Pattaya: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Suvarnabhumi, bound for Pattaya — the two-hour coach ride down the motorway is part of the trip, as banana fields give way to the towers over the bay. This guide covers the airport run, where to sleep from the landmark tower to a capsule pod, the first-night dinner plan, a first day from the Big Buddha to the Naklua fish market, and the island, temple and garden days that fill the week.

The short version

You just landed in Pattaya. Settle in

Land at Suvarnabhumi and treat the ride south as stage one: immigration, the coach down the motorway, and Pattaya's towers growing on the horizon.

Set up your data before you leave the terminal: a Yesim eSIM loads a Thailand data plan in minutes, so maps, Grab and the bus times work from the kerb. For a longer Thailand trip, compare Saily and Airalo as the alternatives.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

Sort the paperwork before you fly: file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours of arrival, and check your stamp on the spot — visa-exempt entries now get 30 days, not 60.

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Rows of white beach umbrellas seen from above on the sand at Pattaya Beach

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

In a hurry? Taxi is the fastest option listed, at about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Watching the budget? Airport coach (Roong Reuang) is the cheapest option listed, at about ฿170.

Heavy bags, a group, or a late arrival? Taxi takes you door to door — ฿1,200 to ฿1,500, about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Airport coach (Roong Reuang)

Departs BKK Level 1, Gate 8 roughly hourly from about 06:00 to 22:00; buy at the Gate 8 counter or online; drops at the North Pattaya Bus Terminal, where songthaews and Grab cover the last stretch

Priceabout ฿170Journeyabout 2 hours

Bell Travel coach and hotel drop-off

Fewer departures, about every two hours between 08:00 and 18:00; the fare includes the minivan from the Pattaya station to your hotel door; book online ahead in high season

Taxi

Use the public taxi desk on Level 1 and agree the all-in price, motorway tolls included, before you set off; the meter alone does not apply to Pattaya runs

The departures forecourt at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is Pattaya's real airport, about 120 km north by motorway. Two coach companies run the route: Roong Reuang, roughly hourly from Level 1, Gate 8, and Bell Travel, fewer departures but with a minivan from its station to your hotel. The airport rides are these:

In town, the songthaew — blue pickup trucks with benches in the back, also called baht buses — run the transport system. The set loop runs south down Beach Road and back north up Second Road, with branches to Jomtien and Naklua: hail one, climb in, press the bell to stop, pay the driver. The loop fare is 15 baht, 20 for longer cross-town runs and late at night. One rule matters: never name a destination before boarding, because that turns the ride into a private charter at a price you did not agree — ride the loop, or agree a charter price first. Motorcycle taxis in orange vests cover short hops, Grab and Bolt both work well, and the Koh Larn ferry leaves from Bali Hai Pier.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price — worth it with kids or a late flight. Driving from BKK, price the pickup on AutoEurope first, and remember Thailand drives on the left.

In the city

Start with the shape of the place. Walk Beach Road in the cool of the morning, from the Amari headland to Bali Hai Pier, then ride up to the Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai on Pratumnak Hill — an 18-metre golden Buddha — and take the panorama from the viewpoint beside the Pattaya City sign.

Cool off at midday in Central Pattaya or Terminal 21, then give the afternoon to the north end: the Naklua fish market and a seafood dinner as the boats come in. The bay is for looking at and boating on; for swimming, the water is clearest off Koh Larn and along Jomtien and Dongtan beaches.

Book the headline days before you arrive, because the island boats sell out first — browse the Pattaya listings on GetYourGuide for the water days, and compare Klook for attraction tickets.

Give day two to the Sanctuary of Truth and Nong Nooch, and keep one slow morning for Jomtien's café strip.

After you land in Pattaya: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Hilton Pattaya.
Splurge

Hilton Pattaya.

Best for the full-service splurge above CentralFestival

The city's landmark tower: 34 storeys rising out of CentralFestival Pattaya Beach at 333/101 Beach Road, 304 rooms with bay-view balconies, a 16th-floor infinity pool that pours into the horizon, and a rooftop bar for the sunset hour.

Holiday Inn Pattaya by IHG.
Mid-range

Holiday Inn Pattaya by IHG.

Best for a quieter north Beach Road base by Terminal 21

A big, well-run four-star at 463/68 Pattaya Sai 1 Road, the quiet north end of Beach Road by Terminal 21: 531 rooms with sea-view balconies, two pools, the songthaew loop at the door.

Nonze Hostel.
Budget

Nonze Hostel.

Best for a design-led budget pod on Beach Road

A capsule hostel at 183/6 Moo 10 Pattaya Beach Road, next to Royal Garden Plaza: private pods with sliding doors, a rooftop café over the beach, and guest ratings around 9.4 out of 10. Five minutes from Walking Street, but the pods are quiet.

Base yourself on or just behind Beach Road for a first visit — everything runs off the songthaew loop. Choose Naklua and Wong Amat, up north, for calmer streets and better sand, and Jomtien for a slower, more local feel at lower prices.

Book any of the three early for the November to February season. Confirm whether the quoted total includes the 7% VAT and any service charge.

Where to eat first

Grilled prawns, the centrepiece of a Pattaya seafood dinner

Eat the sea on day one. Pattaya's table is Gulf seafood, grilled and wok-fried: whole fish, crab fried rice, hoy tod oyster omelettes, som tam with salted crab, and prawns the size of your thumb. The resort fronts charge resort prices; the real kitchens sit a street or two back, and up in Naklua where the fleet lands. Three first stops:

Mum Aroi.

Map → The beloved Naklua seafood house, out by the old fishing port: tables over the water, tanks of live fish and crab, prices the tour groups never find. Go at sunset; order the grilled prawns and a whole steamed fish.

Leng Kee.

Map → A central Pattaya institution on Pattaya Klang, cooking Chinese-Thai comfort food since the 1960s, open late: roast duck, crab omelette, and rice soup for when the heat kills your appetite.

Thepprasit Night Market.

Map → The weekend market (Friday to Sunday) on Thepprasit Road: a hundred stalls of skewers, curries, mango sticky rice and fried insects for the brave. Arrive hungry, graze slowly, pay in small notes.

Day trips and more

Three escapes fill the classic Pattaya week: the island offshore, the wooden temple in Naklua, the gardens down the coast. Carry sunscreen and a swim kit — two of the three end in the water.

When to go and what it costs

A wide sandy beach and hotel towers in Pattaya

November to February is the sweet spot: dry, breezy, around 30°C by day. March to May turns properly hot, into the mid-30s, and June to October is the rainy season — usually a hard afternoon downpour rather than a washout, though rough seas can pause the Koh Larn boats, so keep one flexible day. The city fills at New Year and over Songkran in mid-April.

A backpacker in a hostel pod, on street food and songthaews: ฿1,200 to ฿1,800 a day. Mid-range — a four-star room, seafood dinners and a boat day: ฿3,500 to ฿5,500 a day. A splurge day with the tower hotel and a private boat passes ฿12,000 without trying.

Anchor prices: songthaew ฿15, Koh Larn ferry ฿40, Sanctuary of Truth ฿500, Nong Nooch from ฿500. Pattaya still undercuts Bangkok on rooms and food at every level.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for heat, sun and one boat day — the list below is the full base kit:

Add the Pattaya extras: swim kit that lives in the daypack, reef-safe sunscreen for Koh Larn, a dry pouch for the speedboat, and a light cover-up — the Sanctuary of Truth and the Big Buddha both ask for covered shoulders and knees. The rain jacket earns its place June to October.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

A golden Buddha image against the sky at a Thai temple

Thai is tonal and the script is its own, but the resort core runs on English. Greet with a wai — palms together, small bow — and a sawadee; never touch anyone's head, never point your feet at a person or a Buddha image, and take shoes off where the signs ask.

Four phrases do most of the work:

SawadeehelloKhop khunthank youTao raihow muchCheck binthe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Thailand cut the visa exemption from 60 days to 30 on 15 September 2026: visitors from 60 countries, including the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan and India, now get 30 days on arrival. One 30-day extension is possible at immigration, about ฿1,900 and always at the officer's discretion. Your passport should be valid for at least six months, and airlines can ask for proof of onward travel.

Every foreign arrival also files the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): free, online at tdac.immigration.go.th, within 72 hours before you land; the QR code arrives by email. It is not a visa, and any website charging you to file it is a scam.

Do not budget for an entry fee. Thailand's long-discussed tourism fee — 300 baht in the old plans — is not in force: it has been postponed again and is not collected at any airport.

Safety and health

Jet ski and rental damage claims are the classic shakedown

Demands of ฿20,000 to ฿50,000 for "damage" that was already there are reported every season; rental cars and bikes get the same treatment. Film a slow 360-degree video of any vehicle before you take it, never surrender your passport as collateral — hand over a copy — and if a dispute turns heated, stop negotiating and call the Tourist Police on 1155.

Watch your drink in the nightlife districts

The bar streets are mostly good-natured, but the rules are the same as anywhere: buy your own drinks, keep them in your hand, agree the price of anything offered before it reaches the table, and check the bill before paying. Use reputable venues and a Grab ride home after a late night.

The road is the biggest everyday risk

Thailand's roads are unforgiving, and Pattaya's mix of buses, songthaews and fast bikes rewards attention. Rent a motorbike only with the right licence and insurance, wear the helmet, and remember traffic drives on the left. For most visitors the 15-baht songthaew is the safer vehicle, day and night.

Thai law is strict, and it is enforced

Cannabis is medical-only since June 2025: flower needs a Thai doctor's prescription, foreign prescriptions do not count, smoking in public draws fines up to ฿25,000, and harder drugs carry severe penalties up to life imprisonment. Vapes are illegal. And never say or post anything critical of the Thai monarchy — lèse-majesté is a criminal offence with long prison sentences.

Pattaya questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The things travellers ask in the first 48 hours: the airport that is in Bangkok, the 30-day stamp and the 15-baht truck that runs the town.

Fares checked against Roong Reuang and Bell Travel listings and Pattaya City fare announcements, October 2026; entry rules against the Royal Gazette change of September 2026 and the Immigration Bureau TDAC portal.

Ride the Roong Reuang coach from Level 1, Gate 8 at Suvarnabhumi: about two hours, roughly hourly 06:00 to 22:00, about ฿170, to the North Pattaya Bus Terminal. Bell Travel runs fewer coaches at about ฿325 including a minivan to your hotel. Taxis run ฿1,200 to ฿1,500.

Thirty days. Thailand cut the visa exemption from 60 days to 30 on 15 September 2026 for visitors from 60 countries, including the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan and India. One 30-day extension is possible at immigration for about ฿1,900, at the officer's discretion.

Yes — every foreign arrival must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before landing. It is free at tdac.immigration.go.th, filed within 72 hours of arrival; the QR code arrives by email. It is not a visa, and any site charging you to file it is a scam.

Only if you are already in Thailand. U-Tapao sits about 45 km south of Pattaya but takes domestic flights only — from Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Udon Thani. No Bangkok or international flights land there, so almost everyone arrives via BKK.

They are blue pickup trucks running a set loop: south down Beach Road, back north up Second Road, with branches to Jomtien and Naklua. Hail one, climb in the back, press the bell when you want off and pay the driver 15 baht (20 for longer runs and late at night). Never name a destination before boarding: that turns the ride into a charter at an unagreed price.

From Bali Hai Pier, at the south end of Walking Street. The ferry to Na Baan pier costs 40 baht, takes about 45 minutes and runs roughly seven times a day from 07:00, last boat back 18:00; boats to Tawaen Beach run in the mornings. Shared speedboats take 15 to 20 minutes for about 150 baht.

Fares change — the coach operators and Pattaya City announcements always win.
