Outer Banks: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Norfolk International, about 90 miles north of the sand — the Outer Banks begin where the Wright Memorial Bridge touches Kitty Hawk. This guide covers the drive in and its real transfer options, where to sleep on the central Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head strip, the 12.75% lodging tax, the first seafood dinner, and the Wright Brothers, lighthouse and dolphin days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Outer Banks. There is no airport on the islands — Norfolk (ORF) is the gateway, about 90 miles north — so the move is a rental car or a pre-booked shuttle over the Wright Memorial Bridge, with an Airalo eSIM live for the drive, groceries bought before the bridge, and the dolphin, kayak and ghost-tour days worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
No commercial airport on the Outer Banks Norfolk International (ORF) in Virginia is the gateway, about 90 miles north — First Flight (FFA) and Dare County Regional (MQI) are general-aviation strips only. Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is the backup gateway, about 200 miles west.
Getting in
Rental car from ORF in about 1 hour 45 minutes; pre-booked private shuttle US$175 to the central strip Every route funnels over the Wright Memorial Bridge into Kitty Hawk. No scheduled bus runs from any airport.
Currency
US dollar (USD) Cards work almost everywhere; carry cash for piers, beach parking and roadside stands.
Languages
English The old Hoi Toider brogue survives on Ocracoke and Hatteras, but standard English runs everything.
Time zone
Eastern Time EDT (UTC-4) in October 2026, EST (UTC-5) after the clocks change on 1 November 2026 — North Carolina observes daylight saving year-round on the national schedule.
Emergency
911 for police, fire and ambulance anywhere in the United States On guarded beaches, follow the lifeguard and flag system first, then 911.
Plugs
Type A and B sockets, 120 volts Visitors from outside North America need an adapter; most chargers accept the voltage.
Tap water
Safe to drink Dare County runs a treated public supply — Refill before long beach and Hatteras days.
Tourist tax
12.75% on lodging 6.75% North Carolina sales tax plus 6% Dare County occupancy tax — Currituck County (Corolla and the north) charges the same 12.75% combined, on hotels and vacation rentals alike.
Best months
May to June and September to October warm water, thinner crowds, lower rates — July and August are peak and priciest. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November.

Settle in

Land at Norfolk and accept the geography: a 100-mile chain of barrier islands with no airport of their own, and the last 90 miles are the trip. Treat the drive south as the arrival, not a delay.

Set up data before you fly — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps work from the ORF kerb. Compare Saily and Yesim for a longer trip. US plans work in the main towns; coverage thins on Hatteras and in the 4x4 area.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Rental car at Norfolk (ORF)

The default arrival: counters at ORF, US 158 south over the Wright Memorial Bridge; rates swing too widely by season and vehicle to quote one figure — book ahead for summer Saturdays, when bridge traffic crawls

PriceVaries by seasonJourneyabout 1 hr 45 min

Private airport shuttle

Private door-to-door cars booked ahead — OBX Rides lists US$175 one-way to Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, per vehicle for up to four passengers with luggage; Duck and Corolla cost more

PriceUS$175 per vehicleJourneyabout 1 hr 45 min

Taxi or rideshare

Not every ORF taxi will make the two-hour run, and rideshare supply is thin late at night — agree the fare before you ride, or pre-book; the US$330 figure is the Welcome Pickups estimate for the route

Priceabout US$330Journeyabout 2 hr

Rental car at Raleigh-Durham (RDU)

The cheaper-flights play: RDU has more nonstops than ORF and often lower fares and rental rates; the drive east on US 64 lands you via Manteo and skips the Wright Memorial Bridge queues

The Wright Memorial Bridge carrying US 158 over Currituck Sound to Kitty Hawk, the road gateway to the Outer Banks

One road runs the Banks: NC 12, the beach road, with US 158 down the northern strip. From Norfolk, US 158 crosses the Wright Memorial Bridge into Kitty Hawk; the towns string south — Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head — before NC 12 continues to Hatteras and the free Ocracoke ferry. The arrivals from ORF:

Choose the rental car if you can: the Banks are close to unvisitable without one. Choose RDU when its flights are much cheaper — the longer drive lands you via Manteo, skipping the summer Saturday bridge queues.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver waits in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself from another airport, price the pickup on AutoEurope first.

On the islands, addresses are given by milepost (MP) — MP 16.5 is a place, not a puzzle. Traffic crawls on summer Saturdays, when rentals turn over; time the bridge for morning or evening.

In the city

There is no city — there are villages strung along one road, and the central strip is your first-hour base. Start at Kill Devil Hills, where the Wright Brothers National Memorial marks the dunes of the first powered flight on 17 December 1903: the granite monument, the reconstructed camp and hangar, and the flight-path stones below. Entry is US$10 per person for ages 16 and up.

Walk Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head next — the tallest living dune system on the Atlantic coast, free to enter, and the sunset seat of the Banks. Kites and hang gliders ride the wind the Wrights came for.

Give an afternoon to Manteo, the Roanoke Island town across the causeway: a boardwalk waterfront, the Roanoke Marshes Light and the island where England's first American colony vanished in the 1590s. Then drive south to Bodie Island Lighthouse — grounds free, the climb US$10 when running.

Browse GetYourGuide for the water and evening tours below, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Days Inn by Wyndham Kill Devil Hills Oceanfront - Wilbur.

Best for budget oceanfront beds in Kill Devil Hills, half a mile from the Wright Brothers Memorial

Bed down at 201 North Virginia Dare Trail in Kill Devil Hills — a simple oceanfront motel with a pool, breakfast and the beach over the dune, half a mile from the Wright Brothers Memorial. Book it for the cheapest sound sleep on the ocean side.

Base on the central strip for a first visit — Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head put the memorial, the dunes and dinner inside 15 minutes. Duck and Corolla, north, are quieter and pricier; Hatteras, south, is wilder and an hour further. Most visitors rent houses by the week; for a first night, these three hotels cover the strip.

Check the tax line when you book: 12.75% lodging tax is added on top of the quoted rate, in hotels and vacation rentals alike.

Where to eat first

Fresh oysters on ice with lemon, an Outer Banks first-night order

Eat seafood where the boats land it: shrimp, blue crab, oysters and the catch of the day — tuna, mahi and rockfish in season — with hushpuppies on the side. Three first stops:

Sam and Omie's, 7228 South Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head.

Eat at the oldest restaurant on the Banks, opened in 1937 to feed fishermen before the Oregon Inlet boats — a cedar-shake cottage at Milepost 16.5, across from Jennette's Pier. The first-night answer since before the bridge was paved.

Owen's Restaurant, Milepost 16.5, Nags Head.

Book the Banks' fine-dining elder, family-run since 1946 — local seafood and steaks among maritime salvage and ship models. Dinner only, and it fills; reserve ahead.

Miller's Waterfront Restaurant, on the Nags Head causeway.

Graze the sound-side tables at sunset — shrimp, crab cakes and whatever the Wanchese boats brought in. Arrive before the sun does.

For fishing charters and food tours, browse the Dare County listings on GetYourGuide and book the boat day early.

Day trips and more

Three escapes run off the central strip: a dolphin cruise from a fishing village, a clear-kayak paddle under a lighthouse, and a lantern-lit evening in Manteo. Book the water days ahead in season.

Wanchese dolphin cruise

Two hours from Wanchese, the Roanoke Island fishing village tourists drive past: board the 40-foot Harbor Star pontoon and watch Atlantic bottlenose dolphins fish, play and teach their young in the sound, the crew reading the water as you go. From US$20. Check availability →

A kayaker paddling a calm marsh creek on the sound side of the Outer Banks

Bodie Island by clear kayak

Two hours in a clear kayak on the sound side of Bodie Island, the lighthouse filling the view while crabs and shrimp move under the hull. Small group, limited to 10, guided, beginner-friendly. From about US$95. Check availability →

The Roanoke Marshes Light, a white screw-pile lighthouse on the Manteo waterfront on Roanoke Island

Manteo ghost tour

Ninety minutes by lantern through downtown Manteo with OBX Ghost Tours, the original ghost walk: shipwreck dead, lost colonists and the spirits locals still report. Rated 4.7 from recent reviews, from about US$23. Check availability →

Leave a spare day for the run south: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse at Buxton — grounds open, but closed for climbing during its restoration, not expected to reopen to climbers in 2026 — and the free, first-come Hatteras to Ocracoke car ferry, about an hour each way.

When to go and what it costs

Sunset over the water on the Outer Banks, silhouetted figures on the shore

May to June and September to October are the sweet spot: warm ocean, thinned crowds and prices, restaurants still open. July and August bring the full surge — highest rates, Saturday bridge queues, every table booked. Winter is quiet, cheap and windy, with nor'easters and many businesses closed or on short hours.

Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking from late August into October. It is part of the deal here: Dare County orders mandatory evacuations when a storm threatens, and NC 12 floods on Hatteras in lesser weather. Book refundable rates in the peak weeks.

A backpacker in a motel room, on diner breakfasts and beach days: US$90 to 130 a day outside peak season. Mid-range — an oceanfront room, seafood dinners, one paid tour: US$250 to 400 a day. A splurge day passes US$600. Every figure climbs in July and August.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for strong sun, shifting wind and water on three sides — sound, ocean and the rain that arrives sideways. This is the full list:

Add the Outer Banks extras: swim kit that lives in the daypack, a fleece for sound-side evenings, and insect repellent — the marsh mosquitoes work the calm hours. Drivers heading north of Corolla need a 4x4 and a tyre gauge.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

The boardwalk over the marsh at Bodie Island Lighthouse, its black and white bands in the distance

English runs everything, with a local vocabulary worth learning in hour one. The Banks navigate by milepost and split every address into ocean side and sound side.

Four terms do most of the work:

OBXthe Outer BanksMileposthow every address is givenSound sidethe calm water west of the islandsHoi Toiderthe old Ocracoke and Hatteras brogue

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens need nothing beyond normal identification. Most international visitors enter under the Visa Waiver Program with an approved ESTA, or on a B1/B2 visitor visa — apply through official US channels only, and carry your passport for the flight into Norfolk.

There is no entry fee or permit for the Outer Banks themselves. Passes apply only to activities: the Park Service charges for the Wright Brothers Memorial and lighthouse climbs, and an ORV permit covers driving on the National Seashore beaches.

Safety and health

Swim where the lifeguards are — rip currents are the real danger here

The Atlantic side runs strong rips, especially around piers and after storms. Swim on guarded beaches, read the flags, and if a rip takes you, swim parallel to the beach until it lets go.

Take hurricane orders as orders, not advice

The season peaks from late August into October. When Dare County orders an evacuation, visitors go — roads off are few, NC 12 floods early on Hatteras, and re-entry is staged by permit. Keep the car fuelled and know your route off.

Know the beach-driving rules before you drop a tyre on the sand

North of Corolla the road ends: Carova and the 4x4 beaches have no paved roads, 4WD is mandatory, and a Currituck County permit is needed to park on the beach in season. On the National Seashore, driving needs an NPS ORV permit — US$50 for 10 days.

Respect the sun, the heat and the wild horses

Summer humidity is serious: water and shade are health kit, not comfort. The Corolla wild horses are protected — county law keeps people at least 50 feet away, and feeding them can kill them. For anything serious, dial 911.

Outer Banks questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The Norfolk drive, the missing airport and the lodging tax, in short.

Transfer pricing checked against the OBX Rides rates page and Welcome Pickups Norfolk estimates, October 2026; lodging tax against Dare County occupancy-tax reporting and Outer Banks rental sources; park fees against National Park Service fee pages, October 2026.

Fly into Norfolk International (ORF) and drive: about 90 miles and 1.5 to 2 hours down US 158, over the Wright Memorial Bridge to Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. A pre-booked private shuttle costs US$175 per vehicle to the central strip; a taxi or rideshare runs about US$330. There is no scheduled bus.

No commercial one. First Flight (FFA) at Kill Devil Hills and Dare County Regional (MQI) at Manteo are general-aviation strips for private planes and charters. Scheduled flights use Norfolk (ORF), about 90 miles north, or Raleigh-Durham (RDU), about 200 miles west with a 3.5 to 4 hour drive.

Yes, in practice. The towns string along 100 miles of NC 12, buses are effectively non-existent, and rideshares thin out fast outside the central strip. North of Corolla the paved road ends entirely — Carova and the 4x4 beaches are reachable only in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

12.75% on top of the quoted rate: 6.75% North Carolina sales tax (4.75% state plus 2% county) plus a 6% Dare County occupancy tax. Currituck County, covering Corolla and the northern beaches, totals the same 12.75%. It applies to hotels and vacation rentals alike.

May to June and September to October: warm water, open restaurants, thinner crowds. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks from late August into October — when Dare County orders an evacuation, visitors must leave, so book refundable rates in the peak weeks.

The Wright Brothers National Memorial charges US$10 per person for ages 16 and up, paid at machines in the car park. The Bodie Island Lighthouse climb costs US$10 when running. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is closed for climbing during its restoration and is not expected to reopen to climbers in 2026, though the grounds are open.

Prices change — the airport, the National Park Service and your transfer operator always win.
