You have just landed in Geneva, bound for Annecy — Annecy's own airport takes no scheduled flights, so the last 40 kilometres from Geneva Airport, by direct coach, Léman Express train or the A41 motorway, are part of the trip. This guide covers the transfer maths, where to sleep from a 1913 lakeside palace to a family-run house by the station, a first fondue in the old town lanes, the castle, canyon and paragliding days around the lake, and the taxe de séjour that quietly adds to every room bill.

You just landed in Annecy. You actually touched down at Geneva — the move is the direct airport coach, about 50 minutes and from about €12 to the bus station beside Annecy station, with a France eSIM live before you board, a bed in the old town or on the lakefront, and the days that sell out first — the Forclaz paragliding launch above all — worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.
Quick facts
Airport
Annecy has no airport for scheduled flights Geneva (GVA) is the gateway, about 40 km north in Switzerland — Annecy's own airport handles private and business flights only. Lyon (LYS) is the second gateway, at about two hours by train or coach.
Getting in
Direct coach from Geneva Airport, about 50 minutes, from about €12 FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus drop you at Annecy bus station, beside the station. Trains take about 1 hour 30 minutes with a change at Geneva Cornavin.
Currency
The euro (EUR) in Annecy but you land in Swiss franc territory — Geneva Airport prices in francs; many airport shops take euros but hand back change in francs. Cards and contactless work almost everywhere once you cross into France.
Languages
French runs the town; English is widely understood in hotels and tourism A few French phrases go a long way — the chips in the language section cover the essentials.
Time zone
Central European Time CET (UTC+1), switching to CEST (UTC+2) from late March to late October — Geneva keeps the same clock, so the transfer never changes your time zone.
Emergency
112 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in France Dial 15 for SAMU medical help, 17 for police and 18 for the fire brigade. The 112 number also works in Switzerland.
Plugs
Type C and E sockets, 230 volts The two-pin Europlug also fits Swiss sockets, so one plug serves the whole trip. Three-pin plugs need an adapter.
Tap water
Safe to drink, and famously good The lake is often called one of the purest in Europe. Refill your bottle instead of buying water.
Tourist tax
Charged per adult per night on top of the room rate a four-star palace hotel currently lists €2.60 — The taxe de séjour scales with the property's star rating, so simpler stays charge less. Under-18s are exempt; the tax is usually settled at the hotel.
Best months
June to September for the lake; December to February for the ski areas above town La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand sit about 35 minutes away by road. The Fête du Lac fireworks light up the bay on the first Saturday of August.
Map

Land at Geneva and treat the crossing as stage one. The coach drops you at Annecy bus station, the train at the station next door, and the old town's canals start a two-minute walk from either, whichever you arrive on.
Set up your data before you leave the terminal: a France plan on an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so coach times, maps and the walk to your hotel work from the arrivals hall. Comparing plans for a longer France trip, check Saily and Yesim as the alternatives.
Run the arrival checklist in this order:
Book the Geneva to Annecy coach before you fly — about 50 minutes, from about €12
Keep your passport in your hand luggage — the coach crosses from Switzerland into France, and spot checks do happen
Drop your bags at the hotel, then walk the old town canals end to end to get your bearings before dinner
Check the tax line when the hotel quotes your rate: the taxe de séjour lands on top, scaled to the property's star rating, so the first quote is rarely the final number.
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes before you write the day off.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
Direct airport coach
FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus run the route; book ahead in July and August, when seats sell out; the bus station sits two minutes from the old town edge

No direct train leaves the airport — the seven-minute hop to Geneva Cornavin and the change there are the whole trick

Annecy itself runs on foot. The old town, the station and the lakefront sit inside a 15-minute triangle, Sibra city buses cover the suburbs at about €1.60 a ride from the driver, and Vélonecy share bikes wait at docks around the centre. The airport rides from Geneva are these:
Choose the coach when you land tired — direct, cheap, and two minutes from the old town. Choose the train with a rail pass, or when you are travelling on into the Alps.
Compare a pre-booked transfer when the maths demands it — a Kiwitaxi transfer or Welcome Pickups puts a driver in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the Geneva pickup on AutoEurope first.
In the city
Start at the Palais de l'Isle, the turreted former prison in the Thiou canal — it is the town's postcard shot, and the small museum inside covers Annecy's story. Go early in the day, before the day-trip crowds fill the quays and the cafés.
Climb to the Château d'Annecy afterwards. The counts of Annecy's castle above the old town now holds the regional museum — alpine lake displays, contemporary art and the best view over the rooftops to the water.
Walk the Jardins de l'Europe and cross the Pont des Amours to the lake. The gardens roll from the town hall to the shore, swans patrol the canal mouth, and the Pâquier lawn is where the town spreads its picnic blankets.
Swim when the season allows: Plage d'Albigny and Plage des Marquisats are the town beaches, a short ride or a 20-minute lakeside walk from the centre, with supervised swimming in high summer.
Book the headline days before you arrive, because the lake sells out first. Paragliding slots, canyoning groups and the best-reviewed tours all go early in summer — browse the Annecy listings on GetYourGuide for the lake days, and compare Klook when you are stacking activities into one pass.
Time a morning for the old town market — the stalls fill the lanes around Quai de l'Évêché on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, and the cafés along the Thiou take over once they pack away.
After you land in Annecy: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
L'Impérial Palace.
Best for the 1913 lakeside palace splurge, with the Cristal Spa, the casino and a park running down to the water
Stay on Allée de l'Impérial, in the 1913 palace standing in its own park at the lake's edge, about a 15-minute lakeside walk from the old town. Expect 104 rooms, the Cristal Spa, a casino, a gastronomic restaurant and gardens running down to the water — book it for a landmark trip.
Best for calm four-star rooms between the station and the lake
Sleep at 27 Rue Sommeiller, a few minutes' walk from the station and 250 metres from the lake. Expect a calm four-star with modern rooms and one of the quietest bases this close to the centre — book it for polish without the palace price.
Best for a family-run budget base near the station, with 32 simple rooms
Bed down at 12 Rue de la Poste, a family-run house near the station and about a 10-minute walk from the lake. Expect 32 simple rooms, a warm welcome and rates that leave money for fondue — book early for summer weekends.
Stay in the old town for a first visit — the lanes put dinner, the market and the canals on your doorstep. Choose the lakefront east of the centre for the palace splurge and the beaches, and the station streets for lower rates.
Book any of the three early for July, August and the Fête du Lac fireworks weekend. Confirm whether the quoted total includes the taxe de séjour, charged per adult per night on top of the rate.
Where to eat first
Eat close on day one — this is Savoy, and the first meal should involve cheese. Three first stops:
Le Freti, 12 Rue Sainte-Claire.
Sit down for the cheese specialities the town runs on — fondue, raclette and tartiflette in a lively room on the arcaded main lane. Book ahead in high season.
Brasserie des Européens, 4 Esplanade de l'Hôtel de Ville.
Order oysters, escargots and lobster from the terrace facing the town hall gardens. It is the easiest first-night table between the old town and the lake.
Ô Savoyard, 1 Rue Perrière.
Start the next day here instead: a rustic room overlooking the Thiou pouring out tartiflette, fondue and baked trout, with farmhouse clutter on every shelf.
Save room for a market picnic. On Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings the stalls sell tomme, reblochon and saucisson — carry a bag down to the Pâquier lawn and eat facing the water. For food tours and evening experiences, browse the Annecy listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.
Day trips and more
Three escapes run down the lake's eastern shore to Talloires, about 25 minutes away: a fairytale castle, a canyon you descend on ropes, and the launch meadow every paraglider talks about. Carry water and a layer for all three — the shore villages keep mountain weather.
Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard castle
Ride the lake road to Talloires for a guided walk through the village Cézanne painted, then climb to the castle — home to the same family for over a thousand years and said to have inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. The trip runs about five hours in a small group; castle entry is €12 per adult, paid on site. Check availability →
Angon canyon
Wade, slide and abseil down the Angon gorge with a certified guide, finishing with a 35-metre abseil under the waterfall. The descent takes four to five hours, and all equipment is provided. Check availability →
Col de la Forclaz
Launch from the Forclaz col high above Talloires on a tandem flight of about 15 minutes, the lake opening out below you as you leave the meadow. Flights run from age five, and you land back near the shore for a refreshment at La Ferme restaurant. Check availability →
Leave a spare day for Chamonix if Mont Blanc calls — about an hour by car or coach, and best done as its own expedition, not squeezed between swims.
When to go and what it costs
Come in June to September for the full deck: the lake warm enough to swim, every beach supervised, and the old town market at its richest. July and August bring the thickest crowds — the Fête du Lac fireworks on the first Saturday of August draw the whole region to the bay, so book beds and coaches weeks ahead.
Come in May, June or September for the calmer version — the cafés and lake days without the queues, and shoulder-season room rates.
Come in winter for the double life. December to February swaps swimming for the Christmas market in the old town and ski days at La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand, about 35 minutes up the road — ski in the morning, then fondue by the canal at night.
Budget Annecy by the fixed costs, not by the headline. The coach from Geneva starts at about €12, the train costs about €25, a city bus ride is about €1.60, and castle entry on the Talloires day runs €12 — the real variables are the room and the cheese.
Stack the transfer maths early, before you book: a pre-booked transfer only beats the coach when three or more split it, and a rental car earns its keep only on days that leave the lake.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for a lake that behaves like the mountains — sun, storms and cold water can share one afternoon. This is the full list:
Add a swimsuit for the town beaches, a warm layer for the Forclaz launch meadow, where the wind reads colder than the shore, and shoes with real grip for the castle climb and the canyon paths.
Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly
French runs Annecy. Hotel, tourist office and restaurant staff mostly work in English too, but market stallholders and bus drivers run on French — and a greeting before a question is the local etiquette.
Four phrases do most of the work:
BonjourhelloMercithank youS'il vous plaîtpleaseParlez-vous anglais?do you speak English
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. You land in Switzerland and sleep in France, and both sit inside Schengen — so most visa-exempt visitors, including Americans, Britons and Canadians, enter once and cross between the two freely for stays of up to 90 days in any 180.
Know what has changed at the border. The EU's EES entry-exit system is now operational: on a first Schengen entry your photo and fingerprints are recorded, which can add minutes at Geneva passport control. It replaces passport stamping, and it is free.
Do not pay anyone for ETIAS. The travel authorisation is not in operation yet — it is expected in 2027 and will cost €20 when it starts, bought only through the official EU site. Any site selling you one today is a scam.
Safety and health
Swim at the supervised beaches and respect the cold water
The lake is famously clean, but it is a mountain lake — the water stays bracing well into summer and the shore shelves steeply at the town beaches. Swim inside the marked areas at Albigny and the Marquisats in season, and get out when a storm builds over the lake.
Book adventure days with certified, insured operators
Canyoning and paragliding are regulated sports in France, and the good outfits carry state-certified guides and provide every piece of kit you need. Weather cancels launches and closes canyons without apology — keep a spare day rather than pressuring anyone to fly or descend.
Dial 112 for any emergency
The operator connects police, ambulance and fire; 15 reaches SAMU medical help directly. Annecy's hospital centre sits just north of the old town in Metz-Tessy, and town pharmacies — look for the green cross — handle most minor problems without an appointment.
Take sun, altitude and the old town crowds seriously
The Forclaz launch sits above 1,100 metres and the midday sun bounces off the lake, so sunscreen matters even on a cloudy morning. The market lanes pack tight on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings — keep your bag zipped, your phone in a front pocket and your footing sure on the cobbles.
The things travellers ask in the first 48 hours: the airport that is in Geneva, the coach across the border and the tax on the room bill.
Coach and train times checked against FlixBus, BlaBlaCar Bus and rail listings in October 2026; entry rules against the European Commission's EES and ETIAS guidance.
Take the direct coach. FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus run from Geneva Airport to Annecy bus station in about 50 minutes, from about €12. Trains take about 1 hour 30 minutes with a change at Geneva Cornavin. Book the coach ahead in summer.
Not for scheduled flights. Annecy Haute-Savoie Mont Blanc airport handles private and business aviation only. Geneva (GVA), about 40 km north, is the gateway; Lyon (LYS) is the second option at about two hours by train or coach.
Euros in Annecy, Swiss francs at Geneva Airport. Most airport shops accept euros but give change in francs, so pay by card until you cross into France. Cards and contactless work almost everywhere in Annecy itself.
A per-adult, per-night city tax added on top of the room rate, scaled to the property's star rating — a four-star palace hotel currently lists €2.60 a night. Under-18s are exempt, and it is usually settled at the hotel.
Not yet. ETIAS is not in operation; it is expected in 2027 and will cost €20. The EES entry-exit system is live, so first-time Schengen entry now includes a photo and fingerprints. Ignore any site selling ETIAS today.
June to September for swimming and the lake beaches, with the Fête du Lac fireworks on the first Saturday of August. December to February swaps the lake for the ski areas of La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand, about 35 minutes away.
Fares change — the operators' pages always win.
