Tampa: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Tampa International, about 9 miles and 15 minutes from downtown — one of the easiest arrivals in the United States. This guide covers the flat-rate taxi and the US$2 bus in, where to sleep from a waterfront tower to a converted courthouse, the free streetcar, the first Cuban sandwich in the city that invented it, and the park and bay days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Tampa. The airport sits about 9 miles from downtown — the move is the flat US$40 taxi or the US$2 HART bus, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps and ride apps, the free TECO streetcar looping downtown to Ybor City, 13.5% tax on the room, and the days that fill first — Busch Gardens above all — worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Tampa International (TPA), about 9 miles east of downtown One of the easiest US arrivals: a single main terminal, airside shuttles, and the free SkyConnect train to the Rental Car Center and the HART bus stop.
Getting in
Flat-rate taxi US$40, rideshare about US$25 to 30, HART bus US$2, 15 to 45 minutes Taxis and ride apps take about 15 minutes to downtown. The HART Route 30 bus runs down Kennedy Boulevard to Marion Transit Center in about 45 minutes.
Currency
US dollar (USD) cards and phone pay work almost everywhere — Carry small bills for tips. HART buses take exact cash, contactless, or the Flamingo app.
Languages
English, with Spanish widely spoken Ybor City was built by Cuban, Spanish and Italian cigar workers — Menus and tours often run in both languages. The phrases below cover the courtesies.
Time zone
Eastern Time (UTC-5, UTC-4 in daylight saving, mid-March to early November) Tampa keeps US daylight saving, so summer evenings stay light past 8pm — Riverwalk time.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in the United States In hurricane season, Hillsborough County posts alerts and evacuation zones on its own pages; your hotel tracks them too.
Plugs
Type A and B sockets, 120 volts North American plugs fit directly. British and European plugs need an adapter, and most phone chargers handle the voltage.
Tap water
Safe to drink Tampa treats Hillsborough River water to US drinking standards — It tastes of Florida minerals; filtered water at hotels is the pleasanter glass. Refill before beach days.
Tourist tax
13.5% on rooms 6% state transient tax, 1.5% county surtax and 6% Hillsborough tourist development tax — The stack is added on stays of six months or less, as separate lines on the bill. See Sources for a conflicting total in circulation.
Best months
November to April dry, mild and sunny, highs around 21 to 28°C — October is the warm shoulder. June to September is hot, humid and stormy, inside the June to November hurricane season.

Settle in

Touch down at TPA and the first hour is genuinely short: 9 miles to downtown, a posted flat taxi fare, and the free streetcar covering the core once you arrive.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer US trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Times are airport to city centre.

Taxi (Yellow Cab)

Flat rate to downtown and the cruise terminal from the Yellow Cab ranks at Red 1 and Blue 2 outside baggage claim; other trips meter at US$3.50 for the first fifth of a mile plus US$2.85 a mile, with a US$22 airport minimum

US$40 flatabout 15 min

Rideshare (Uber and Lyft)

Pick up at the Red or Blue Express curbsides; Uber's own route pages average US$25 to US$29 to downtown hotels, the airport adds a US$5 service fee, and prices surge on cruise and event days

about US$25 to US$30about 15 min

HART Route 30 bus

From the Rental Car Center stop — ride the free SkyConnect train from the terminal — down Kennedy Boulevard to Marion Transit Center downtown; pay by Flamingo, contactless or exact cash; check the live schedule before you rely on it

Rental car

Every major brand sits in the Rental Car Center, reached by the free SkyConnect train; downtown is about 9 miles east — a car earns its keep for Clearwater, St Petersburg and Busch Gardens days, not for the Riverwalk core

Tampa rewards a simple plan: one paid ride in from TPA, then walk the Riverwalk core and ride the free streetcar between downtown, the Channel District and Ybor City. The rides in from TPA:

Choose the taxi for the posted price and zero thinking; choose the bus with light bags and daylight to spare. The streetcar does the rest of the trip.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep on beach and Busch Gardens days, not downtown.

In town, HART buses cost US$2 a ride, capped at US$4 a day on Flamingo or contactless. The TECO Line Streetcar is free: 2.7 miles and 11 stations from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City, about every 15 minutes.

In the city

Start on the Tampa Riverwalk, the 2.6-mile path along the Hillsborough River: Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and the Tampa Museum of Art at the north end, Sparkman Wharf and the Florida Aquarium at the south. Walk it early or at golden hour.

Ride the free streetcar east to Ybor City, the old cigar capital. Brick 7th Avenue runs past the cigar rollers' social clubs, the Ybor City Museum in the old Ferlita bakery, and the free-roaming chickens descended from factory-yard birds. The Columbia anchors the avenue — eat there below.

Cross the river to the University of Tampa, where Plant Hall's silver minarets — a Moorish grand hotel from 1891 — face downtown. The Henry B. Plant Museum inside keeps the Gilded Age rooms.

End up along Bayshore Boulevard, the long waterfront sidewalk locals claim as the world's longest continuous one, or in Tampa Heights at Armature Works, the restored 1910 streetcar barn turned food hall.

Browse GetYourGuide for city tours and bay days, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Where to eat first

A pressed Cuban sandwich, cut in triangles, with fries alongside

Eat the Cuban sandwich where it was invented: Ybor's cigar workers stacked Spanish ham, Sicilian salami, Cuban roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickle and mustard on crusty Cuban bread, and Tampa still defends the recipe — salami included. Three first stops:

Columbia Restaurant, 2117 East 7th Avenue, Ybor City.

Book Florida's oldest restaurant, founded in 1905 and now covering a whole city block — order the Original Cuban Sandwich and the tableside 1905 Salad. Reserve ahead; it seats 1,700 and still fills.

La Segunda Central Bakery, Ybor City.

Graze the bakery that has baked Tampa's Cuban bread since 1915, its long loaves still made with a palmetto leaf laid on top. Go for a café con leche and a warm guava turnover at the counter.

Armature Works, 1910 North Ola Avenue, Tampa Heights.

Graze the Heights Public Market inside the old streetcar barn — a dozen-plus kitchens around communal tables on the river, from empanadas to Gulf fish.

For food tours of Ybor and downtown, browse the Tampa listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.

When to go and what it costs

Sunset over the Gulf of Mexico off Tampa Bay, orange light on calm water

November to April is the sweet spot: dry air, highs of 21 to 28°C, the Gasparilla pirate season in winter and baseball spring training in March. May and October are warm shoulders with thinner crowds. June to September brings 32°C heat, daily afternoon thunderstorms and the cheapest rooms — inside hurricane season, which runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks from August to October.

Budget in dollars. A HART bus ride is US$2; the streetcar is free; a Cuban sandwich with a 1905 Salad runs about US$22 a person at the Columbia; a mid-range dinner downtown US$35 to 55 before tax and tip.

A backpacker in the value hotels, on bakery breakfasts and buses: US$90 to 120 a day. Mid-range — a courthouse boutique room, a park day, good dinners: US$220 to 300 a day. A splurge day on Water Street with the spa passes US$500.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for sun, sudden rain and serious air conditioning — Tampa is hot outside and cold inside. This is the full list:

Add the Tampa extras: swim kit for Gulf and pool days, a warmer layer for over-air-conditioned restaurants, and reef-safe sunscreen for Shell Key and the beaches.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

The TECO streetcar at Centro Ybor station in Ybor City, Tampa

English runs Tampa, with Spanish woven through its history: Ybor City was founded in 1885 for the cigar trade, and its workers left the city a sandwich and a Latin Quarter. A few Spanish courtesies still open doors:

Buenos díasgood morningGraciasthank you¿Cuánto cuesta?how much does it cost?La cuenta, por favorthe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Most Visa Waiver visitors — the UK, most of the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and others — enter with an ESTA, which costs US$40.62 and covers stays up to 90 days; apply on the official CBP site only, at least 72 hours ahead. Everyone else needs a US visa in advance. US citizens need only their usual ID.

Gasparilla, the pirate festival that takes over Bayshore Boulevard each winter — usually late January — is Tampa's great street party and its busiest hotel weekend. It is a timing fact, not a warning: book early or pick another weekend.

Safety and health

Watch the storm forecasts in season

Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November. Tampa Bay floods by storm surge before it suffers wind: know your hotel's evacuation zone, follow Hillsborough County alerts, and never drive through flooded streets. Summer lightning is the everyday version — when thunder roars, go indoors.

Respect the heat and the sun

Summer afternoons pass 32°C with Gulf humidity and a fierce UV index. Walk the Riverwalk early or late, carry water, and build a shaded or indoor stop into the middle of every day.

Use the streetcar and lit streets after dark

Downtown, Water Street and the Riverwalk stay busy and lit late; Ybor's 7th Avenue is a nightlife strip that gets rowdy after midnight. Ride the free streetcar or an app cab back rather than walking empty side streets.

Swim smart in the Gulf

Lifeguarded beaches fly warning flags — purple means stinging marine life, red means stay out. Shuffle your feet in the shallows against stingrays, give dolphins and manatees their space, and never feed wildlife. For anything serious, dial 911.

Airport transfers against Tampa International Airport's own ground transportation page: the Yellow Cab flat rate of US$40 to downtown and the cruise terminal, the meter at US$3.50 for the first fifth of a mile plus US$2.85 a mile with a US$22 airport minimum, 9 miles to downtown, and the US$5 ride-app fee. Rideshare pricing against Uber's TPA route pages (averages of US$25 to US$29 to downtown hotels). HART fares against HART: US$2 one-way, capped at US$4 a day on Flamingo; the TECO streetcar is fare-free per HART and its own site. One conflict, printed rather than resolved: HART's own pages disagree on Route 30 frequency — every 30 minutes on one, every hour on another — so the table prints neither; check the live schedule. Lodging tax: the Florida Department of Revenue lists Hillsborough's tourist development tax at 6%; with the 6% state tax and 1.5% county surtax the stack totals 13.5%. A second conflict: some secondary guides quote 13% for Tampa Bay rooms — that matches Pinellas County (6% state, 1% surtax, 6% TDT), not Hillsborough; this guide prints the Hillsborough components. ESTA at US$40.62, in force from October 2026. GetYourGuide hub opened and heading-verified as Tampa (tampa-l1187); the Busch Gardens and golf cart product pages were opened and read; the Treasure Island cruise is taken from the opened hub listing because its product page would not render — hub-listed, not page-verified.
