You have just landed at Kahului (OGG), in the green corridor between Maui's two volcanoes — the island splits three ways from the terminal: south to Kihei and Wailea, west to Kaanapali, east towards Hana. This guide covers the shuttle, taxi and rental maths for both resort coasts, the stacked taxes that lift a room rate by nearly a fifth, where to sleep from a Wailea landmark to a harbour-side classic, a first plate lunch and the definitive shave ice, and the two days to book before anything else — Haleakala sunrise and the Hana Highway.

You just landed in Maui. The move from Kahului Airport is a rental car or a booked shuttle — about 25 minutes to Kihei, 50 to Kaanapali — with an eSIM keeping maps and messages live from the arrivals hall, a room total that quietly carries about 18.7% in stacked Hawaii taxes, and the two days that sell out first — Haleakala sunrise and the Road to Hana — worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts
Airport
Kahului Airport (OGG), on the north shore of Maui's central isthmus Almost every flight lands here. Kapalua (JHM) and Hana (HNM) take small interisland planes.
Getting in
Rental car, shuttle or taxi from OGG about 25 minutes to Kihei, 50 to Kaanapali — Book shuttles before you fly. Every rental brand sits in one facility, a free tram ride from baggage claim.
Currency
The US dollar (USD) cards and contactless almost everywhere — Carry small cash for farm stands along the Hana Highway, where the signal dies.
Languages
English runs the island; Hawaiian is the co-official language Place names are Hawaiian and worth learning to say — a mahalo goes a long way here.
Time zone
Hawaii Standard Time (UTC−10) all year there is no daylight saving — The gap to the US West Coast is three hours in summer, two in winter.
Emergency
911 for police, ambulance and fire Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku is the island's main hospital, ten minutes from the airport.
Plugs
Type A and B sockets, 120 volts the same as the mainland United States — Visitors from Europe, the UK and Australia need a plug adapter.
Tap water
Safe to drink county water from mountain aquifers — Refill your bottle instead of buying single-use plastic.
Tourist tax
About 18.7% lands on a Maui room state, county and excise taxes stacked — 11% state transient accommodations tax, 3% Maui County tax and the general excise tax passed through. Resort fees are taxed too.
Best months
April to May and September to November for warm seas and thinner crowds Humpbacks fill the channels December to April; winter north shore surf is expert territory.
Map
Find your arrival stop, hotel, and first meal. Stays, sights, and landmarks in Maui — live hotel prices plus the key places from this guide.
Land at Kahului and walk out into the trade winds — the island starts the moment the terminal doors slide open. Both resort coasts run from here: south to Kihei and Wailea, west to Kaanapali.
Set up your data before you leave the terminal. Arriving from overseas, an Airalo eSIM loads a US data plan in minutes, so maps and messaging work from the arrivals hall. Comparing plans for a longer US trip, check Saily and Yesim as the alternatives.
Run the arrival checklist in this order:
Collect the rental car or meet your shuttle first — the tram leaves from directly across from baggage claim
Download the offline Maui map while you still have signal: the Hana and Haleakala roads run through dead zones
Drop your bags, then swim — the first afternoon is for the water
Check the tax line when the hotel confirms your rate. Maui rooms carry about 18.7% in stacked taxes, and resort fees are taxed on top — the first quote rarely shows the real total.
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes before you write the day off.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
SpeediShuttle shared shuttle
Book online before you fly; shared vans group riders by resort coast, so the last drop can add 20 minutes; Roberts Hawaii also keeps a walk-up shuttle counter in baggage claim
PriceAbout $30 to $60 per adult one wayJourneyabout 30 to 60 min
Taxi from the airport rank
Guide fares are posted at the airport rank; meters run about $3.00 a mile; Kapalua runs about $105; rideshare pickups work the same kerb
Price$33 to $55 Kihei, $57 Wailea, $87 KaanapaliJourneyabout 25 to 55 min
Maui Bus
Routes 35 and 40 stop at the airport every 90 minutes; one carry-on only, maximum 22 by 14 by 9 inches — checked bags are not carried; change at Queen Kaahumanu Center for Kihei and West Maui routes
Price$2 per boarding; $4 day passJourneyabout 1 to 2 hrs
Rental car from OGG
Free electric tram from baggage claim to the consolidated rental facility; the Hana and Haleakala days need a car; resort parking fees run on top of the rate
PriceVaries by season — book earlyJourneyabout 5 min to the facility
Maui runs on the rental car. Two-lane highways link the airport to the resort coasts, and the headline days — Hana, Haleakala — are drives, not bus rides. Maui Bus is real but slow: airport routes run every 90 minutes, with a one-carry-on rule. The airport rides are these:
Choose the shuttle or taxi when you land wrung out. Choose the rental when your days run beyond the resort strip, because on Maui they almost always do.
Compare a pre-booked transfer when the hour or group maths demands it — a Kiwitaxi transfer or Welcome Pickups puts a driver in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving, price the Kahului pickup on AutoEurope first.
In the city
Swim at Kaanapali first, while the morning water is glassy. The three-mile beach runs north from Black Rock past the resort row, the trades hold off until midday, and the beach path puts coffee, rentals and lunch within a barefoot walk.
Snorkel the north end at Black Rock. Turtles graze the reef below the lava point most mornings — give them space, watch from a few metres back, and be out before the afternoon wind chops the surface.
Walk the Wailea beach path at sunset. The paved trail strings five crescent beaches together past the resorts, and the light does the rest — the easiest first-evening plan on the island.
Detour to Paia for the small-town version of Maui. The old plantation town mixes surf shops and fish tacos, and doubles as the last fuel stop before the Hana Highway.
Book the headline days before you arrive: sunrise reservations, Hana tours and Molokini boats all sell out in season — browse the Maui listings on GetYourGuide for the big days, and compare Klook when you are stacking activities into one pass.
After you land in Maui: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort.
Best for the Wailea landmark splurge — river pools, gardens and the beach in one 40-acre resort
Stay at 3850 Wailea Alanui Drive, in the 40-acre garden resort on Wailea Beach. Expect river pools with slides and a swim-up grotto bar, the Kilolani Spa and Nobu — book it for the landmark Wailea trip.
Best for the classic Kaanapali mid-range — beachfront gardens, the whale-shaped pool and daily cultural programming
Sleep at 2525 Kaanapali Parkway, on 11 garden acres mid-beach. Expect the whale-shaped pool, a cultural centre with daily Hawaiian programming and Black Rock a short walk north — book it for the classic Kaanapali base.
Best for budget first and last nights — Kahului Harbor, a garden pool and a free airport shuttle
Bed down at 100 W Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului, on the harbour ten minutes from the airport. Expect 183 rooms around a garden pool and a free airport shuttle — book it for late arrivals and honest value.
Pick a coast first. West Maui — Kaanapali and Kapalua — is the classic resort strip, beach path and Whalers Village at its centre. South Maui splits between laid-back Kihei condos and Wailea's resort row. Kahului is the practical airport-side base.
Book any of the three early for Christmas, spring break and whale-season weekends. Confirm the quoted total includes the 18.7% tax stack and any resort fee.
Where to eat first
Eat close on day one — a chef's counter by the airport, the island's most-booked dining room and the definitive shave ice. Three first stops:
Tin Roof, 360 Papa Place, Kahului.
Order the mochiko chicken and garlic noodles at chef Sheldon Simeon's counter, ten minutes from baggage claim — the line moves fast.
Mama's Fish House, 799 Poho Place, Paia.
Book this one weeks ahead. The beachfront dining room prints the fisherman's name next to the fish — the splurge dinner Maui plans trips around.
Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice.
Finish with the island's benchmark shave ice: three syrups in stripes over powder-fine ice, snow cap on top. Shops sit on both coasts.
Save room on the Hana day for warm banana bread from the Keanae roadside stalls. For food tours and evening experiences, browse the Maui listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.
Day trips and more
Three escapes define a Maui week: the jungle highway to Hana, the volcano sunrise and the crater-island snorkel boat. Two need reservations or early booking — sort them before the beach days fill up.
The Road to Hana
Drive about 64 miles from Kahului on a highway of some 600 curves and 59 one-lane bridges to Hana town. Start by seven, fuel up in Paia, and book Wai'anapanapa State Park ahead — non-residents need a reservation, $5 entry plus $10 parking, for the black-sand beach. A small-group tour hands the wheel to a driver who knows every turnout. Check availability →
Haleakala sunrise
Ride up in the dark to watch the sun lift out of a sea of cloud over the crater's cinder cones. Entry between 3:00 and 7:00 a.m. needs a $1 vehicle reservation on recreation.gov on top of the $30 three-day park pass; the summit is below freezing before dawn, and the same pass covers Kipahulu, at the end of the Hana road. Sunset needs no reservation. Check availability →
Molokini and Turtle Town
Sail from Maalaea Harbor at first light to the crescent crater offshore, where the water runs aquarium-clear, then snorkel a second site where green sea turtles graze. Morning boats get the calm water, and breakfast and lunch ride along. Check availability →
When to go and what it costs
Come in April to May or September to November for the full deck at half the pressure: warm seas, working waterfalls, every boat running, and no whale-season premium on rooms.
Come in winter for the whales. Humpbacks fill the Auau Channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai from December to April, peaking January to March — watch blows and breaches from the Kaanapali beach path. The same months bring big north-shore surf and the windward coast's heaviest rain.
Come in summer knowing the trade: the warmest water and the school-holiday crush. Book beds, boats and the sunrise well ahead, and start every day early.
Budget Maui by the fixed costs, not by the headline. The shuttle runs about $30 to $60 per adult, the taxi to Kaanapali about $87, the Haleakala pass $30 for three days plus $1 for the sunrise reservation, Wai'anapanapa $5 plus $10 to park, and a Maui Bus ride $2.
Stack the tax maths early: at 18.7%, a week at $300 a night adds roughly $390 in taxes before any resort fee — compare properties on the final number.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for two climates: beach heat at sea level, near-freezing wind on the summit. This is the full list:
Add the Maui layer on top of the list: reef-safe sunscreen only — Hawaii law keeps oxybenzone and octinoxate sunscreens off the shelves, so bring a mineral zinc formula — plus a warm jacket and hat for the Haleakala sunrise, aqua shoes for rocky entries and a dry bag for boat days.
Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly
English runs everything on Maui, and Hawaiian runs underneath it — in place names, street signs and everyday words. Learn a handful and the island opens up a little.
Four phrases do most of the work:
AlohahelloMahalothank youE kala maiexcuse meA hui houuntil we meet again
Sort your paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Maui is a domestic US destination: US citizens fly in on a passport or a REAL ID-compliant licence, required at federal checkpoints since May 2025. Everyone else enters under US rules at their first US airport — no separate Hawaii process.
Know which document your passport actually needs. Visa Waiver Program travellers need an ESTA before boarding: it costs $40.62, applies online through US Customs and Border Protection, and lasts two years. Apply at least 72 hours ahead, only on the official site — resellers charge multiples for the same form. Other nationals need a US visitor visa instead.
Declare the farm produce. Hawaii protects its agriculture fiercely: fresh fruit, plants and some foods must be declared on the state agriculture form — many airlines offer it digitally before landing — and bags are screened on the way out too.
Safety and health
Swim where the lifeguards are, and respect the shore break
Maui posts the rule at every beach park: if in doubt, don't go out. The shore break at Makena's Big Beach injures swimmers every year, winter north shore surf is expert-only, and turtles and monk seals on the sand are resting, not posing.
Take the sun and the trades seriously
The breeze hides the burn at this latitude, and dehydration sneaks up inside an hour. Reef-safe sunscreen before the beach, reapplied after every swim, water in the daypack — the summit sun at Haleakala is fiercer still.
Drive the Hana Highway like a guest
Pull fully over for local drivers, never stop on a one-lane bridge for a photo, and turn back if streams run brown after rain — flash floods close the road. The drive home in the dark, on a wet jungle road, is the mistake to design out.
Give wildlife its space and heed every closure
Green sea turtles are protected: view them from at least 10 feet away, monk seals from at least 50. Parts of Lahaina remain a recovery zone — stay out of marked and fenced areas, and keep off private land at Hana stops.
The things travellers ask in the first 48 hours: the rental-car question, the tax stack and the two reservations that gate the big days.
Transfer fares against the Kahului Airport taxi guide, SpeediShuttle and Maui Bus October 2026; taxes against Hawaii Department of Taxation Announcement 2025-03 and Act 96; park rules against the National Park Service, recreation.gov and Hawaii State Parks.
A taxi from the rank runs to the posted guide fare of about $87 and takes about 50 minutes. A pre-booked SpeediShuttle shared van costs about $60 per adult, door to door. The rental car is the flexible default — a free tram from baggage claim reaches every brand.
For most trips, yes. The resort strips are walkable, but Hana, Haleakala and the upcountry towns are drives, and Maui Bus is slow — airport routes run every 90 minutes and allow one carry-on. Car-free works if you base on one beach and tour the big days.
About 18.7%: the 11% state transient accommodations tax (raised from 10.25% on 1 January 2026 by the Green Fee law), the 3% Maui County tax and the excise tax passed on at up to 4.712%. Resort fees are taxed too — compare properties on the final total.
Yes. Entering the summit district between 3:00 and 7:00 in the morning needs a $1 vehicle reservation on recreation.gov, released 60 days out with a second batch two days ahead, on top of the $30 three-day park pass, which also covers the Kipahulu district. Sunset needs no reservation.
The park needs booking first: non-residents reserve entry ($5 per person) and parking ($10 per vehicle) up to 30 days ahead, with no same-day reservations. The bay has strong currents and no lifeguard, so most visitors wade, explore the sea caves and save the real swim for a calmer beach.
Humpbacks winter in the Auau Channel between Maui, Lanai and Molokai from December to April, peaking January to March. Watch from the Kaanapali beach path at breakfast, or take a morning boat from Maalaea — the water is calmest early.
Fares change — the operators, the National Park Service and Hawaii State Parks pages always win.
