San José del Cabo: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at SJD, an airport that belongs to San José del Cabo: the historic centre is about 20 minutes south, while Cabo San Lucas waits at the far end of the highway. This guide covers the short ride in, where to sleep from a design resort to a surf hostel, the Embrace It fee and lodging tax, the first tacos, and the Balandra, snorkel and whale days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in San José del Cabo. SJD sits about 11 km north of the historic centre — ride the Ruta del Desierto bus or a booked shuttle straight to Plaza Mijares, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps, and book the Balandra day and winter whale boats that fill first through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Los Cabos International (SJD), about 11 km north of the historic centre Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, Terminal 2 international arrivals. Cabo San Lucas lies another 35 km west.
Getting in
Ruta del Desierto bus MXN 85 to 110, shared shuttle about US$19, taxi US$65 to 85 per vehicle About 20 minutes by road, 40 by bus. Rideshares cannot pick up at the terminal.
Currency
Mexican peso (MXN), about MXN 18.7 to US$1 in October 2026 Cards work at hotels and most restaurants; carry pesos for the bus, markets, taco stands and tips. Prices are often quoted in dollars.
Languages
Spanish, with English widely spoken in hotels, galleries and tour offices Centro shops and taquerias run on Spanish — the phrase chips below cover the essentials.
Time zone
Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) all year Baja California Sur does not change its clocks — Mexico abolished daylight saving in 2022, so flight times never shift by an hour.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in Mexico Keep your insurer's number on your phone; hotels will point you to the nearest clinic.
Plugs
Type A and B sockets, 127 volts the same as the United States and Canada — US and Canadian plugs fit directly. European and British travellers need a simple adapter.
Tap water
Do not drink it straight use the purified water every hotel supplies — The town supply is treated, but locals drink purified water and so should you. Restaurant ice is purified and safe.
Tourist tax
Hotels add 4% lodging tax (ISH) and 16% IVA plus the separate Embrace It fee, MXN 488 in 2026 — Owed by foreign visitors over 12 staying more than 24 hours in Baja California Sur. Pay online only, on the official portal, and keep the QR certificate.
Best months
November to May dry, warm days, whales offshore and the Art Walk in season — June and July turn hot. August to October is hurricane season, with storm days that close the port.

Settle in

Touch down at SJD

Remember which town you picked: the airport sits about 11 km north of Plaza Mijares, while Cabo San Lucas is the far end of the highway. This guide stays in San José — the mission town of galleries and plazas.

Set up data before you leave home

An Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer Mexico trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order

Walk straight through the sales hall after customs — it is staffed by timeshare sellers, not officials; your driver waits beyond it.

Ride into town first and drop your bags

Everything on day one is on foot from your hotel.

Pay the Embrace It fee online if you have not already

Keep the QR certificate on your phone.

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival

AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Palm umbrellas and turquoise water along a San José del Cabo beach, seen from above

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

In a hurry? Authorized taxi is the fastest option listed, at about 20 min.

Watching the budget? Shared shuttle is the cheapest option listed, at about US$19 per person.

Heavy bags, a group, or a late arrival? Authorized taxi takes you door to door — US$65 to 85 per vehicle, about 20 min.

Ruta del Desierto bus

Purple buses from outside Terminal 1, a short walk from Terminal 2; cash in pesos to the driver, frequent by day; the bus runs the Transpeninsular highway, so a centro hotel can mean a short walk from the stop

PriceMXN 85 to 110 (about US$5 to 6)Journeyabout 40 min

Shared shuttle

Book ahead and meet your operator outside arrivals — vans wait to fill and stop at other hotels on the way; San José is the first and cheapest zone from the airport

Priceabout US$19 per personJourneyabout 30 to 45 min

Authorized taxi

Buy the ticket at the official counter inside arrivals — zone fares are per vehicle, not per person; ignore anyone offering rides in the sales hall before the counter

PriceUS$65 to 85 per vehicleJourneyabout 20 min

Pre-booked private transfer

The fixed-price door-to-door pick: the driver waits outside arrivals with a name board and tracks your flight; for San José it usually matches or beats the walk-up taxi

Priceabout US$82 per vehicleJourneyabout 20 min

Passengers outside the terminal at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), the name over the doors

San José is the easy end of Los Cabos: one highway runs to the centro in about 20 minutes, and the town itself is flat and walkable. The rides in from SJD:

Choose the bus with light bags and pesos in hand; choose a shuttle or car late at night, or for the hotel zone, where the bus stop can leave a walk.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep on Balandra days, not in the centro.

In town, the centre walks in minutes. Local buses run the highway to the hotel zone and Cabo San Lucas for a few pesos, and Uber and DiDi work normally here — just not for airport pickups.

In the city

Start at Plaza Mijares, the leafy main square: gazebo, town letters and the Misión San José del Cabo Añuití, founded in 1730, facing it. The streets behind form the Gallery District — art galleries, jewellers and café courtyards in old adobe houses.

Do the Art Walk on a Thursday.

From November to June the Gallery District closes to traffic on Thursday evenings, galleries stay open late and vendors sell elotes and churros under the flags. It is the town's best night — plan the week around it.

Walk east to the San José Estuary, the palm-lined bird sanctuary beside the hotel zone — herons, ospreys and quiet paths at dawn. For sand, Palmilla and La Playita are the swimmable local beaches; the hotel-zone beach is for walking and sunsets, not swimming.

Skip a same-day dash to Cabo San Lucas.

The marina, the Arch boats and Médano Beach deserve their own day (see Day trips) — San José repays a slow first day of plaza, galleries and an early dinner.

Browse GetYourGuide for Art Walk tours, food walks and water days, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

After you land in San José del Cabo: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Viceroy Los Cabos.
Splurge

Viceroy Los Cabos.

Best for the design-resort splurge on the hotel-zone beach — the Nido nest restaurant, five pools and the estuary next door

Sleep in the hotel zone at Paseo Malecón San José Lote 8 — a white-cube resort of reflecting pools whose Nido restaurant sits inside a woven nest above the water, with five pools and the estuary a minute's walk away. Book it for the fullest version of San José polish.

Casa Natalia Boutique Hotel.
Mid-range

Casa Natalia Boutique Hotel.

Best for a boutique base on the main plaza — 18 adults-only rooms, a palm courtyard pool and Mi Cocina downstairs

Stay on Boulevard Mijares 4, right on the main plaza — 18 adults-only rooms around a palm courtyard and pool, Mi Cocina downstairs, the mission a two-minute walk. Book it for a boutique base inside the historic town, not beside it.

Historico casa ceci inn.
Budget

Historico casa ceci inn.

Best for budget beds in the historic centre — a minute from the Art District

Bed down at 22 Ignacio Zaragoza in the historic centre — a small budget inn a minute from the Art District and two from Plaza Mijares; San José's hostels are not on the booking map. Book it for the old-town version of budget Cabo.

Base in the centro for the plaza, galleries and restaurants on foot — the classic first stay. Base in the hotel zone for a beachfront resort, accepting a taxi for every dinner in town. La Playita, east of the estuary, is the quiet marina edge.

Book ahead for December to April, when whale season fills the town. Confirm whether the total carries the 4% lodging tax and 16% IVA, and budget the MXN 488 Embrace It fee on top.

Where to eat first

Baja fish and shrimp tacos on a plate with slaw and grilled lime

Eat Baja first: fish and shrimp tacos, ceviche from the Sea of Cortez, and the farm cooking of the foothills. Three first stops:

La Lupita Taco and Mezcal, Gallery District.

Map → Graze creative tacos and a mezcal flight in a garden courtyard — the natural dinner around a Thursday Art Walk.

Jazmin's Restaurant, centro, near Plaza Mijares.

Map → Eat traditional Mexican plates — chiles rellenos, mole, fresh tortillas — in a plant-filled courtyard near the plaza. Arrive early; it fills with locals at lunch.

Flora Farms, Las Ánimas, in the foothills outside town.

Map → Book the special-occasion table: a working organic farm whose kitchen serves what grows around you. Reserve days ahead in season, and taxi out — it is a short drive, not a walk.

For food tours and cooking classes, browse the San José del Cabo listings on GetYourGuide — the guided food tour through the local market is the tastiest orientation.

Day trips and more

Three days out cover the peninsula from a San José base: the Balandra run, the Corridor's snorkel bays, and — in season — the whales. Carry reef-safe sunscreen; operators supply the rest.

Balandra Bay near La Paz, its turquoise shallows under arid red hills

La Paz, Balandra and Todos Santos

A full day north with hotel pickup in San José: two hours at Balandra's shallow turquoise bay, a swim at Coromuel, lunch and the malecón in La Paz, then Todos Santos and its Hotel California on the way home. Early start — pickups run 3 to 5 am. Rated 4.2 from 94 recent reviews, from about US$98. Check availability →

A snorkeller floating over the clear reef water of a Corridor bay

Kayaking and snorkelling in two pristine bays

Transfer from San José included: launch at Las Viudas, kayak to Santa Maria Bay and snorkel its reef, then paddle on to Chileno Bay for a second snorkel and beach rest. Gear, snacks and photos included. Rated 4.9 from 70 recent reviews, from about US$95. Check availability →

A humpback whale's tail lifting clear of a dark sea under storm cloud

Whale watching with transport and pictures

Three hours in season, roughly December to April: pickup at your San José hotel at no extra cost, then a shaded boat from the Cabo San Lucas marina past the Arch and sea lion colony to the humpbacks, photographer on board and a free re-trip if no whale shows. Rated 4.9 from 196 recent reviews, from about US$97. Check availability →

Leave a spare day for Cabo San Lucas itself — marina, Arch boats and Médano Beach — or the hot springs at Santiago, an hour inland.

When to go and what it costs

The sweep of San José del Cabo's hotel-zone beach and bay from the air at dusk

November to May is the season: dry days around 25 to 30°C, cool evenings, humpbacks offshore December to April and the Art Walk on Thursday evenings. June and July turn hot and humid. August to October is hurricane season — the port closes on storm days and some businesses shut. Prices peak at Christmas and New Year.

San José runs a little gentler than Cabo San Lucas, but Los Cabos is still one of Mexico's pricier corners, often priced in dollars. Anchor in pesos at about MXN 18.7 to US$1 (October 2026). The airport bus is the great leveller at MXN 85 to 110; a taco lunch runs US$8 to 15; a good dinner US$30 to 55.

A backpacker in a dorm, on buses and taco stands: US$50 to 75 a day. Mid-range — a boutique room, a boat day and good dinners: US$160 to 260 a day. A splurge day at a design resort passes US$550.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for desert sun, boat decks and cool winter evenings — the Pacific breeze is real after dark. This is the full list:

Add the San José extras: swim kit in the daypack (most days out end in the water), reef-safe sunscreen, a warm layer for winter evenings, and a dry bag for phones. US and Canadian plugs fit, so no adapter is needed.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

The twin-towered facade of the Misión San José del Cabo Añuití

Spanish runs Baja California Sur, softened by decades of tourism: greet first, and expect patient answers. English is the working language in hotels and galleries; at bus stops and taquerias, a few phrases of Spanish do the heavy lifting.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Buenos díasgood morningGraciasthank you¿Cuánto cuesta?how much does it cost?La cuenta, por favorthe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand nationals enter visa-free for tourism. At SJD the paper FMM card is gone: the officer stamps your passport with the days granted — up to 180, at their discretion, so check the stamp before you walk away. The digital FMMd record is downloadable from the INM portal.

Then pay the state's own charge: the Embrace It fee, MXN 488 in 2026 for foreign visitors over 12 staying more than 24 hours, paid online only at the official portal, never at an airport desk. Keep the QR certificate on your phone.

Safety and health

Swim only where swimming is the point

The hotel-zone beach runs dangerous surf and undertow, and red flags mean it. Swim at Palmilla, La Playita and the protected Corridor bays — Santa Maria and Chileno — and follow flag advice everywhere.

Walk past the airport sales hall without stopping

The gauntlet between customs and the exit is staffed by timeshare sellers posing as transport staff and officials. Your booked driver waits outside with a name board; nobody legitimate needs your signature or card inside that hall.

Take the sun and the heat seriously

Desert sun at 23 degrees north burns fast, and boat days double it: sunscreen before the marina, a hat and water on every outing, and purified water only — hotels supply it free.

Plan August to October around the weather

Hurricane season can close the port, cancel boats and flood arroyos that cut the highway; never drive through running water. Keep the trip flexible on storm days. For anything serious, dial 911.

Frequently asked questions

The short airport ride, the two visitor charges and the two towns, in short.

Fares checked against the Los Cabos airport site and 2026 SJD transfer reporting, October 2026; entry rules against 2026 immigration guidance; Embrace It against the BCS programme's 2026 update; the ISH rate against 2026 state lodging-tax tables.

The Ruta del Desierto bus from outside Terminal 1: about 40 minutes to the centro, MXN 85 to 110 cash. Shared shuttles cost about US$19 a person to San José; official taxis run US$65 to 85 a vehicle and take about 20 minutes.

No — rideshares hold no permit to pick up at SJD, and the app sends you walking off airport property. Uber and DiDi work normally inside town once you are there; ride in by bus, shuttle, taxi or booked transfer.

San José for the historic plaza, mission, Gallery District and Thursday Art Walk — slower, walkable, dinner-led. Cabo San Lucas, 35 km west, for the marina, Arch boats, Médano Beach and nightlife. The Corridor between them is resort strips.

Embrace It is Baja California Sur's levy on foreign visitors: MXN 488 per person in 2026, for over-12s staying more than 24 hours. Pay online only on the official state portal and keep the QR certificate. Hotels separately add 4% lodging tax (ISH) and 16% IVA.

Only the sheltered ones: Palmilla and La Playita near town, and Santa Maria and Chileno on the Corridor. The long hotel-zone beach runs heavy surf and undertow — walk it, sunset on it, but do not swim there, and obey the beach flags everywhere.

November to May: dry, warm and calm, with humpbacks offshore December to April. The Art Walk fills the Gallery District on Thursday evenings, November to June. August to October is hurricane season — hot, humid, with storm days that close the port.

Fares and fees change — the airport counters, the Embrace It portal and your operator always win.
