Chengdu: your first hour after landing

You have just landed in a city with two airports, one panda appointment you cannot miss and a hot pot with your name on it. This guide covers the TFU and CTU transfers, where to sleep from a Tianfu Square grand hotel to a Taikoo Li hostel, the panda morning done right, a first day of teahouses and old alleys, and the Buddha and waterworks that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Chengdu. Check the airport code first — most internationals land at Tianfu (TFU), 50 km out, where Line 18 and Line 1 ride to Tianfu Square in about 70 minutes for ¥11 — with an Airalo eSIM and Alipay set up before you land, and the panda morning booked ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Two airports Tianfu (TFU) about 50 km south-east, Shuangliu (CTU) about 16 km south-west — Most international flights use TFU; CTU is mostly domestic. Check the code on your ticket.
Getting in
Metro ¥11 from TFU, about ¥5 from CTU, airport bus ¥15, taxi about ¥200 from TFU Line 18 plus Line 1 links TFU to Tianfu Square in about 70 minutes; TFU buses run through the night at ¥25.
Currency
Chinese yuan (CNY) Alipay and WeChat Pay run daily life — link an international card before you land. Cash still works at most places.
Languages
Mandarin, with Sichuanese all around you English is limited outside hotels and tour operators; a translation app and your hotel address in Chinese characters carry the day.
Time zone
China Standard Time (UTC+8), no daylight saving One time zone covers the whole country.
Emergency
110 police, 120 ambulance, 119 fire Save the numbers; your hotel front desk is the fastest interpreter in an emergency.
Plugs
Type A, C and I, 220V Many sockets take all three shapes; bring an adapter if your plugs match none of them.
Tap water
Boil it first do not drink it straight — Hotels supply bottled water and a kettle. Brushing your teeth is fine.
Tourist tax
None accommodation carries 6% VAT instead — There is no city tourist tax. Judge quotes by the final total — some hotels add a service charge.
Best months
March to May and September to November Cool mornings keep the pandas active; summer is hot, humid and rainy, winter damp and grey.

Settle in

Land in Chengdu and do the unglamorous things first — China rewards travellers who set up on day one. Confirm TFU or CTU on your ticket before following any signs: two airports share the city name.

Set up your phone before you leave the terminal: a Yesim eSIM loads a China data plan in minutes, so Alipay, maps and the metro app work from the kerb. For a longer China trip, compare Saily and Airalo. Link your bank card inside Alipay or WeChat Pay while the airport wifi holds — that step unlocks metros, taxis, noodle shops and market stalls.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

Hand your passport over at check-in: every hotel must register foreign guests with the police, and the desk handles it as routine. Keep a photo of it on your phone for bookings.

If a cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

The Heming Teahouse entrance in People's Park, Chengdu

Times are airport to city centre.

Metro Line 18 and Line 1 from Tianfu (TFU)

Line 18 runs from the T1 and T2 station to Chengdu South Station in about 40 to 50 minutes; change to Line 1 for Tianfu Square. Trains run about 06:00 to 23:35; Line 19 links TFU to Shuangliu Airport, not the centre

¥11about 70 min

Metro Line 10 from Shuangliu (CTU)

Stations sit at both CTU terminals; ride to Taipingyuan (about 13 minutes) and change to Line 3 or Line 7 for the centre. Trains run about 06:14 to 23:25 from the airport

about ¥5about 35 min

Airport bus from Tianfu (TFU)

Direct buses to Chunxi Road, Jinsha, the zoo and the main rail stations, every 20 to 30 minutes; the night fare of ¥25 applies from 23:30 to 06:00 and makes this the only public option after the metro stops

¥15 day, ¥25 nightabout 90 min

Taxi or DiDi from Tianfu (TFU)

Metered from the T1 and T2 ranks with the expressway toll on top of the city fare; DiDi from the P1 and P2 pick-up zones often comes in lower. Have your hotel address in Chinese characters ready to show

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and its twin terminals from above

Chengdu has two airports and the gap between them is the first trap. Tianfu International (TFU), about 50 km south-east, takes most international flights; Shuangliu (CTU), about 16 km south-west, is now mostly domestic. The metro anchors both: Line 18 runs from TFU to Chengdu South Station, where Line 1 continues to Tianfu Square, and Line 10 serves both CTU terminals. The airport rides are these:

In town, the metro does the heavy lifting: fares from ¥2, signs and announcements in English. Pay per ride inside Alipay or WeChat Pay, or buy single tickets at the machines. Line 3 is the panda line, Line 2 crosses the centre through Chunxi Road, Line 4 reaches the Wide and Narrow Alleys. DiDi — its own app, or inside Alipay — is cheap and removes the language gap entirely.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price — worth it with kids or a post-midnight TFU landing. Foreign licences are not valid in China, so price a pickup on AutoEurope only if you hold a Chinese licence.

In the city

Start with the pandas, and start early. Ride Line 3 to Panda Avenue station, then the shuttle bus to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and be at the gate for the 07:30 opening: the pandas eat, climb and wrestle through the cool morning, then sleep away the afternoon. Book ahead (see Day trips), carry the passport you booked with, and give the base a full morning.

Slow down in the afternoon the Chengdu way. Claim a bamboo chair at the Heming Teahouse in People's Park with a lidded bowl of jasmine tea, then stroll the Wide and Narrow Alleys — Qing-dynasty lanes of teahouses and courtyard bars, best after 16:00 when the tour groups thin.

End the day at Taikoo Li and Chunxi Road: photograph the giant panda climbing the IFS tower, step into the quiet of Daci Temple inside the shopping district, and cross to Jinli Ancient Street after dark.

Book the headline days before you arrive, because panda mornings sell out first — browse the Chengdu listings on GetYourGuide for guided versions, and compare Klook when stacking tickets.

Where to eat first

A Sichuan hot pot spread with chillies, peppercorns and dipping bowls

Eat hot pot on day one — Chengdu is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and the bubbling pot is its ceremony. A proper pot runs on beef tallow, dried chillies and Sichuan peppercorns: numbing and fragrant as much as hot. Order a split yuanyang pot (half clear broth) if your group spans spice levels, and build a dip of sesame oil, garlic and coriander. Sides to know: mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and ice jelly to put the fire out. Three first stops:

Huangcheng Laoma.

The grand old name in Chengdu hot pot, at 106 Qintai Road by People's Park, serving since the 1980s. Expect about ¥150 a head and a queue at weekends — book ahead.

Shu Jiu Xiang.

The locals' favourite for the nine-grid pot, where each square of broth cooks at its own pace. The Yulin branch at No.11-2 Nijiaqiao Road packs out nightly; go before 18:00 or reserve.

Chen Mapo Tofu.

The house that invented mapo tofu in 1862, on West Yulong Street. Silken tofu in chilli-bean sauce under ground Sichuan pepper, at canteen prices.

Day trips and more

Three escapes cover Chengdu's greatest hits: the panda base done properly, the 71-metre Buddha at Leshan, and the quieter pandas at Dujiangyan. Book the panda pieces first — morning slots go earliest.

Chengdu Panda Base entry ticket

Pre-booked, real-name entry to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding: pick the morning session, scan your original passport at the gate, and walk the nursery houses and red panda runs at your own pace. Base entry is ¥55 — this ticket trades a small premium for a guaranteed slot in high season. Check availability →

The head and shoulders of the Leshan Giant Buddha carved into the cliff

Panda Base and Leshan Giant Buddha in one day

A full group day, out at about 07:40: the Panda Base at opening, then the 2.5-hour drive south to Leshan and the 71-metre Tang-dynasty Buddha, back at Tianfu Square by about 19:30. A half-day panda-only option runs inside the same product. Note for autumn and winter 2026: the plank road to the Buddha's feet is closed for conservation from 10 October 2026 to 17 January 2027 — the summit platform and river boats still give the full view. Check availability →

The Anlan suspension bridge over the Min River at the Dujiangyan irrigation system

Dujiangyan Panda Valley

Entry to the Dujiangyan Panda Base, where giant pandas and free-roaming red pandas live in big, green enclosures built for release training — the same pandas, a fraction of the crowd. Scan your passport at the gate, then pair it with the Dujiangyan irrigation system next door, a working waterworks from 256 BC. Check availability →

When to go and what it costs

Anshun Bridge lit up at night, reflected in the Jin River

March to May and September to November are the sweet spot: mild days, clearer skies, pandas outdoors and active. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid — 26°C to 31°C, heavy downpours, indoor panda viewing by midday. Winter is the quiet season: 5°C to 10°C, damp and grey, with the cheapest rooms. Two crowd warnings: the October Golden Week (around 1 October) and Spring Festival fill every train, hotel and panda slot — book early or pick other weeks.

A backpacker in a dorm, on noodle shops and the metro: ¥200 to ¥300 a day. Mid-range — a good central hotel, a full hot pot dinner, a panda morning: ¥600 to ¥900 a day. A splurge day with the Ritz-Carlton and a private Leshan car passes ¥2,000.

Do the panda maths early: the base is cheap (¥55 entry) but the morning slot is the scarce resource — book the right session before it sells out.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for humidity and one sharp shower — Chengdu can run warm sun, grey damp and a downpour through a single week. This is the full list:

Add the Chengdu extras: a compact umbrella that lives in the daypack, a light layer for air-conditioned malls and metro cars, and stomach settlers you trust. Download your VPN, translation app and payment apps before you fly — several services are hard to reach after landing.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry

Visitors strolling the Wide and Narrow Alleys in Chengdu's old town

Mandarin is the working language and Sichuanese the music underneath it. Lead with a smile and nǐ hǎo, keep the translation app open, and show addresses in Chinese characters — screenshot your hotel and every restaurant before you leave wifi. Restaurants run on QR-code menus; the translation camera gets orders placed. Dinner peaks early, from 18:00.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Nǐ hǎohelloXièxiethank youMǎidānthe bill, pleaseBú lànot spicy

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US, UK and Canadian citizens are NOT on China's 30-day visa-free list: a straightforward holiday needs an L tourist visa applied for in advance. The exception is the 240-hour visa-free transit: fly in from one country and out to a different third country or region Hong Kong counts, hold a confirmed onward ticket, and you may stay up to 10 days, with Chengdu inside the permitted area. A round trip back to where you started does not qualify. Many other passports — most of Europe, Australia, Japan — get 30 days visa-free instead.

Complete the arrival card online before you land or on paper at the airport, and keep your passport on you — sights and stations ask for the original.

Safety and health

Set up payments and connectivity before you land

Chengdu is safe in the ways that surprise visitors — the real first-day risk is a dead end at a till: a shop that cannot change a ¥100 note, a taxi that wants a QR code. Link a card in Alipay or WeChat Pay, carry small cash anyway, and install your VPN and eSIM before departure.

Respect the mala

Sichuan heat is cumulative, and peppercorn numbness fools first-timers into one plate too many. Order wēi là (mildly spicy) or bú là (not spicy) without embarrassment, and keep the ice jelly coming after a long-haul flight.

Book panda and rail tickets only through official or established channels

The Panda Base sells real-name tickets through its official mini-program and authorised sellers; anyone offering gate-side tickets or a guide who can "skip the passport check" is selling a problem. Book high-speed rail the same way, with the passport you will travel on.

Watch the weather, not the neighbourhoods

Summer downpours flood underpasses and turn old-town lanes slick within minutes. The centre, alleys and river walks are busy and well lit late; use normal care in the Jiuyanqiao bar streets.

Chengdu questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The things travellers ask in the first 48 hours: two airports, one visa trap and a panda ticket that sells out by session.

Fares checked against Trip.com's TFU guide and Chengdu metro reporting, October 2026; entry rules against China's 240-hour transit guidance and 2026 US traveller summaries; Panda Base prices against the base's official visitor service.

Most international flights use Tianfu (TFU), about 50 km south-east; Shuangliu (CTU), about 16 km south-west, is now mostly domestic. The airport code on your ticket decides everything — the two sit on opposite sides of the city and both have metro stations.

Ride Metro Line 18 from the T1 and T2 station to Chengdu South Station, then Line 1 to Tianfu Square: about 70 minutes and ¥11. Airport buses to Chunxi Road cost ¥15 by day and ¥25 at night and run when the metro stops; a metered taxi or DiDi costs about ¥200.

Usually, yes. The US, UK and Canada are not on China's 30-day visa-free list, so a standard holiday needs an L tourist visa applied for in advance. The exception is the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit: arrive from one country and leave to a different third country or region with a confirmed onward ticket — a round trip home does not qualify.

Tickets are real-name and booked online in advance — ¥55 for adults, ¥27 for eligible students — through the base's official mini-program or authorised sellers, with morning and afternoon sessions. You enter on the original passport you booked with, and the morning session matters most: pandas are active early and sleep away the afternoon.

Link an international card inside Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive — that is how Chengdu pays for metros, taxis, restaurants and market stalls. International cards work directly at hotels and big malls, and cash is still accepted, though small vendors may not have change for large notes.

March to May and September to November: mild weather, clearer skies and pandas outdoors in the cool mornings. Summer is hot, humid and rainy (26°C to 31°C), winter damp and grey at 5°C to 10°C — and avoid the early-October Golden Week, when the whole country travels.

Fares change — the airport, metro and Panda Base pages always win.
