Salt Lake City: your first hour after landing
You have just landed at SLC, the new single-terminal airport about 11 km west of downtown — a Delta hub where the TRAX Green Line leaves from the terminal's own station and the Wasatch Range fills the windscreen all the way in. This guide covers the US$2.50 train and the Free Fare Zone, where to sleep, the pastrami burger and fry sauce ritual, the state liquor-store rules, and the island, salt-flat and city-loop days that fill day two.

You just landed in Salt Lake City. The airport sits about 11 km west of downtown — the TRAX Green Line runs straight in for US$2.50 with an Airalo eSIM live for maps and UTA times, downtown rides inside the Free Fare Zone cost nothing once you arrive, and the Antelope Island sunsets and Bonneville days that fill first are worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Settle in
Touch down at SLC and keep the first hour simple: one train does the whole arrival. The 2020 terminal feeds Concourses A and B — B-gate arrivals face a long, art-filled tunnel walk, so pace yourself.
Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps, UTA times and ride apps work from arrivals. For a longer US trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
The arrival checklist, in order:
- Follow the signs east out of door 1A to Airport Station if you are riding TRAX — buy the ticket at the platform machine before boarding
- Keep your hotel address open on your phone: downtown sits on a strict grid, and addresses read like coordinates (200 South, 300 West)
- Drink water on the ride in — the city sits at 4,226 feet, and the dry Wasatch air catches new arrivals out
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.
Getting around

Times are airport to city centre.
TRAX Green Line (light rail)
About every 15 minutes on weekdays from Airport Station outside door 1A, less often on Sundays; one fare covers 2 hours of transfers — downtown stops are in the Free Fare Zone, but the airport ride itself needs the ticket
Taxi
Yellow Cab runs the airport's on-demand rank and quotes flat rates to downtown and convention addresses before you ride; the rank sits outside arrivals
Rideshare (Uber and Lyft)
Pick-up is in the central lane on the ground level outside the terminal; prices swing with ski weekends and convention arrivals — check both apps before you book
Rental car
Every major brand sits in the Gateway Center beside the parking garage; a car earns its keep for the ski canyons and Park City, while downtown hotels charge for parking

SLC sits about 11 km west of downtown: the TRAX Green Line runs from the terminal's own station straight downtown, and rides inside the Free Fare Zone there cost nothing. The rides in:
Choose TRAX by day with light bags; choose a taxi or rideshare after the last train (about 11.20 pm) or with ski gear in tow. One fare covers two hours of transfers, and a day pass is US$5.
Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pick-up on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep for the canyons and Park City, not downtown, where hotels charge for parking.
In town, three TRAX lines cross the centre, buses cover the grid, and the FrontRunner train runs to Ogden and Provo from Salt Lake Central. The streets are famously wide, so build in extra crossing time.
In the city
Start at Temple Square, the five-block heart of the city: the Tabernacle — home of the Tabernacle Choir's free Sunday broadcast and Thursday rehearsals — the Assembly Hall and the visitor centres all open to everyone. The Salt Lake Temple itself is closed for renovation until 2027: view its spires from the square.
Walk north to the Utah State Capitol: free entry, pioneer murals, and the best free view in the city — the grid, the lake west, the Wasatch east. Return through Memory Grove and City Creek Canyon.
Spend an afternoon on the east bench: the Natural History Museum of Utah and Red Butte Garden sit against the foothills, reached by the TRAX Red Line. Back downtown, browse City Creek Center and The Gateway, catch a Utah Jazz game at the Delta Center in season, and end on Whiskey Street.
Do the orientation early — ride the guided city loop on day one, then walk the grid yourself. Browse GetYourGuide for city tours and lake days, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Book ahead for convention weeks and Sundance spillover in January. Check the tax line: about 15.5% lands on a central room rate (see Quick facts).
Where to eat first

Eat the local rituals first. Utah's signature order is the pastrami burger — a cheeseburger crowned with sliced pastrami — its fries dipped in fry sauce, the pink blend every local chain guards a recipe for. Three first stops:
Crown Burgers, 118 North 300 West.
Order the Crown Burger, the pastrami original, at the family chain that made it a Utah institution in 1978. Counter service, big portions, fry sauce as standard — the correct first lunch, ten minutes from Temple Square.
Red Iguana, 736 West North Temple.
Eat at the mole house Salt Lakers queue for — seven moles over chicken, pork and enchiladas, on the TRAX line west of downtown. Arrive before 6 pm or expect a wait; Red Iguana 2, a few blocks away, takes the overflow.
The soda shops of the valley, on every corner.
Try a Utah soda — a big fountain drink spiked with syrups, purees and cream at drive-through chains like Swig. It is the state's answer to coffee culture, and a friendly cheap thrill.
One rule shapes the evening: wine, spirits and beer over 5% come only from state DABS stores, closed on Sundays — plan a Saturday bottle run if Sunday dinner needs one. For food tours and cooking classes, browse the Salt Lake City listings on GetYourGuide.
Day trips and more
Three escapes cover the valley's landscapes: the island in the lake, the white horizon west, and the city on a guided loop. Carry water and sunscreen — the altitude and salt glare are real.

Great Salt Lake Wildlife and Sunset Experience
Four and a half hours by Sprinter van to Antelope Island: a free-roaming herd of about 600 bison, pronghorn, coyotes and migratory birds, then a short hike up Buffalo Point for sunset over the salt water. Binoculars and pick-up included, from about US$145. Check availability →

Bonneville Salt Flats Guided Tour
Six hours west on I-80, small group with pick-up: walk out onto the 30,000-acre salt crust where land-speed records are set, stop at Great Salt Lake State Park, and photograph Karl Momen's Tree of Utah sculpture on the way. From about US$149. Check availability →

City Sights Guided Bus Tour
Three hours on the city's original sightseeing run, going 45 years: the Utah Capitol, Temple Square, the pioneer trail monument and the Cathedral of the Madeleine, with guides who hop off with you at every stop. From about US$69. Check availability →
Leave a spare day for Park City, 35 minutes east — Main Street, the Utah Olympic Park from the 2002 Games, and the last alpine fall colour — or for the Big Cottonwood Canyon drive to Silver Lake.
When to go and what it costs

May to June and September to October are the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights, canyon wildflowers then maples. October is shoulder season — highs around 18°C, first dustings on the peaks, lifts still shut. Ski season runs December to March, when Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude, about 40 minutes away, earn the city its winter name. Winter also brings inversion days, when haze pools in the valley and clear air sits in the canyons.
A backpacker in a budget room, on TRAX and burger counters: US$60 to 90 a day. Mid-range — a four-star downtown room, Red Iguana dinners, one guided lake day: US$180 to 260 a day. A splurge day with the Grand America passes US$450. Figures jump on convention weeks and in ski season.

Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly

English runs everything, Spanish a close second. The city was founded in 1847 by Latter-day Saint pioneers, and its church history comes with genuine welcome: Temple Square hosts are happy to explain, and nobody will press you. Tip 18 to 20 percent at sit-down restaurants.
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US citizens need nothing beyond their usual ID. Visa Waiver Program visitors need an approved ESTA before boarding — apply on the official CBP site at least 72 hours ahead; the fee is US$40.62 from 16 October 2026, and the authorisation lasts two years for stays of up to 90 days. Everyone else needs a US visitor visa arranged well in advance. Entry is federal — there is no separate Utah paperwork, and no arrival tax.
Salt Lake speech runs on local shorthand — learn the four terms below.
Safety and health
Give the altitude its due on day one
At 4,226 feet, new arrivals tire faster, burn faster and feel alcohol sooner. Drink water before you are thirsty, use the sunscreen you packed, and keep the first evening's drinks modest — Utah's drink-drive limit is 0.05%, the strictest in the country.
Learn the liquor rules before the first evening
Grocery stores sell beer up to 5% ABV every day; wine, spirits and stronger beer come only from state DABS stores, open Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays and holidays. Bars serve until 1 am; restaurants serve alcohol with food. Everyone buying alcohol has needed photo ID since January 2026, whatever their age.
Use normal city care downtown
The centre and Temple Square are busy and well lit; the Pioneer Park area west of downtown is rougher at the edges. Walk the lit avenues late and ride TRAX or a cab for the last stretch.
Respect the lake and the flats
Biting gnats swarm the shorelines in season, there is no shade on Antelope Island or at Bonneville, and summer heat on white salt is fierce. Carry more water than the plan seems to need. For anything serious, dial 911.

Ride the TRAX Green Line from Airport Station, ground level outside door 1A: US$2.50, about 20 minutes to the Arena, City Center and Temple Square stations, trains about every 15 minutes on weekdays. A day pass is US$5. Taxis and rideshares take about 15 minutes for about US$25.
Board and get off inside the downtown Free Fare Zone and TRAX and bus rides are free. The zone does not cover the airport ride — it starts outside it, so buy the US$2.50 ticket at Airport Station; it then covers two hours of transfers.
US citizens need nothing extra. Visa Waiver Program visitors need an approved ESTA before boarding — apply on the official CBP site at least 72 hours ahead; the fee is US$40.62 from 16 October 2026, valid two years for stays up to 90 days. Other visitors need a US visa in advance.
