end taxi haggling, a US$30 visa to sort before passport control, and the reef days that sell out first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.
Quick facts
Airport
Hurghada International (HRG), just south of the resort strip Sakala, the town centre, is about 10 km north — 15 to 20 minutes by road. Al Mamsha is closer; Makadi Bay and El Gouna are 30 to 40 minutes in opposite directions.
Getting in
App ride about EGP 120 to 250, pre-booked transfer from about US$15, taxi fare agreed before you ride There is no airport bus worth a first-timer's time. Your base decides the fare and the drive.
Currency
Egyptian pound (EGP), about EGP 55 to US$1 in October 2026 Resorts and larger restaurants take cards; taxis, markets, tips and street food run on cash. Carry small notes — drivers rarely have change for large ones.
Languages
Arabic (Egyptian dialect), with English widely spoken in the resort zones German and Russian are also common — charter flights bring much of Europe here. A few Arabic phrases earn smiles everywhere.
Time zone
Egypt Time UTC+3 with daylight saving until 30 October 2026, then UTC+2 — Egypt still changes its clocks in 2026: summer time ends on the last Friday of October, so late-October arrivals should double-check flight and pickup times.
Emergency
122 police, 123 ambulance, 180 fire, 126 tourist police Save the tourist police number as well as your hotel's — resorts have house doctors, and Hurghada's private hospitals handle most visitor care.
Plugs
Type C and Type F sockets, 220 volts Two round pins, the European pattern. British and North American plugs need an adapter; most phone chargers handle the voltage.
Tap water
Do not drink it bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth — Hotels leave bottled water in rooms and refill at breakfast. Ice in resort restaurants is made from treated water; skip ice at street stalls.
Tourist tax
No separate per-night city tax hotel bills carry 14% VAT, a 12% service charge and 1% city tax — Resort rates often quote the stack as included; check the total before you pay, because a low headline rate can grow by about a quarter at checkout.
Best months
October to April warm sea, days in the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius — March to May and October to November balance heat and crowds best. June to August passes 35°C, and December to February is peak European charter season.
Map
Find your arrival stop, hotel, and first meal. Stays, sights, and landmarks in Hurghada — live hotel prices plus the key places from this guide.
Touch down at HRG and treat the first hour as logistics: Hurghada is a long coastal strip, and your hotel could be five minutes away in Al Mamsha or forty in Makadi Bay or El Gouna.
Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer Egypt trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
The arrival checklist, in order:
Buy your visa sticker at the bank kiosk in arrivals before passport control, unless you already hold an eVisa
Confirm your hotel's strip — Sakala, Al Mamsha, El Dahar or an outlying bay — before choosing a ride
Ride an app car or a pre-booked transfer, or agree the full taxi fare before the car moves
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
App ride (inDrive, Uber or Careem)
inDrive lets you propose the fare and Uber and Careem price it in the app before you ride; meet at the pickup point outside the terminal and check the plate — the no-haggle default when you have data
PriceEGP 120 to 250 (about US$2 to 5)Journeyabout 20 min
Pre-booked private transfer
The fixed-price option booked before you fly: the driver waits in arrivals with a name board, and the price covers the car to Sakala or Al Mamsha — Makadi Bay and El Gouna transfers cost more
Pricefrom about US$15Journeyabout 20 min
Airport taxi
The rank sits outside arrivals; meters are rarely used, so agree the full fare for the whole party before the car moves — drivers touting inside the hall quote the highest prices
Priceagree EGP 150 to 250 (about US$3 to 5)Journeyabout 20 min
Hotel shuttle or shared transfer
Many resort packages include the transfer — check before you book anything else; shared coaches wait for other flights and drop along the strip, so they run slower than a car

HRG sits just south of the strip, so the run is short — but there is no single centre. Every fare below is to Sakala; Al Mamsha costs less, Makadi Bay and El Gouna more. The rides in:
Choose the app ride when you have data: the price is set in the app and nobody haggles. Choose a taxi only with the full fare agreed first — meters are rarely used, and arrivals-hall touts quote the highest prices in town.
Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first — a car rarely earns its keep here, where app rides cover the strip cheaply.
In town, you walk inside one district and ride between them: the strip runs for kilometres and pavements come and go. White microbuses run set routes along the main roads for a few pounds — flag one down if you are feeling adventurous.
In the city
Start at the Marina in Sakala at sunset, when the yachts light up, cafés fill and the white El Mina Mosque glows across the harbour. The fish market sits next door — go in the morning, when the Red Sea catch lands and the prices are chalked up by the kilo.
Walk north into El Dahar, the old town: local markets, coffee houses, street food and the Coptic Cathedral of Saint Shenouda. It is the cheapest, most Egyptian part of the city, and the antidote to an all-inclusive buffet.
Give an hour to the Hurghada Museum on Al Mamsha, a compact pharaonic and Coptic collection that orients you before a Luxor day. Then do what the city is for: a house-reef snorkel off your hotel beach, where turtles work the seagrass on calm mornings.
Browse GetYourGuide for boat days and desert safaris, and compare Klook when stacking activities.
After you land in Hurghada: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Steigenberger ALDAU Beach Hotel.
Best for the all-inclusive splurge on Al Mamsha — private beach, lazy-river pools, golf and a spa
Sleep on Yussif Afifi Road in Al Mamsha — a five-star all-inclusive with a private sandy beach, lazy-river pools, a golf course, a spa and a dive centre. Book it for the fullest version of the resort strip, about 20 minutes from the airport.
Best for a full-service Al Mamsha base — private beach, two pools and Sakala within reach
Stay in Al Mamsha El Seyahi — 282 rooms around two pools and a children's pool, a private beach with snorkelling and diving, three restaurants and a beach bar. Book it for a full-service base that still sits within reach of Sakala and the marina.
Best for social budget beds in Sakala — dorms and privates on Sheraton Street, breakfast included
Bed down above Platinum Gym on Sheraton Street in Sakala, opposite the Seagull Resort — dorms and privates, breakfast included, sea-view rooms and the marina a 15-minute walk away. Book it for the social, walkable version of budget Hurghada.
Choose your strip before your hotel — the strip is the decision. Sakala is the walkable centre: marina, fish restaurants and Sheraton Road on foot. Al Mamsha, the promenade strip south, holds the big resorts. El Dahar is local and cheapest. Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna are separate resort towns, 30 to 40 minutes away — book them on purpose, not by accident.
Book ahead for December to February and school holidays, when European charters fill the strip. Before you pay, confirm the quoted total includes the 14% VAT, 12% service charge and 1% city tax.
Where to eat first
Eat fish on day one — the Red Sea is the larder. The classic order is grilled whole fish with sayadiyah, the spiced fisherman's rice, tahini and salads. Three first stops:
El Halaka Fish Restaurant, by the fish market in Sakala.
Choose your fish from the ice display beside El Mina Mosque — and confirm the per-kilo price before they cook it, because fish here sells by weight and unwary bills grow fast. Noon to midnight, cash ready.
Starfish Restaurant, Sheraton Road, Sakala.
Eat at the polished, tourist-friendly seafood house running since 2005 — grilled fish, calamari, prawns and seafood platters, with the bill itemised and no surprises. The safer first-night splurge.
El Dahar street food, the old town.
Graze ful and taameya, koshari and grilled meats where locals eat — the cheapest dinner in Hurghada and the best people-watching. Go early evening, carry small notes.
For food tours and cooking classes, browse the Hurghada listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.
Day trips and more
Three escapes cover what Hurghada does best: an island boat day, the long run to Luxor, and the desert behind the strip. Carry reef shoes and water — two end in the sea, one in dust.
Orange Bay Island
Seven to eight hours by boat from the marina: two snorkelling stops on Giftun Island reefs, then two hours on Orange Bay's pale sand and swings in the shallows, with lunch and drinks on board. Hotel pickup included, from about US$29. Check availability →
Luxor
Fourteen hours, small group, early start: Karnak's hypostyle hall, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings, with Tutankhamun's tomb on the booked option. Entry fees covered, from about US$95. Check availability →
Desert quad bike safari
Three to five hours inland: a guided quad ride to a Bedouin village, Bedouin tea and bread baking, a camel ride, and an optional BBQ dinner with shows under the stars on the longer option. Hotel pickup included, from about US$25. Check availability →
Leave a spare morning for El Gouna, the lagoon town 40 minutes north, or a second boat to Mahmya Island, the quieter Giftun beach.
When to go and what it costs
October to April is the season: the sea stays swimmable all winter, days run from the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius, and reef visibility peaks. December to February peaks with European charters — prices climb with them. June to August is properly hot, often over 35°C, but the breeze works and rates fall.
The pound stood at about EGP 55 to US$1 in October 2026 and moves, so treat conversions as a snapshot. An app ride across town is a few dollars; a marina fish dinner EGP 400 to 1,400 a person; a boat day US$25 to 60.
A backpacker in a hostel dorm, on El Dahar street food and microbuses: US$30 to 50 a day. Mid-range — a resort room, seafood dinners, one boat day: US$90 to 150 a day. A splurge day in an all-inclusive suite passes US$300.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for strong sun, warm sea and air-conditioned everything — the gap between beach and lobby is twenty degrees. This is the full list:
Add the Hurghada extras: reef shoes for shelly sand and coral entries, your own snorkel mask if you have one, a Type C and F adapter, and a light cover-up for mosque visits. The rain jacket earns its place mainly on the plane.
Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly
Arabic runs the city, in its Egyptian dialect — warm, funny and fast. Resort staff work in English, German and Russian, but a greeting in Arabic changes any negotiation, and haggling here is a conversation, not a fight.
Four phrases do most of the work:
AhlanhelloShukranthank youBikam?how much?La, shukranno, thank you
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US, British, EU, Canadian and Australian citizens need a visa: either an eVisa from the official portal (visa2egypt.gov.eg), applied for at least a week ahead, or a visa on arrival — buy the sticker at the bank kiosk before passport control. The single-entry fee rose to US$30 on 1 March 2026 (multiple-entry US$65), for up to 30 days, and your passport needs six months' validity.
Say this plainly: the free Sinai resorts stamp does not cover Hurghada. That 15-day exemption is for direct arrivals at Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba only — Hurghada is on the African mainland, and arriving here without a visa is not an option.
Safety and health
Agree every fare before the car moves
Unagreed taxi fares are the first-timer tax: settle the full price before you get in, or let an app price the ride. The same rule covers camel photos and souvenirs — a price agreed after is a price invented.
Decline the free gift
Anyone offering a free trip, free perfume or a free excursion for "just 90 minutes" is selling timeshares or a hard-sell tour. A smile, a firm "la, shukran" and walking on ends it — never hand over your passport or hotel voucher.
Respect the sea, not just the sun
Snorkel inside the marked zones, never touch coral, and keep clear of boat lanes off the hotel beaches. Marine park rules protect the reef that is the whole point of Hurghada — sunscreen before the boat, not after.
Drink bottled water and pace the heat
Tap water is for washing, not drinking. Carry water on desert and Luxor days, start early, and treat dizziness seriously. For anything urgent, dial 123 for an ambulance or 126 for the tourist police, and keep your insurer's number on your phone.
App rides price it in advance: inDrive, Uber and Careem run EGP 120 to 250 to Sakala, about 20 minutes. A pre-booked transfer starts at about US$15; a rank taxi costs EGP 150 to 250 with the fare agreed before you ride. Makadi Bay and El Gouna take 30 to 40 minutes and cost more.
Yes — Hurghada is on the African mainland, so the free Sinai resorts stamp does not apply. US, British, EU, Canadian and Australian citizens use an eVisa from the official portal, applied for at least a week ahead, or a visa on arrival at the bank kiosk before passport control: US$30 single-entry since 1 March 2026, for up to 30 days.
Sakala for a walkable first stay — marina, fish restaurants and Sheraton Road on foot. Al Mamsha for the big beach resorts. El Dahar, the old town, is cheapest and most local. Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna are separate resort towns 30 to 40 minutes away.
No separate per-night city tax. Hotel bills carry 14% VAT, a 12% service charge and 1% city tax; rates often quote that stack as included, but a low headline rate can grow by about a quarter at checkout. Confirm the total before you pay.
October to April: warm sea, days from the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius, and the best reef visibility. December to February is peak European charter season. June to August passes 35°C but brings lower rates and bath-warm water.
With the resort-strip basics, yes. Agree every taxi fare before the car moves or let an app price it, decline the free-gift timeshare invitations, and keep small notes for tips and markets. The tourist police are on 126; ambulance is 123.
Pound figures move — your ride app and the official eVisa portal always win.
