Winnipeg: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Richardson International, 8 km west of a downtown built where two prairie rivers meet — Manitoba's capital, pairing a national human-rights museum and a 6,000-year-old gathering place with the coldest big-city winter in the country. This guide covers the new-numbered bus ride in, where to sleep, the three-part tax stack, the first market lunch, and the river days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Winnipeg. The airport sits about 8 km west of downtown — the move is a D12, D13 or 224 bus at CA$3.45 (CA$3.10 on peggo) or a metered taxi at about CA$22, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps, an 18% tax stack waiting on the room, and the Forks days that fill first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Winnipeg Richardson International (YWG), about 8 km west of downtown at 2000 Wellington Avenue One terminal for all of Manitoba: flights across Canada, to US hubs and northern communities.
Getting in
Winnipeg Transit buses D12, D13 and 224 for CA$3.45 cash or CA$3.10 on peggo; taxi metered, about CA$22, 15 to 20 minutes There is no flat taxi rate — the meter rules. Buses run from the median outside Arrivals near Door 3, roughly 5:24 am to 1:17 am.
Currency
Canadian dollar (CAD), about CA$1.37 to US$1 in October 2026 Cards and tap work almost everywhere, buses included via peggo. Some shops take US dollars at their own poor rate — pay in Canadian dollars.
Languages
English first, French in St Boniface, and deep Indigenous and Métis roots Winnipeg sits on Treaty 1 territory. French leads across the river in St Boniface.
Time zone
Central Time daylight time (UTC-5) until 1 November 2026, then standard time (UTC-6) — Manitoba changes clocks with the rest of Central North America, so Winnipeg always matches Minneapolis and Chicago.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in Canada Winnipeg police non-emergency is 204-986-6222. Keep your insurer's number on your phone — visitors are billed for care.
Plugs
Type A and Type B sockets, 120 volts the same as the United States — US plugs fit directly. British and European plugs need an adapter; most phone and laptop chargers handle the voltage.
Tap water
Safe to drink Winnipeg's treated supply comes from Shoal Lake and is tested constantly — Refill freely at the hotel. Locals drink from the tap without a thought, in January as in July.
Tourist tax
5% GST plus 7% Manitoba retail sales tax plus the city's 6% accommodation tax about 18% on the room — The city levy rose from 5% to 6% on 1 April 2024 (By-law 70/2008), on stays under 30 nights.
Best months
May to September long light, patios and festival season; February for the winter counterpoint — January's daily mean is −16.3°C and daytime highs average −11.4°C, with wind chills far lower. Summer highs sit near 26°C.

Settle in

Touch down at YWG and the first hour is short: one terminal, the city 8 km east, and the Forks, Exchange District and St Boniface inside a compact, walkable core.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps work from arrivals. For a longer Canada trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

Times are airport to city centre.

Winnipeg Transit bus (D12, D13, 224)

Routes D12, D13 and 224 from the median outside Arrivals near Door 3, about 5:24 am to 1:17 am; CA$3.10 on a peggo card (the card itself is CA$5); 90-minute transfers in any direction; children 11 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult

CA$3.45about 40 min

Taxi (Unicity)

Unicity taxis wait at the rank outside Arrivals near Door 3, metered under the city's maximum fare schedule — there is no flat downtown rate, so the meter rules; about 15 to 20 minutes by road

about CA$22about 20 min

Rideshare (Uber and Lyft)

Uber and Lyft are the two rideshare companies licensed at YWG, picking up outside Door 1 on Arrivals Level 1; the price is quoted in the app before you ride and swings with demand

about CA$20about 20 min

Rental car

Counters for the major brands sit in the terminal; a car earns its keep for the Winnipeg River, Narcisse and lake days, not downtown — and winter rentals need winter driving, not optimism

from CA$45 a dayabout 15 min

The arrivals entrance and glass walkway at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport

Winnipeg rebuilt its bus network on 29 June 2025 — almost every route was renumbered, so any guide still sending you to routes 15 and 20 is out of date. The airport buses are now the D12, D13 and 224. The rides in from YWG:

Choose the bus by day with manageable bags; a taxi or rideshare late at night or in deep winter. Taxis are metered — there is no flat downtown rate, whatever an old blog says.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving, price the pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep for the river days below, not downtown.

In the city

Start at the Forks, where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet.

People have gathered here for some 6,000 years — Indigenous trade ground, fur-trade post, rail yard, and now the city's front room: the market food hall, the riverwalk, and in winter a long naturally frozen skating trail.

Walk up to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

The glass tower beside the Forks is Canada's national human-rights museum — a climb from darkness to light, ending in the Tower of Hope lookout. Give it half a day, not an hour.

Cross the Esplanade Riel into St Boniface.

The footbridge lands you in the French quarter: Provencher Boulevard cafés, St Boniface Cathedral, and the museum in the Grey Nuns' convent, the oldest building in Western Canada.

Finish in the Exchange District.

Twenty blocks of 1900s warehouses and terra-cotta facades — a national historic site, film set and gallery quarter around Old Market Square. Browse GetYourGuide for the tours below, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Book ahead for the Fringe in July, Folklorama in August and Festival du Voyageur in February. Expect the 18% tax stack on top of quoted room rates.

Where to eat first

The entrance to The Forks Market, the food hall inside the old stable building at the Forks

Eat what Winnipeg eats: perogies and pickerel, bannock, and the world's cuisines in one hall — a city built by immigration, eating like it. Three first stops:

The Forks Market food hall, at the Forks.

Graze the stalls under the old stable roof — local kitchens, bakeries and the Common's craft pours at the centre tables. Go hungry; one visit never covers it.

St Boniface, along Provencher Boulevard.

Eat French-Métis first: tourtière, pea soup and sugar pie in the French quarter's cafés, then walk it off at the cathedral.

Corydon Village, south of downtown.

Order along the avenue called Little Italy — gelato, sushi and patio dinners in the densest restaurant strip in the city. Summer evenings are the point.

For food tours, browse the Winnipeg listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.

Day trips and more

Three bookings cover Winnipeg at three speeds: the Forks told by its Indigenous guides, the museum downtown, and the river-and-granite day east. Churchill's polar bears sit on the same hub — see Sources on why they are not sold here as a Winnipeg tour.

DIY instead: the northern train and flights make Churchill a trip of its own — plan it as one, in bear season, not as a day bolt-on.

When to go and what it costs

A trail sign in the snow at the Forks, pointing skaters one way and walkers the other

Take the seasons seriously. May to September is the easy city: highs of 19 to 26°C, 16-hour June days, the Fringe in July and Folklorama in August — and mosquitoes on humid river evenings. October cools fast; late-month days sit near 10°C.

Winter is the other Winnipeg. January's daily mean is −16.3°C on the 1991–2020 normals, highs average −11.4°C, and wind chills drop far lower — February answers with Festival du Voyageur and skating on the frozen rivers. The river trail at the Forks becomes the city's winter high street. Come then dressed for it, or do not come then.

Prices in Canadian dollars, at about CA$1.37 to US$1. A bus ride is CA$3.45; a market lunch CA$16 to 24; a museum ticket CA$20 to 26. A backpacker: CA$95 to 140 a day. Mid-range — a Forks-side room, bistro dinners, a museum day: CA$260 to 390 a day. A splurge day at the Fairmont passes CA$600.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for a walking prairie city with honest weather — the list is the base; the paragraph after it matters here. This is the full list:

The Winnipeg extras are not optional from November to March: a parka rated for −30°C, thermal layers, insulated boots with ice grip, an ear-covering hat, a scarf or balaclava, and mittens over gloves — frostbite finds exposed skin in minutes at a −40 wind chill. In summer, swap in insect repellent for river evenings.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

The Manitoba Legislative Building and its Golden Boy, across from Broadway in Winnipeg

English runs the city, French runs St Boniface, and both are official — signs and museums work in either. Winnipeg also holds one of Canada's largest urban Indigenous populations and a proud Métis heritage, told as living culture.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Hello and bonjourhello, both waysThank you and mercithank youExcuse meexcuse meThe bill, pleasethe bill, please

Sort entry paperwork before booking anything non-refundable. US citizens need only a valid US passport — no visa and no eTA — and US lawful permanent residents are also eTA-exempt, travelling on passport plus proof of status such as a green card. Most other visa-exempt nationals flying in, British, EU and Australian holders among them, need an eTA (CA$7, online); arriving by land or sea, they do not. Visa-required nationals need a visitor visa. Cannabis is legal in Canada and still cannot cross the border either way.

Safety and health

Dress for the cold you will actually meet

Extreme cold is the headline health risk: at January wind chills, frostbite can start on exposed skin in under ten minutes. Cover ears, cheeks and fingers, and shorten outdoor stretches — the skywalk and the indoor market exist for a reason.

Use ordinary city care downtown after dark

The centre is walked late on event nights, but some downtown streets ask for awareness: keep phones pocketed, stay on lit main streets, and take a licensed taxi or rideshare for the last stretch.

Respect the rivers in every season

The Red and the Assiniboine run high, silty and fast — swim only at supervised beaches outside the city. In winter, skate only on officially opened, tested trail sections; the Forks posts daily conditions, and locals testing closed ice are not a guide.

Know the numbers and the cover

Dial 911 for emergencies; hospitals treat urgent cases first and bill later, so travel insurance matters — a US health plan rarely covers Canada. Pharmacies handle the small stuff; in summer the honest nuisances are mosquitoes and sun.

About 18% lands on the room: 5% federal GST, 7% Manitoba retail sales tax, and the city's 6% accommodation tax on stays under 30 nights (6% since 1 April 2024, By-law 70/2008) — all on top of quoted rates.

Ignore pre-2025 guides: the network was renumbered on 29 June 2025, so the old airport routes 15 and 20 no longer exist — the airport buses are now D12, D13 and 224. One fare (CA$3.45 cash, CA$3.10 peggo) includes 90-minute transfers; children 11 and under ride free with a fare-paying adult.
