Scottsdale: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor, about 12 miles southwest of a desert city built on patios, pools and Camelback light — Old Town galleries and western storefronts, a resort corridor up Scottsdale Road, and saguaro desert at the city's edge. This guide covers the real ride in (there is no light rail to Scottsdale, and Scottsdale Airport takes no airlines), where to sleep from a Camelback resort to a Fashion Square motel, the 13.97% hotel tax stack, the first Southwestern dinner, and the canyon, red rock and balloon days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Scottsdale. Sky Harbor sits about 12 miles southwest of Old Town — the move is a taxi at about US$40 or a ride app or Waymo at about US$30, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps and ride apps, hotel tax at 13.97% plus resort fees at the big properties, no light rail into the city, and the Grand Canyon, Sedona and dawn balloon days that sell out first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), about 12 miles southwest of Old Town Scottsdale Airport (SDL) is private and charter only — Every scheduled flight lands at Sky Harbor, in Terminals 3 and 4. SDL, in north Scottsdale, handles private jets and charters — no airline will sell you a ticket there.
Getting in
Taxi about US$40, ride app or Waymo about US$30, Sky Train and bus combo US$4, 25 to 75 minutes There is no direct transit line to Scottsdale: Valley Metro light rail does not reach the city. Road rides take about 25 minutes; the budget combo takes about 75.
Currency
US dollar (USD) cards are accepted almost everywhere — Carry small bills for tips, the trolley is free, and buses take fare by card, app or exact change.
Languages
English, with Spanish widely spoken across the Valley Hotel, restaurant and tour staff work in English; a little Spanish is welcomed in the borderlands spirit of the Southwest.
Time zone
Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) all year Arizona does not observe daylight saving time — The one exception is the Navajo Nation in the state's northeast corner, which does change its clocks. Scottsdale never does, so summer here matches Pacific Time.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in the United States Keep your insurer's number on your phone — US emergency care is excellent and expensive.
Plugs
Type A and Type B sockets, 120 volts Visitors from outside North America need an adapter; most chargers handle 120 volts without a converter.
Tap water
Safe to drink Scottsdale's supply is treated Colorado River and groundwater — It tastes of the desert, and you will drink a lot of it. Refill before every hike and carry more than you think you need.
Tourist tax
Lodging carries 13.97% in taxes 7.27% state and county transient tax, plus Scottsdale's 1.70% privilege tax and 5% transient lodging tax — The stack sits on top of the quoted room rate. Resort fees, common at the big properties, are extra again and are taxed too.
Best months
October to April warm days, cool nights, patio season — June to September is extreme heat: highs run well over 40°C, and July to September adds monsoon storms. Rooms are cheapest then, for a reason.

Settle in

Touch down at Sky Harbor and Scottsdale starts 25 minutes later

One highway run northeast, past Camelback Mountain. Do not let a booking site send you to Scottsdale Airport — SDL is private and charter only; every airline flight uses PHX.

Set up data before you leave home

An Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer US trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order

Pick your ride before you land: a taxi or Waymo for the door, the Sky Train combo only with light bags

Screenshot your hotel address

Resort gates and casita layouts confuse first-night drivers

Drop your bags, hydrate

And save the big walk for the cool of the evening

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival

AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

In a hurry? Taxi is the fastest option listed, at about 25 min.

Watching the budget? Sky Train, light rail and bus is the cheapest option listed, at US$4.

Heavy bags, a group, or a late arrival? Taxi takes you door to door — about US$40, about 25 min.

Ride app or Waymo

Uber, Lyft and Waymo pick up at the airport's rideshare areas; Waymo runs driverless around the clock and holds steady prices when app fares surge — reports run US$25 to US$65, about US$30 typical to Old Town

Phoenix Sky Harbor's control tower and terminal roads at dusk

Scottsdale's one transit fact shapes everything: Valley Metro light rail stops at the Phoenix and Tempe line and never reaches the city. From PHX you ride the road — or stitch together the free Sky Train, the light rail and a bus north. The rides in from PHX:

Choose a taxi or ride app with luggage or a late landing — Waymo serves PHX around the clock at steady prices. The transit combo is honest budget travel, not a luggage route: two changes and a walk at the far end.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep for Taliesin West, the Preserve and day trips, not inside Old Town.

In town, Old Town is compact and walkable. The Scottsdale Trolley runs three fare-free routes every 20 minutes on weekdays. Valley Metro buses cost US$2 a ride, and ride apps and Waymo fill every gap.

In the city

Start in Old Town, around Scottsdale Road and Main Street: western storefronts, Arts District galleries, and the Little Red Schoolhouse of 1909, now the historical museum. Thursday evenings bring the ArtWalk, when galleries stay open late.

Step into Western Spirit, Scottsdale's Museum of the West, then cross to the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Center for the Performing Arts on the Civic Center lawns. Stroll the Arizona Canal at the Waterfront at golden hour, when Camelback turns pink.

Hike Camelback Mountain early, or not at all.

Climb Echo Canyon or Cholla at dawn with a litre of water per person — the city's signature summit, and the one that rescues unprepared hikers every summer. Obey trail closures on extreme-heat days.

Tour Taliesin West in the foothills.

Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school in north Scottsdale is desert architecture at its source — book the guided tour ahead, it sells out in season.

Walk the Gateway in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Saguaros, bajadas and easy loop trails at the city's wild edge — go at first light and let the desert do the talking.

Browse GetYourGuide for desert days and city tours, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

When to go and what it costs

A saguaro silhouetted against a Sonoran Desert sunset

October to April is the season the city is built for: days in the 20s Celsius, cool nights, and the event calendar stacked — Barrett-Jackson and the Phoenix Open in January and February, spring training through March. June to September is the honest warning on this page: highs well over 40°C, monsoon storms from July, and outdoor plans shrunk to dawn and dusk. Rates fall just as fast.

Money is simple: dollars, cards everywhere, and the 13.97% lodging tax on every room rate. A bus ride is US$2; dinner at The Mission US$40 to 70 a person before tax and tip.

A budget day at the motel, on buses and taco lunches: US$110 to 140. Mid-range — the Valley Ho, a guided day out, a good dinner: US$280 to 380. A splurge day at a Camelback resort passes US$700 in season.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for fierce sun and cool desert nights: the list below is the whole game, plus a layer for after dark. This is the full list:

Add the Scottsdale extras: a wide-brim hat, a warm layer for winter evenings and dawn balloon flights, and shoes with grip for Camelback's granite.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

Western storefronts along a street in Old Town Scottsdale

English runs Scottsdale, with Spanish close behind — the Valley sits 120 miles from the Mexican border, and its food and place names say so. Four phrases do most of the work:

Good morningthe Old Town greetingThank you kindlya warm, local thank-youStay hydratedsaid like people mean it¿La cuenta, por favor?the bill, please, in Spanish

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens need nothing but ID. Visa Waiver visitors — the UK, most of the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and others — enter for up to 90 days with an ESTA, which costs US$40.62 since 16 Oct 2026; apply only through the official CBP site, at least 72 hours ahead. Everyone else needs a B1/B2 visitor visa.

At Sky Harbor, CBP officers stamp you in — six months on a visa, 90 days on the waiver — and may ask where you are staying and when you leave. Keep your hotel address and onward ticket on your phone; an ESTA is an authorization to travel, not a guarantee of entry.

Safety and health

Respect the heat — it is the main risk here

Summer highs pass 40°C and trail rescues are a weekly news item. Hike at dawn, carry a litre of water per person per hour, and never hike Camelback in afternoon heat. Trails close on extreme-heat days.

Use the car services after dark

Old Town's entertainment district pours out late and busy; walk the lit main streets, keep valuables out of sight, and take a taxi, ride app or Waymo for the last stretch rather than walking dark residential streets.

Watch for wildlife on desert trails

Rattlesnakes, scorpions and javelinas share the Preserve and the resort edges. Stay on trail, watch where hands and feet go, shake out shoes left outside, and give every animal the right of way.

Plan for sun and storms together

UV is fierce all year — sunscreen, hat and shade breaks are not optional. In monsoon season, never enter a flooded road or wash: desert water rises in minutes. For anything serious, dial 911.
