Charleston: your first hour after landing

You have just landed in North Charleston, bound for the peninsula — an airport 12 miles out, then one run down I-26 to a city that starts at the City Market and ends at the Battery. This guide covers the ride in, where to sleep from the grand King Street address to an 1840s hostel, a first plate of shrimp and grits, Fort Sumter and the lighthouse island, and the 14% tax and hurricane window that shape a trip's cost.

Settle in

Land at CHS and keep it simple: one small terminal in North Charleston, 12 miles from the peninsula, and every ride leaves from the same curb outside baggage claim.

Set up data before you leave the terminal: a Yesim eSIM loads a US plan in minutes, so maps, the CARTA Transit app and your rideshare all work from the curb. For a longer US trip, compare Saily and Airalo.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

If a cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

The front of Charleston International Airport behind palmetto trees

Charleston International sits in North Charleston, 12 miles north-west of the historic peninsula, and the transfer is a straight choice between cheap and fast. The CARTA Route 11 bus (Dorchester Road / Airport) leaves from the stop near passenger pickup, runs about every 40 minutes on weekdays to Mary and Meeting streets downtown. Rideshares and taxis do the run in about 25 minutes. There is no separate airport express — CARTA's airport service today is Route 11. The airport rides are these:

Once you are on the peninsula, park the car question for good: the historic district is compact, flat and made for walking, and CARTA's DASH shuttle loops it free on three routes — 210 (College of Charleston / Aquarium), 211 (Meeting and King) and 213 (Lockwood and Calhoun), all meeting by the Visitor Center. Regular CARTA buses cost $2 a ride; a 1-day pass is $7. Driving in anyway, know the parking reality: street spaces are scarce and metered at $2 an hour with a 2-hour limit, county garages charge $1 per 20 minutes up to a $24 daily maximum, and most downtown hotels are valet-only.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first, and rent only for the beach and plantation days.

In the city

Start at the Charleston City Market, the four-block open-air shed between Meeting and East Bay streets — go early, watch the sweetgrass basket weavers work, and save your buying for the makers' own stalls. Then walk south on Meeting Street past the Four Corners of Law to White Point Garden and the Battery, the seawall promenade lined with grand houses.

Double back up East Bay Street for Rainbow Row, the thirteen pastel Georgian houses that are the city's signature photograph, then cool off at Waterfront Park — the Pineapple Fountain is the meeting point everyone uses. The Fort Sumter ferry dock sits a short walk north at Liberty Square.

Ride the harbour at least once: the ferry to Fort Sumter, where the Civil War's first shots were fired in April 1861, is the essential trip, and the carriage tours leaving from by the Market are the classic way to hear the city's stories. Book the headline days before you arrive — browse the Charleston listings on GetYourGuide for the boat days, and compare Klook when stacking attraction tickets.

Give day two to the water and the plantations: a morning eco-boat to Morris Island, then an Ashley River road plantation — Middleton Place or Magnolia — with Folly Beach for the swim if light holds.

Budget

Charleston's NotSo Hostel.

Best for budget dorms and privates in an 1840s house near King Street

The peninsula's real budget beds, in an 1840s house at 156 Spring Street, five blocks from King Street: dorms and private rooms, an all-private annex at 33 Cannon Street, parking, Wi-Fi and linens included. Front desk hours are split (08:30 to 11:30 and 17:00 to 21:00), so time your arrival — and book direct, as it has no Expedia page.

Stay on the peninsula for a first visit — the Market, King Street and the Battery all sit inside a 20-minute walk, and the free DASH routes cover the rest. Choose Upper King for the grand hotels by Marion Square, the French Quarter for the landmark houses, and the Cannonborough side streets for the budget beds.

Book any of the three early for spring and festival weekends. Confirm whether the quoted total includes the 14% tax stack.

Where to eat first

A fork lifting a shrimp over a bowl of shrimp and grits

Eat Lowcountry on day one. The dish is shrimp and grits — once a fishermen's breakfast, now the signature plate — with she-crab soup, pimento cheese and benne wafers around it, and Carolina Gold rice under nearly everything. Three first stops:

Husk.

The benchmark, in a Victorian house at 76 Queen Street: the menu is rewritten daily around heirloom Southern ingredients — if it does not come from the South, it does not come through the door. Dinner nightly and weekend brunch; book weeks ahead, or try the bar building next door.

FIG.

Food Is Good, at 232 Meeting Street — two decades in and still the hardest table in town. Seasonal Lowcountry cooking, a James Beard award-winning wine program, reservations opening four weeks out; the full menu runs at the bar. Dinner Tuesday to Saturday.

Iron Rose.

The Mills House's garden-courtyard restaurant at 115 Meeting Street — the gentle first night: Southern plates and spritzes under the pink facade, from breakfast through dinner, no booking battle.

When to go and what it costs

Surfers in the shallows below the Folly Beach pier

March to May is the sweet spot: azaleas, highs around 21 to 27°C, festival season in full swing. September to November runs a close second, with warm sea and thinner crowds. Summer is hot and steamy — July afternoons average about 33°C with a thunderstorm most days — and winter is mild and quiet, around 14°C in January, with the year's best room rates.

Now the honest part: hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking from mid-August into October. Charleston is low and tidal — king tides and heavy rain flood downtown streets even without a named storm, and a tropical system can close the airport and beaches for days. In the peak window, buy refundable rates and travel insurance, and watch the forecast in the week before you fly.

A backpacker in a dorm, on market lunches and the $2 bus: $90 to $120 a day. Mid-range — a French Quarter room, a Husk or FIG dinner, the fort ferry: $280 to $380 a day. A splurge day with Hotel Bennett passes $600 without trying. Parking is the silent line item: $24 a day in a garage or $55 and up for valet, priced in before you call the rental car free.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for heat, humidity and one sudden downpour — a Charleston afternoon storm can arrive inside the hour. This is the full list:

Add the Charleston extras: a swim kit that lives in the daypack (Folly Beach and Morris Island both reward it), shoes that survive wet cobblestones and flooded side streets, and a light layer for air-conditioned restaurants and the harbour ferry breeze.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry

A white church steeple above a palm-lined street in the historic district

English, with a Charleston drawl and a Gullah Geechee heritage the city is proud of — the sweetgrass weavers at the Market and the Gullah tours are living culture, not a performance. Manners run Southern-formal: a greeting before a question, "yes ma'am" and "no sir" from locals of every age, no hurry at the table. Dinner starts early by European standards and kitchens wind down by 22:00.

Four phrases do most of the work:

How y'all doinghello, to a groupThank you kindlythank youCheck, pleasethe bill, pleaseSouth of Broadthe grand streets below Broad Street

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens need only photo ID for a domestic flight. Most visitors from the UK, the EU, Australia, Japan and similar Visa Waiver Program countries enter visa-free for up to 90 days with an ESTA: apply on the official CBP site at least 72 hours before you fly, with an e-passport. The ESTA fee is $40.62 for applications since 16 October 2026 — pay it only on the official site, never a lookalike adding a service charge.

Everyone else needs a US visitor visa arranged well ahead. There is no paperwork at CHS beyond the standard federal inspection — most international visitors clear immigration at their first US airport.

Safety and health

Hurricanes and flooding are the headline risk

The season runs June to November, peaking mid-August to October, and the peninsula floods at king tides and in hard rain even without a storm. Book refundable rates in the peak window, follow weather and city alerts, and never drive or wade through flooded streets.

Heat and humidity punish the unprepared

Summer afternoons sit around 33°C with heavy humidity from May into September. Walk early, rest at midday, carry a litre of water, and treat the harbour breeze as a break, not a cure — heat illness is the commonest visitor emergency.

Swim smart at the barrier islands

Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms all see rip currents and summer jellyfish. Swim near lifeguards where they are posted, obey the sting advice at the beach accesses, and keep off the rocks at the Battery seawall.

Use normal city instincts after dark

The historic district, King Street and the Market are busy and well lit into the evening. Keep to those streets late, lock bikes and cars, and dial 911 for anything urgent — the Medical University hospital on Ashley Avenue covers the peninsula.
