You have just landed at Monterey Regional, a one-terminal airport about 3 miles from a town with two hearts: working-waterfront Old Monterey and Steinbeck's Cannery Row, on the south shore of a protected marine sanctuary. This guide covers the 10-minute ride in, where to sleep from a waterfront spa hotel to a nonprofit hostel, the aquarium's date-specific tickets, the first chowder, and the whale, e-bike and kayak days that fill day two.

You just landed in Monterey. The airport sits about 3 miles from downtown — 10 minutes by taxi or rideshare, $2 by MST bus — with an Airalo eSIM live for maps, aquarium tickets booked date-specific on the official site, and the whale boats and 17-Mile Drive days that sell out first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.
Quick facts
Airport
Monterey Regional (MRY), about 3 miles southeast of downtown A small single-terminal airport with nonstops to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, San Diego, Seattle and Las Vegas. San Jose and San Francisco are the bigger alternatives.
Getting in
MST Line 7 bus $2, taxi or rideshare about $20, 10 to 20 minutes The Line 7 bus runs from the airport stop on Olmsted Road to the Monterey Transit Plaza downtown, but it is infrequent. Taxis wait outside baggage claim; Uber and Lyft pick up at the kerb.
Currency
The US dollar (USD) cards rule, carry a little cash — Cards are accepted virtually everywhere. Keep small bills for market stalls and tips.
Languages
English; Spanish is widely spoken across Monterey County You will hear it in hotels, kitchens and shops — the phrase chips below cover the courtesies.
Time zone
Pacific Time PDT (UTC-7) in October, PST (UTC-8) from 1 November 2026 — Daylight saving ends on Sunday 1 November 2026, when clocks fall back one hour.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in the US Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula is the main local hospital, inland from downtown.
Plugs
Type A and B sockets, 120 volts the US standard — Europeans and Britons need a plug adapter; most chargers handle the voltage.
Tap water
Safe to drink Monterey's supply is treated and locals drink it — Refill at the hotel before coast days; trailhead fountains are scarce.
Tourist tax
The City of Monterey charges 12% transient occupancy tax on rooms The rate has been 12% since January 2021 and is added to your folio. Unincorporated Monterey County — Big Sur, for example — charges 10.5%. Some properties add small per-night district assessments, so check the confirmation total.
Best months
September and October for clear skies; December to March for gray whales Summer brings the marine layer — fog that can sit on the bay all day. Autumn is the clear season locals wait for.

Touch down at Monterey Regional and the trip is already easy: one small terminal, bags in minutes, downtown about 10 minutes by road. The one decision in arrivals is your base — downtown and Old Monterey, or Cannery Row and the waterfront.
Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from arrivals. For a longer US trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
The arrival checklist, in order:
Book Monterey Bay Aquarium tickets on the official site before you arrive — admission is date-specific and there are no third-party sellers
Ride a taxi or rideshare in, unless a Line 7 bus meets your flight
Walk your base once you have dropped your bags: the wharf and Cannery Row from the waterfront, Alvarado Street from downtown
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
MST Line 7 bus
MST Line 7 from the airport stop on Olmsted Road to the Monterey Transit Plaza; $2 covers two hours including transfers and fares cap at $6 a day when you tap the same contactless card; departures are widely spaced, so check the MST timetable first
Price$2Journeyabout 20 min
Taxi
The rank sits outside baggage claim; taxis are metered and an airport surcharge is added to the fare — confirm the meter is running before you set off
Priceabout $20Journeyabout 10 min
Rideshare (Uber and Lyft)
Uber's own Monterey Regional page averages $20 and 10 minutes for the run to town; meet your car at the app pick-up kerb outside arrivals and check the plate
Priceabout $20Journeyabout 10 min
Rental car
Desks for the major brands sit inside the terminal; a car earns its keep for Big Sur, Carmel and Point Lobos days, while downtown and Cannery Row are walkable and parking is metered or garaged
Pricefrom about $40 a dayJourneyabout 10 min
Monterey is two walkable halves — downtown and the waterfront — stitched together by the Coastal Recreation Trail and MST buses. The airport run is short by any measure:
Choose the taxi or rideshare unless a Line 7 bus lines up with your flight — at $2 for two hours including transfers it is the bargain, but departures are widely spaced. A rental car earns its keep only when Big Sur, Carmel or Point Lobos are on the plan; the rest of the time it is a parking cost.
In town, MST buses cost $2 a ride with two hours of transfers, tapped contactless, and fares cap at $6 a day. The Coastal Trail is the local favourite: about 2 miles of car-free path from the wharf past Cannery Row to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove.
In the city
Start at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, at 886 Cannery Row. The three-storey Kelp Forest, the Open Sea gallery and the sea otter feedings justify the $65 adult ticket — buy it date-specific on the aquarium's own site, allow three to four hours, and go early or late for thinner crowds.
Walk Cannery Row itself next, the sardine-canning street John Steinbeck made famous in 1945. The canneries are now tasting rooms, shops and hotels, but the workers' cottages and Ed Ricketts's marine lab site still line the street.
Eat your way along Old Fisherman's Wharf, the working pier east of downtown: chowder samples at the doorways, sea lions under the pilings, whale boats loading at the end. Then turn inland to downtown — Alvarado Street's bars and cafés, and the Path of History's adobes, among them Colton Hall, where California's constitution was drafted.
Finish on the Coastal Trail at golden hour, walking west from Cannery Row to Lovers Point — otters in the kelp, seals on the rocks, the bay turning gold. Browse GetYourGuide for the boat and bike days below, and compare Klook.
After you land in Monterey: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.
Best for the waterfront splurge — rooms over the bay, a rooftop spa and the aquarium three blocks away
Sleep over the water at 400 Cannery Row — rooms above the bay, the rooftop Vista Blue Spa, Schooners restaurant, and the aquarium three blocks west. Book it for the fullest version of the Cannery Row splurge, otters included.
Best for a full-service downtown base beside the Conference Center, minutes from the wharf
Stay at Two Portola Plaza downtown — 379 rooms beside the Conference Center, Jacks Monterey and the Peter B's brewpub on site, the wharf minutes on foot, Cannery Row a mile west. Book it for a full-service base serving both halves of town.
Best for budget beds three blocks from the aquarium — nonprofit dorms and privates, renovated in 2024
Bed down at 778 Hawthorne Street in the Lighthouse District — a nonprofit hostel reopened in March 2024 after a full renovation, three blocks from the aquarium, with dorms and private rooms, ensuite bathrooms and a communal kitchen. Dorm guests must arrive before the 10 pm quiet hours. Book it for the social, affordable Monterey.
Choose the half before the hotel. Downtown and Old Monterey suit a first night: the Transit Plaza, Alvarado Street dining and the wharf on foot, at calmer rates. Cannery Row and New Monterey put the aquarium and the bay at your door and charge for it.
Book ahead for summer, race weekends at Laguna Seca and holidays. Check the folio total before you confirm — the 12% lodging tax, and sometimes small district assessments, sit on top of the quoted rate.
Where to eat first
Eat seafood first — this is a fishing port before it is anything else. The first-day order is clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, then whatever the boats brought in: sanddabs, bay squid, Dungeness crab in season. Three first stops:
Old Fishermans Grotto, Old Fisherman's Wharf.
Eat the wharf's benchmark chowder where the Trapani family has served it for generations — creamy New England style in a bread bowl, above the sea lions. The tourist order, and still the right one.
Schooners Coastal Kitchen and Bar, 400 Cannery Row.
Dine at the Monterey Plaza's waterline restaurant for the sustainable-seafood version — local catch, bay views, a deck for sunset. Book the sunset slot a day ahead in season.
Alvarado Street Brewery, 426 Alvarado Street, downtown.
Drink the local pour where Monterey goes out — house beers and wood-fired pizzas on the main downtown street. It fills by seven; go early or expect a wait.

Day trips and more
Three escapes cover the bay three ways: out on the water with the whales, along the famous shore road by e-bike, and down in the kelp forest by kayak.
Whale watching with a marine guide
Sail from Old Fisherman's Wharf aboard the Princess Monterey or the Atlantis Monterey, a marine specialist narrating, heated cabins and a walk-around deck. Humpbacks and blue whales feed here in summer and autumn; gray whales pass in winter. Rated 4.6 from 518 reviews, from $70. Check availability →
17-Mile Drive by guided e-bike
Three hours on e-bikes through the Del Monte Forest: Spanish Bay, China Rock, Bird Rock's sea lions and the Lone Cypress, with a coffee stop at the Pebble Beach Lodge. Rated 4.9 from 160 reviews, from $79. Check availability →
Cannery Row kayak tour
Two hours in a small group of ten at most, launching into the kelp beds off Cannery Row with a guide: the aquarium and Coast Guard Pier from the water, otters, seals and sea lions at paddle height. Rated 4.8 from 88 reviews, from $65. Check availability →
Leave a spare day for the self-drive south: Point Lobos at $10 a vehicle, then Highway 1 to Bixby Bridge and Big Sur — check the road first (see Safety and health).
When to go and what it costs
September and October are the secret season: the fog pulls back, the bay runs warm by Monterey standards — the coast averages about 57°F all year — and crowds thin. April and May bring wildflowers on the headlands.
June to August is peak price and peak fog: the marine layer can erase the view for days, and locals pack a jacket to every July dinner. December to March is gray-whale and storm season at once — the cheapest rooms, the roughest seas.
The fixed costs: the aquarium at $65 an adult, a whale boat from $70, state park day use at $10 a vehicle. A backpacker in a dorm, on buses and market lunches: about $100 to 140 a day. Mid-range — a downtown room, seafood dinners, one boat day: about $300 to 420 a day. A Cannery Row splurge day with the spa passes $600 without trying.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for a cold-water coast, not a beach postcard — Monterey evenings ask for a layer in every month. This is the full list:
Add the Monterey extras: a warm fleece — the famous summer fog is a cold fog — binoculars for whales and otters from shore, and a waterproof phone pouch for kayak and whale-boat days.
Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly
English runs Monterey; Spanish is the county's other working language, spoken across its hotels, kitchens and farms, and a Spanish greeting is good manners here.
Four phrases do most of the work:
Buenos díasgood morningGraciasthank youPor favorplease¿Cuánto cuesta?how much does it cost?
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens need only a REAL ID-compliant licence or a passport for the domestic flight. Most international visitors — Britons, EU nationals, Australians, Japanese — enter on the Visa Waiver Program with an ESTA: apply on the official CBP site at least 72 hours ahead; it costs $40.62 and lasts two years. Everyone else needs a visa arranged well ahead.
There is no ticket into Monterey itself. State parks charge $10 per vehicle per day; 17-Mile Drive charges a per-vehicle gate fee.
Safety and health
Respect the cold water and the sneaker waves
The bay stays near 55°F all year and open-coast beaches run real rip currents and surprise swells. Swim at guarded beaches such as Lovers Point, wear the wetsuit the kayak operators give you, and never turn your back on the surf.
Check Highway 1 before every coast drive
The road south closes for slides in winter and repairs in between, and fog can cut visibility to metres on summer mornings. Check Caltrans QuickMap that morning, obey closure gates, and do not learn the coast road in the dark.
Give the wildlife its distance
Otters, seals and sea lions are protected under federal law. Watch from trail and deck, never feed or approach hauled-out animals, and keep drones grounded — they are banned over the sanctuary's waters.
Use ordinary city care, and guard the car
Monterey is a calm small city, but cars at trailheads, wharf lots and beach access points are the known target for smash-and-grab theft. Leave nothing visible in a parked car, and dial 911 for anything serious.
The arrival, the aquarium tickets and the taxes, in short.
Transfers and fares checked against Monterey Regional Airport, Uber's MRY page and mst.org, October 2026; lodging tax against the City of Monterey's published 12% hotel tax rate and Monterey County's 10.5% unincorporated rate; aquarium prices against montereybayaquarium.org, October 2026.
About 10 minutes by road. A taxi from the rank outside baggage claim or an Uber or Lyft runs about $20 to downtown or Cannery Row. The budget option is MST's Line 7 bus: $2 from the airport stop on Olmsted Road to the Monterey Transit Plaza in about 20 minutes — but departures are widely spaced, so check the timetable against your flight.
Downtown and Old Monterey for a first night: the Transit Plaza, Alvarado Street dining and the wharf on foot. Cannery Row and New Monterey put the aquarium and the bay at your door and charge for it. Pacific Grove, west along the trail, is the quiet third option.
Buy them on the aquarium's own site before you arrive. Admission is date-specific — $65 for adults (18 to 69), $50 for youth (5 to 17) and seniors (70 plus), free for ages 4 and under — and the aquarium has no third-party sellers and offers no discounts. Tickets are non-refundable but can be exchanged for another date until 4 pm Pacific on the day.
September and October: the summer fog pulls back, days run clear and warm by local standards, and crowds thin. June to August brings peak prices and the marine layer — fog that can sit on the bay all day. December to March is gray-whale and storm season, with the year's cheapest rooms.
Not for Monterey itself — downtown, the wharf, Cannery Row and Pacific Grove link up on foot, by the Coastal Trail and by MST bus at $2 a ride. A car earns its keep for the day trips: Point Lobos, Carmel and Highway 1 to Big Sur are all drives.
The City of Monterey's transient occupancy tax is 12% of the room rate — in place since January 2021, added to your folio, sometimes alongside small per-night district assessments, so judge bookings on the confirmation total. Lodging in unincorporated Monterey County, such as Big Sur, pays the county rate of 10.5% instead.
Fares change — the MST timetable, the aquarium site and your ride app always win.
