Phuket: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at the top of the island, an hour from everything you came for. This guide covers the transfer and its famously rigid fares, where to sleep from a headland resort to a heritage hotel to a Patong hostel, the Old Town and its Sunday market, a first plate of southern Thai food, and the two boat days — Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay — that sell out first.

The short version

You just landed in Phuket. The airport sits in the far north of the island, so the first decision is the ride south — the Phuket Smart Bus runs the west coast to Patong for a flat ฿100, with a Saily eSIM live for Grab and maps, while a meter taxi to Patong runs ฿800 to ฿1,000 all-in. Sleep in Patong for energy, Kata or Karon for calm water, or Phuket Town for the Old Town — and book the boat days that sell out first, Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay, ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Phuket International (HKT), in the north of the island The airport sits above Nai Yang beach, about 45 km by road from Patong — budget an hour to the west-coast beaches.
Getting in
Smart Bus ฿100, minibus about ฿200, taxi ฿800 to ฿1,000 to Patong The Phuket Smart Bus runs the west coast for a flat ฿100; meter taxis add a ฿100 airport surcharge on top of the meter.
Currency
Thai baht (฿) Beach towns still run on cash — and Thai ATMs charge foreign cards ฿220 to ฿250 per withdrawal, so take out a decent amount at once.
Languages
Thai English is widely spoken in Patong, Kata and the Old Town; it thins out in local markets.
Time zone
ICT (UTC+7), no daylight saving Thailand stays on one time all year; sunset falls between about 18:00 and 18:45.
Emergency
Tourist police 1155, police 191, ambulance 1669 1155 is the tourist police line and the best first call for visitors.
Plugs
Type A, B, C and O, 220V Most sockets take flat and round pins; UK travellers need an adapter.
Tap water
Do not drink it Use bottled water or the coin refill stations in every beach town; restaurant ice is factory-made and safe.
Tourist tax
None Thailand levies no per-night hotel tax in Phuket; quoted rates usually include 7% VAT, and some hotels add a 10% service charge on top.
Best months
November to April Dry season brings calm, swimmable west-coast seas; the monsoon runs roughly May to October, with red-flag days.

Settle in

Land at HKT and accept the geography first: the airport tops the island and everything you came for is an hour south. Clear immigration with your TDAC ready, grab cash, and pick your ride early.

Set up your data before you leave the terminal: a Yesim eSIM loads a Thailand plan in minutes, so Grab, maps and the bus timetable work from the kerb. For a longer Thailand trip, compare Saily and Airalo.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

Choose the base that matches the trip: Patong for nightlife and first-timer energy, Kata and Karon for calmer water and families, Phuket Town for food, character and cheaper rooms. Island traffic makes moving hotels mid-stay rarely worth it.

If a delayed flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

The carved bow of a longtail boat at the water's edge in Phuket

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

In a hurry? Taxi or Grab is the fastest option listed, at about 60 min.

Watching the budget? Phuket Smart Bus is the cheapest option listed, at ฿100 flat.

Heavy bags, a group, or a late arrival? Taxi or Grab takes you door to door — ฿800 to ฿1,000 to Patong, about 60 min.

Phuket Smart Bus

Runs from the airport down the west coast through Patong and Karon to Kata and Rawai roughly hourly through the day and evening; tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard, scan the QR or pay cash on board; stops are fixed points, not hotel doors

Price฿100 flatJourneyabout 90 min to Patong

Airport bus (8411) to Phuket Town

The 8411 airport bus is the right ride for Old Town stays, ending at Phuket Town bus terminal; from there the beaches are a songthaew or Grab ride away, which is why beach-bound travellers take the Smart Bus instead

Price฿100Journeyabout 70 min

Shared minibus

Counters in arrivals sell seats to Patong, Karon and Kata; vans leave when full and drop at hotels in order, so the last drop can add half an hour — the sweet spot for solo travellers who want the hotel door

Priceabout ฿200 per personJourneyabout 75 min

Taxi or Grab

Meter taxis add a fixed ฿100 airport surcharge to the meter; Grab is the only app with an official terminal pickup (about ฿750 to ฿950 to Patong) and quotes before you ride; Bolt is cheaper in town but cannot pick up inside the airport

Price฿800 to ฿1,000 to PatongJourneyabout 60 min

The international terminal at Phuket International Airport, seen across the airfield

Phuket International sits in the island's north, above Nai Yang, and there is no train — every arrival funnels onto one main road south. The beaches string down the west coast: Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, then Rawai, with Phuket Town inland to the east. The airport rides are these:

Phuket's transport is the island's one real friction. Taxi and tuk-tuk pricing is famously rigid — set fares by zone, little haggling in the beach towns — so agree every price before you get in; a short Patong tuk-tuk hop costs more than the same ride in Bangkok. Grab is the honest workaround, and the only app with an official airport pickup zone; Bolt is a little cheaper around the island but cannot pick up inside the terminal. Blue songthaews link Phuket Town to the beaches for small fares, slowly, and stop early evening.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Renting a car or scooter only pays off if you know Thai roads; if you drive, price the pickup on AutoEurope first, and never hand over your passport as a deposit.

In the city

Start in the Old Town, not on the sand. Thalang Road holds the island's Sino-Portuguese shophouses — pastel facades, arched walkways, gold shops and shrines — and on Sundays from about 16:00 the Lard Yai walking-street market fills the closed road with food stalls and buskers. Come hungry, stay for the evening light.

Ride up to the Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill. The 45-metre white-marble statue reopened on 3 March 2026 after the closure that followed the August 2024 landslide, now in a smaller fenced site run by Wat Kata: open daily about 09:00 to 18:00, free, shoulders and knees covered, sarongs lent at the gate. Pair it with Wat Chalong, the island's most important temple, at the foot of the hill — and check the day's status after heavy rain.

Give one afternoon to the beaches properly: swim at Kata in the morning calm, walk the Karon viewpoint for the three-bay postcard, and watch the sun drop from Promthep Cape.

Book the headline days before you arrive — browse the Phuket listings on GetYourGuide for the island days, and compare Klook for attraction tickets.

End a Patong evening on Bangla Road at least once, if only as anthropology.

Where to stay your first nights

Amari Phuket.
Splurge

Amari Phuket.

Best for a resort splurge at the quiet end of Patong Beach

A resort on its own headland at the quiet southern end of Patong Beach, at 2 Muen-Ngern Road: 183 rooms, suites and ocean villas, two pools, a jetty for snorkelling at low tide, and the Breeze Spa. Patong's restaurants sit five minutes away; none of its noise reaches you at night.

The Memory at On On Hotel.
Mid-range

The Memory at On On Hotel.

Best for heritage character in Phuket Old Town

Phuket Town's grand old lady at 19 Phang Nga Road — a 1929 Sino-Portuguese hotel with a cool atrium, antique-lined corridors and a small pool, famous far beyond the island from a scene in The Beach. Old Town cafés and the Sunday market are on the doorstep.

Lub d Phuket Patong.
Budget

Lub d Phuket Patong.

Best for budget beds and an easy social scene in Patong

A big, well-run hostel-hotel on Sawatdirak Road in Patong, minutes from the beach and Bangla Road: pod-style dorms and private rooms, a pool, coworking space and a bar that does the socialising for you. The best budget beds in Patong for solo travellers.

Base by beach, because in Phuket the beach is the neighbourhood. Patong is loud, central and walkable; Kata and Karon are the swimmable, family-friendly middle; Phuket Town is the character pick, a short ride from the sand.

Book any of the three early for December and January. In monsoon months, west-coast rooms discount hard.

Where to eat first

A bowl of tom yum soup with prawns, served with rice

Eat southern on day one. Phuket is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and its kitchen runs hotter than the pad thai circuit: tom yum with river prawns, gaeng som sour curry, moo hong braised pork, and Hokkien noodles from the Chinese community that built the Old Town. Market seafood is sold by weight — agree the price first. Three first stops:

Tu Kab Khao.

Map → A beloved Old Town dining room on Phang Nga Road, in a shophouse full of family photographs. Order the moo hong and the crab curry; locals book ahead, and so should you.

One Chun Cafe n Restaurant.

Map → Old Town cooking at honest prices on Thepkrasattri Road — southern curries, stir-fried crab and a queue of local families at lunch. Arrive before 12:00 or wait.

Rawai seafood market.

Map → At the island's south end, buy fish, prawns and shellfish from the sea-gypsy stalls, then carry it across the road and pay a restaurant the cooking fee. Lunch here pairs with a Promthep Cape sunset.

Day trips and more

Two seas frame Phuket: the open Andaman for Phi Phi, and sheltered Phang Nga Bay for the limestone islands. Both run as full hotel-pickup days — carry a dry bag and small notes for park fees where they are not included.

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh, white sand under limestone cliffs

Phuket

Eight hours by speedboat: a walk on Maya Bay itself (the sand yes, swimming no — the bay is a protected nursery), Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave and Monkey Beach, buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don, then snorkelling and an hour and a half on Bamboo Island. Rated 4.6 from about 21,800 reviews. Check availability →

James Bond Island, the Ko Tapu pinnacle in Phang Nga Bay

Phuket

A speedboat day from Boat Lagoon Pier: Yao Yai's Palm Beach Club, Panak Island's caves, canoeing the Hong Island lagoons, buffet lunch at Panyee floating village, James Bond Island, and a last swim at Naka Island. Rated 4.8 from about 2,700 reviews. Check availability →

Limestone islands rising from the calm water of Phang Nga Bay

James Bond, Phang Nga Bay and Hong Island Tour from Phuket

Choose speedboat or big boat from Ao Por Pier: the big boat is the relaxed version, with a buffet on board, canoeing at Panak and Hong, time on James Bond Island, and a swim stop to finish. The pick for families. Check availability →

When to go and what it costs

Sunset over the Andaman Sea from a Phuket west-coast beach

November to April is the season: dry trade winds, calm west-coast water, boats running to every island. December and January are the peak — book rooms and boat days ahead. From about May to October the south-west monsoon turns the west coast rough: red flags fly, speedboats cancel, and room rates fall by a third or more. In a monsoon-season stay, plan island days early, while you still have spare days to move them to.

A backpacker in a Lub d dorm, on market food and the Smart Bus: ฿1,200 to ฿1,800 a day. Mid-range — a good hotel, seafood dinners, one boat day: ฿4,000 to ฿6,000 a day. A splurge day with a headland resort and a private boat passes ฿15,000.

Count the quiet costs too: ฿220 to ฿250 per foreign-card ATM withdrawal, national park fees on some island trips, and the Phuket taxi premium on every unplanned hop. Walking your beach town and riding the Smart Bus keeps all three small.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for heat, downpours and boats — a Phuket day runs from beach to temple to speedboat. This is the full list:

Add the Phuket extras: a dry bag for boat days, reef-safe sunscreen for island trips, and a light cover-up in the daypack for temples and the Big Buddha. Strapped sandals beat flip-flops on wet boat decks.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

Sino-Portuguese shophouses on a Phuket Old Town street at dusk

Thailand changed the deal in 2026, so older advice is wrong. Since 15 September 2026 the visa exemption gives most visitors — US, UK, EU, Australian and about 60 nationalities in all — 30 days, not 60. One 30-day extension is usually available at immigration for ฿1,900. Check your nationality is still on the list before booking anything non-refundable, and keep six months on your passport.

The second change is the TDAC — the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. Every foreign arrival must file it online, free, within 72 hours before landing, at the official immigration site (tdac.immigration.go.th). It replaced the paper TM6 card; the QR confirmation is checked at the counter, and airlines may ask for it at check-in. Beware lookalike sites charging for the free form. Immigration can also ask for an onward ticket and proof of funds — have both on your phone.

Thai first impressions are easy: the wai greeting palms together, slight bow, a smile, and never a raised voice. Dress covered at temples, and never point your feet at a Buddha image. Four phrases do most of the work:

Sawadee khrap / khahelloKhop khunthank youTao raihow muchCheck binthe bill, please

Safety and health

Never swim against a red flag

From about May to October the monsoon builds real surf, and rip currents at Karon, Kata and Surin drown strong swimmers every year. Red flags mean no swimming, full stop; swim between the yellow flags where lifeguards patrol, and treat unpatrolled beaches as look-only.

Agree every fare before the ride

Phuket's set-fare culture is legal, organised and unbending — the trap is climbing into a tuk-tuk with no price settled, then meeting the fare chart at the other end. Use Grab for a quoted price, and never surrender your passport to a rental shop as a deposit — a cash deposit and photos of the vehicle protect you.

Respect the water on boat days

Speedboats to Phi Phi cross open sea and bounce hard in monsoon swell; sit toward the back if your stomach is fragile, skip the trip in pregnancy, and listen when a captain cancels. Life jackets are on board; wear yours on the crossings.

Scooters are the island's biggest injury risk

Phuket's hills, sand on corners and loose helmet culture fill its clinics with tourists every week. Ride only if you are licensed and experienced at home, wear the helmet, photograph the bike at pickup, and check your insurance actually covers riding.

Phuket questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The things travellers ask in the first 48 hours: the hour-long airport run, the 30-day rule, and which beach to sleep on.

Entry rules against Thai immigration and consular guidance, October 2026; fares against Phuket Smart Bus, Phuket 101 and 2026 transfer reporting.

The Smart Bus is the bargain: a flat ฿100 from the airport along the west coast to Patong in about 90 minutes, by card or cash. Shared minibuses cost about ฿200 and drop at your hotel. A meter taxi runs ฿700 to ฿900 plus the ฿100 surcharge; Grab quotes about ฿750 to ฿950; both take about an hour.

Since 15 September 2026 the visa exemption gives 30 days, not 60, to visitors from about 60 countries including the US, UK and EU. Every foreign arrival must also file the free TDAC digital arrival card online within 72 hours before landing. One 30-day extension is usually available at immigration for ฿1,900.

Patong for nightlife, walkability and first-timer energy. Kata and Karon for calmer, more swimmable beaches and families. Phuket Town for Old Town character, the best local food and cheaper rooms, with beaches a day trip away.

Yes. The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill fully reopened on 3 March 2026 after the closure following the August 2024 landslide. It now runs as a smaller fenced site under Wat Kata, open daily about 09:00 to 18:00, entry free. Cover shoulders and knees — sarongs are lent at the gate.

The monsoon runs roughly May to October, and on red-flag days the west-coast beaches are genuinely dangerous — rip currents at Karon, Kata and Surin drown swimmers every year. Swim only between the flags at patrolled beaches, and expect Phi Phi speedboats to cancel in rough weather; sheltered Phang Nga Bay trips run more often.

Beach-town taxis and tuk-tuks work to set zone fares with meters rarely used, so short hops cost far more than in Bangkok. The workarounds: Grab quotes before you ride, Bolt is cheaper in town, the Smart Bus is ฿100 — and whatever you ride, agree the fare first.

Fares change — the Smart Bus and airport pages always win.
