You have just landed in Kayseri or Nevşehir, bound for Göreme — and that is the right way round. Cappadocia is a region, not a town: a high Anatolian plateau of volcanic tuff eroded into fairy chimneys, cave churches and whole cities underground, and Göreme is the village at its heart. The arrival runs on pre-booked shuttles, because no bus or train meets your flight; the days run on dawn, because that is when a hundred balloons lift over the valleys. This guide walks it in order: which airport to choose, the transfer maths, where to sleep inside the rock, the first testi kebab, the balloon booking strategy, the Red and Green tour circuits, the Museum Pass sums, Türkiye's entry rules, and the one tax line to check on your cave-hotel quote.

You just landed in Cappadocia. Sort the pre-booked shuttle first — nothing meets your flight unless you arranged it — then book the balloon for your first morning, because weather cancels flights and spare mornings are the whole strategy. Keep an Airalo eSIM live for transfer vouchers and maps, and book the balloon and the Red and Green tours early — in season they sell out days ahead.
Quick facts
Airport
Two gateways Kayseri Erkilet (ASR), about 75 km east with the most flights, and Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV), about 40 km west and closest to Göreme — Both are served from Istanbul — NAV the shorter ride, ASR better on schedule and price.
Getting in
About 40 minutes from NAV and 1 hr 15 min from ASR and every ride is pre-booked, because no public bus meets flights — Book ahead through transfer companies or your cave hotel, with your flight number and hotel name.
Currency
The Turkish lira (TRY) cards are widely accepted, cash still runs the dolmuş, taxis and small sites — Tours and balloon flights are often priced in euros; ATMs line Göreme's main street.
Languages
Turkish English is widely spoken in Göreme's hotels, agencies and restaurants — Museum signage runs in Turkish and English; a few Turkish phrases earn warmth.
Time zone
Türkiye Time (TRT, UTC+3) all year the country does not move its clocks — One zone nationwide — domestic connections never change your clock.
Emergency
112 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in Türkiye The nearest full hospital is in Nevşehir, about 15 minutes away; Göreme has pharmacies.
Plugs
Type C and F sockets, 230 volts the standard European two-pin — US, UK and Australian visitors need an adapter; cave rooms can be short on sockets.
Tap water
Treated and generally safe, though heavily chlorinated most cave hotels serve filtered water at breakfast — Many visitors buy bottled for taste; large bottles are cheap.
Tourist tax
Türkiye's accommodation tax runs at a temporary 1% of the room price until 31 December 2026, then returns to 2% Charged on the room and extras sold with the stay — check whether your quote includes it.
Best months
April to June and September to October mild days, calm dawn air and the balloons flying most mornings — July and August are hot and crowded; winter brings snow and more balloon cancellations.
Map
Find your arrival stop, hotel, and first meal. Stays, sights, and landmarks in Cappadocia — live hotel prices plus the key places from this guide.
Land at Kayseri or Nevşehir: no station, no bus rank, no taxi queue — Cappadocia arrivals run on bookings made the day before. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board; the road crosses a pale plateau until the fairy chimneys rise.
Set up data before you leave the terminal — a Türkiye plan on an Airalo eSIM loads fast, so maps and your transfer voucher work straight away. For a longer trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
Run the arrival checklist in this order:
Book the airport transfer before you fly — shared shuttle or private car, arranged through your hotel or a transfer company
Book the balloon for your first morning, not your last — weather cancels flights often, leaving spare mornings to retry
Drop your bags, then walk Göreme's main street end to end — agencies, ATMs and the Open Air Museum road all sit on it
Check the tax line on hotel quotes: the 1% accommodation tax runs through 2026 (see Quick facts), and cave hotels quote in euros as often as lira.
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked your arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
Shared shuttle from Nevşehir (NAV)
There is no public bus from NAV to Göreme — the shuttle is the budget option and it must be pre-booked with your flight number and hotel name, through a transfer company or your hotel. Prices conflict across sellers (about €8 to €30 per person); about €15 is the honest middle.
Priceabout €15 per personJourneyabout 50 min
Shared shuttle from Kayseri (ASR)
Must be pre-booked like every Cappadocia airport ride — shuttles meet specific flights and there is no walk-up service. Book through your hotel or a transfer company; sellers quote €10 to €20 per person on this route.
Priceabout €15 per personJourneyabout 1 hr 30 min
Private transfer from Nevşehir (NAV)
The fastest arrival of the four: a driver waits at NAV arrivals with a name board and drives straight to your hotel. Pre-book with your flight number — the driver tracks delays. Published 2026 rate cards start at €45 per vehicle to Göreme.
Pricefrom €45 per vehicleJourneyabout 40 min
Private transfer from Kayseri (ASR)
Worth it for late arrivals, groups and heavy luggage: one fixed price per vehicle from ASR arrivals to your Göreme door, booked ahead with your flight number. Published 2026 rate cards start at €80 per vehicle on this longer route.
Pricefrom €80 per vehicleJourneyabout 1 hr 15 min
Göreme is a village crossed on foot in ten minutes, but its airports sit in other towns — the transfer is the trip's one real logistics problem.
There is no public bus from either airport to Göreme.
In Göreme, walk. The Open Air Museum is a 20-minute walk east of the centre. For the valleys and towns, dolmuş minibuses run to Uçhisar, Avanos, Ürgüp and Nevşehir through the day for small cash fares; taxis cover the gaps.
A Kiwitaxi transfer or Welcome Pickups puts a driver in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price it on AutoEurope: a car earns its keep on Ihlara days, not in Göreme.
In the city
Wake before dawn — the ritual the whole town runs on. From a cave-hotel terrace or Sunset Point, watch a hundred balloons lift into a pink sky. Flying in one is the splurge (see Day trips); watching with coffee costs nothing.
Walk to the Göreme Open Air Museum while the light is good. The UNESCO-listed complex packs a dozen rock-cut churches into one hillside — the Dark Church (€6 extra, and worth it) holds the region's best frescoes. Entry runs €20; a Museum Pass Cappadocia (about €65, valid 3 days) covers it plus Zelve and the underground cities, and pays for itself. Go at opening or late afternoon to dodge the tour-bus wave.
Spend midday the local way: lunch, then the valleys in softening light. Pigeon Valley runs from Göreme's edge to Uçhisar, its cliffs drilled with dovecotes; Love Valley's pillars stand a short taxi ride north. End at Sunset Point as the rock turns rose. Browse GetYourGuide's Cappadocia listings for balloon flights and day tours, and compare Klook when stacking activities.
After you land in Cappadocia: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Sultan Cave Suites.
Best for the classic balloon-terrace splurge — cave suites, spa and Seten restaurant on Aydınlı hill
Stay on Aydınlı hill at Aydinli Sokak No:40, in 35 cave and stone suites under the most photographed rooftop in Göreme — antique-furnished rooms, private terraces, a seasonal pool and a spa. Book it for the classic balloon-terrace stay.
Best for the family-run all-rounder — cave rooms, garden pool, hammam and dawn-balloon terraces
Sleep at Aydınlı Mahallesi, Yavuz Sokak No:1, in cave rooms and fairy-chimney suites around a flower-filled garden — rated 9.4 out of 10 by Expedia guests, with a pool, a cave hammam and dawn-balloon terraces. Check-in runs from 14:00. Book it for the warm, family-run all-rounder.
Best for a cave room at a hostel-grade price — breakfast, pool and the bus station a short walk away
Bed down at Orta Mahallesi, Kazım Eren Sokak No:23, a short walk from the bus station — 20 cave rooms, an open-buffet breakfast, a pool and a travel library. Book it for a cave room at a hostel-grade price.
Sleep in Göreme, and sleep in a cave — the carved rooms are the point, cut into the same soft tuff as the churches. Terraces matter more than thread counts: the balloon show happens above your roof at dawn.
Book well ahead for September and October.
Where to eat first
Göreme's restaurants cluster on the main street and its lanes, and the cooking is Anatolian: slow stews, grilled meats, bread from the oven.
Seten Restaurant, on Aydınlı hill beside Sultan Cave Suites.
Start with the fine-dining take: Anatolian dishes in a stone dining room with the terrace view over town — the celebration dinner of a Göreme stay, so book ahead in season.
Dibek, in Göreme's old centre.
Eat the testi kebab where it is a ritual: beef and vegetables sealed in a clay pot, slow-cooked, then cracked open at your table. Order ahead when you book — the pot needs hours.
Pumpkin Göreme, off the main street.
Settle into the family-run room travellers pass hand to hand: pumpkin soup, home-style mains and a famous pumpkin dessert, at prices the terrace places do not match.
Order çay everywhere, and try gözleme, the flatbread, from the griddles near the museum road. For food tours, browse the Cappadocia listings on GetYourGuide and book ahead.
Day trips and more
Three bookings cover the essentials: the balloon, the north (Red) circuit and the south (Green) circuit. Carry water and a layer.
Sunrise balloon flight over Göreme
Rise an hour before dawn for pickup, watch the envelope inflate, then drift for about an hour over fairy chimneys and valleys as the sun clears the plateau, landing to champagne and a flight certificate. It runs about 3 hours door to door from about US$117, and cancels whenever the wind says so. Check availability →
Green Tour
Descend into Derinkuyu, the largest underground city, walk the Melendiz river canyon in Ihlara past rock-cut churches, eat lunch by the water at Belisırma and finish at Selime, a cathedral-sized monastery carved from one rock. The tour runs about 9 hours with Göreme pickup, from about US$20. Check availability →
Red Tour
Cover the northern highlights: the view from Uçhisar Castle, the mushroom chimneys of Paşabağ, the abandoned cave village at Zelve, the stone animals of Devrent Valley and a pottery wheel in Avanos, where Red River clay is thrown. It runs about 7 hours with lunch and Göreme pickup, from about US$19. Check availability →
Leave a spare half-day for the Red and Rose Valleys on foot — trailheads start at Göreme's edge and the rock glows at sunset.
When to go and what it costs
JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec
Come April to June or September to October: days in the high teens and low 20s Celsius, calm dawn air, and the balloons flying most mornings. September is the sweet spot — harvest light and warm evenings.
Come in summer for guaranteed heat and guaranteed company: July and August push past 30°C at midday, museum queues peak, and balloon seats sell out days ahead. Sightsee early and late, and siesta like a local.
Come in winter for the quiet version: snow on the chimneys, empty churches and the cheapest cave suites of the year — with more balloon cancellations and nights well below freezing.
Budget by the fixed costs, not the headline. The shared shuttle runs about €15 against €45 to €80 for a private car, a Museum Pass about €65 against €20 for one museum — the variables are the balloon (from about US$117) and the cave suite, which doubles between January and September.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for a high plateau that swings — cold dawns even in August, hot middays, and wind on every viewpoint:
Sort entry paperwork before booking anything non-refundable. Most visitors need nothing: holders of US, UK, Canadian, EU, Australian, New Zealand and Japanese passports — among many others — enter Türkiye visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The old e-Visa requirement for Americans and Canadians ended in December 2023; any site still selling them one is selling something unneeded.
Know which document your passport needs. If your nationality is not visa-exempt, the official e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr is the only channel — fees vary by nationality, and lookalike sites charge multiples. Some nationalities qualify only with conditions, such as a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa.
Carry real validity on your passport: Türkiye requires at least 60 days beyond your stay, so a full 90-day visit needs about 150 days from arrival. The officer at the desk makes the final call.
Safety and health
Treat the balloon rules as the safety system working
Flights are licensed and the morning's go or no-go is a weather call by the aviation authority, not the operator — cancellations in wind or fog are routine and not negotiable. Never let a reschedule argument push you toward an unlicensed flight.
Mind the rock underfoot
Tuff is soft and crumbly: valley trails erode at the edges, cave sites involve steep stairs, low doorways and unlit stretches, and the underground cities descend in narrow one-way tunnels. Watch children at unfenced viewpoints, and skip the underground cities if confined spaces or bad knees are an issue.
Respect the plateau climate
Göreme sits at about 1,100 metres: the air is dry, the sun strong, and the temperature can swing 15 degrees between a balloon dawn and midday. Drink water on trail days, carry the layer you shed at noon, and take winter cold seriously — snow and ice close trails and cancel flights.
Sort health cover before you fly
Türkiye's public system does not cover visitors free of charge, and private care is billed — carry travel insurance with medical limits. The full hospital is in Nevşehir; 112 reaches police, ambulance and fire.
The two airports, the balloon gamble and the pass maths, in short.
Facts checked October 2026.
Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) is closest — about 40 km, 40 minutes by private transfer — but small, with few daily Istanbul flights. Kayseri Erkilet (ASR) is about 75 km, 1 hr 15 min away, with more, often cheaper flights. Neither has a public bus to Göreme; both need a pre-booked transfer.
Only by pre-booked ride. Shared shuttles run about €15 per person, private transfers from €45 per vehicle (NAV) and €80 (ASR), booked through transfer companies or your cave hotel with your flight number and hotel name. No public bus serves either airport, and no taxi rank is reliable.
You rebook the next morning or take a refund — the operator confirms the evening before or at pickup. The go/no-go call is the civil aviation authority's weather decision, and in windy spells flights cancel for days running. Book it for your first morning and cancellations leave you spare mornings.
Yes, if you visit the state sites: the pass (about €65, 3 days) covers the Göreme Open Air Museum (€20 on its own), Zelve (€12) and the underground cities (€13 each), so it pays for itself. The Dark Church always costs €6 extra, pass or no pass.
Three nights minimum: one morning for the balloon, one for the Red Tour in the north, one for the Green Tour to Derinkuyu and Ihlara. Four or five nights add a spare balloon morning, valleys on foot and a slower pace.
April to June and September to October: mild days, calm dawns and the balloons flying most mornings. July and August are hot and crowded. Winter brings snow on the chimneys, the cheapest cave suites, more balloon cancellations and nights below freezing.
Prices are typical 2026 rates in euros (EUR) unless marked US$. Transfer and museum prices verified October 2026.
