Limestone karsts rising straight out of the calm water of Ha Long Bay

Halong Bay: your first hour after landing

You have just landed in Hanoi, bound for Ha Long Bay — and that is the normal way round. Almost every visitor arrives overland, so your first hour is a transfer: a limousine bus or a private car down the expressway to Ha Long City, about three hours east. What waits is a seascape, not a city sight — more than 1,600 limestone karsts rising out of emerald water, worked by cruise boats out of Bai Chay, the tourist shore where the hotels, ports and night market sit. This guide walks the arrival in order — transfers from both airports, where to sleep between sailings, the first cha muc, the cruises, the bay ticket, and the weather rule that outranks every plan: when the authority says no sailing, there is no sailing.

The short version

You just landed in Halong Bay. Except the landing happened in Hanoi — the bay is still an expressway ride away, so sort the transfer first and book the limousine seat before you fly. Keep an Airalo eSIM live for the ride, the ports and the Grab app, and book the overnight cruise early — the good boats sell out, and a night anchored among the karsts is the whole point of coming.

Quick facts

Airport
Noi Bai International (HAN) in Hanoi, about 170 km west the bay's own Van Don (VDO) sits about 55 km east — Most visitors land at HAN and ride the expressway down. Van Don is closer but thin — mostly domestic links and charters. Hai Phong's Cat Bi (HPH) is the third option, about an hour by road.
Getting in
The limousine bus from Noi Bai reaches Bai Chay in about 3 to 3.5 hours for about US$22 A private car cuts it to about 2.5 hours from about US$60 per car. From Van Don, the airport shuttle bus is free and a taxi takes about an hour — see Getting around.
Currency
The Vietnamese dong (VND) cash rules the markets, ports and small restaurants — Hotels and cruise offices take cards, and ATMs are everywhere in Bai Chay — dong notes run big, so a 500,000 note is everyday money.
Languages
Vietnamese runs Ha Long; English works in hotels, cruise offices and tour desks Market stalls and taxi ranks run on Vietnamese — the phrase chips below and a translation app cover the rest.
Time zone
Indochina Time (UTC+7) all year, with no daylight saving The same time as Bangkok.
Emergency
113 for police, 114 for fire, 115 for an ambulance On the water your cruise crew is the first responder.
Plugs
Type A, C and F sockets at 220 volts Most hotels use multi-standard sockets that fit all three; a universal adapter covers the rest.
Tap water
Do not drink it bottled and filtered water only — Hotels supply bottled or filtered water. Ice in established restaurants is factory-made and safe.
Tourist tax
No hotel tax the charge is the bay ticket: 240,000 to 290,000 VND per person, by route — Routes 1, 2 and 5 cost 290,000 dong including the port fee; routes 3 and 4 cost 240,000. An overnight on the main route runs 550,000 dong per person, collected through your cruise. Children under 1.2 m tall go free.
Best months
October to December for clear skies, calm water and the best sailing March and April run second; June to August brings typhoon cancellations.

Settle in

Land at Noi Bai and treat the arrival as a transfer drill: immigration, one booked ride, then three hours of expressway before the karsts appear.

Set up data before you leave home — a Vietnam plan on an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so the limousine booking, the hotel address and the Grab app all work from arrivals. For a longer Vietnam run, compare Saily and Yesim.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

Sort the cruise timing now, not at the port: overnight boats board around midday at Tuan Chau Marina or Ha Long International Port. A morning landing connects the same day; an afternoon landing means a night in Bai Chay first.

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Limousine bus from Noi Bai Airport

Shared 9 to 16-seat vans with air conditioning and hotel drop-off. Departures from the airport are fewer than from central Hanoi, so book the seat before you fly — 12go and the operators sell the same vans.

Private car from Noi Bai Airport

The fastest door-to-door option, and the only sensible one for a late landing or a same-day cruise check-in. Agree whether expressway tolls are included before you book.

Shuttle bus from Van Don Airport

Routes 14A (to Lan Be Park) and 14B (to the Sun World complex) run about every 30 minutes and are currently free for arriving passengers — the timetable follows flights, so confirm the next departure at the information desk.

Ha Long City splits in two: Bai Chay on the west bank — hotels, beach, night market and both cruise ports — and Hon Gai, the local city, across the Bai Chay Bridge. You will sleep, eat and sail from Bai Chay; Hon Gai is for the museum and the real town. The rides in:

Choose the limousine bus by default — cheap, comfortable, door-to-door. Choose the private car for a late landing, a same-day cruise or a group of three. From Van Don, take the free shuttle when its timetable meets your flight.

Compare a pre-booked transfer — a Kiwitaxi transfer or Welcome Pickups puts a driver in arrivals at a fixed price, useful from Noi Bai after dark. Driving yourself is not the move here: price it on AutoEurope if you must.

In town, Grab (car or bike) is the default — the fare is quoted in the app, which ends the taxi negotiation. Bai Chay's hotel strip along Ha Long Street is walkable end to end.

In the city

Start with the water, because the bay is the city. Walk the Bai Chay promenade at dawn, when the day boats load and the karsts go silver.

Ride the Queen Cable Car across the bay mouth toward Hon Gai — the crossing is the best cheap panorama in town. Behind it, the Sun World complex (Dragon Park, Typhoon Water Park) is the family half-day; the cable car runs about 500,000 dong return.

Cross to Hon Gai for the Quang Ninh Museum, the black mirrored block on the waterfront — coal, history and the bay's geology under one roof. Hon Gai is also where Ha Long actually lives: markets, coffee shops and seafood rows without the resort markup.

End the day at the Ha Long Night Market on the Marine Boulevard — grilled seafood, pearls of variable honesty, and the cha muc stalls on their second shift. Browse the Ha Long listings on GetYourGuide for cruises that bundle transfers, and compare Klook when stacking the cable car and the water park.

Book ahead for October to December, when the good rooms go first.

Where to eat first

A whole fish grilling over charcoal, the Bai Chay seafood ritual

Eat the bay first: cha muc, Ha Long's grilled squid patties, is the dish the city claims as its own — pounded, hand-grilled, served with sticky rice or rolled into banh cuon. Three first stops:

Cai Dam Market, Bai Chay.

Start where the boats unload — the food rows inside Bai Chay's main market grill cha muc to order, served with sticky rice the way the city eats it at breakfast. Go in the morning and carry small notes.

The seafood rows along Ha Long Street, Bai Chay.

Pick your dinner still swimming — the strip's restaurants keep live tanks of crab, prawns, oysters and squid, priced by weight and cooked how you point. Agree the price per kilo before anything leaves the tank.

Ha Long Night Market, Ha Long Marine Boulevard.

Graze the evening stalls — grilled oysters with scallion oil, snails in coconut milk, and cha muc again for the road. Tourist-priced, and still worth it once.

For a seafood cooking class or a market walk with a local, browse the Ha Long listings on GetYourGuide and book ahead in high season.

Day trips and more

The day trips here are the main event wearing a day-trip label. Book the boats ahead in season.

The day cruise

Board at Ha Long International Port around 11:00 for route 2, the greatest hits: buffet lunch among the karsts, the vast chambers of Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, a kayak or bamboo boat through Luon Cave, then a swim or the 300-step climb on Ti Top Island before the sunset party sails you home by 18:00. It rates 4.7 out of 5 from 8 reviews, from US$45. Check availability →

The overnight cruise

Take the signature stay: a balcony cabin on a two-day sailing from Tuan Chau into Lan Ha and Ha Long, with kayaking at Ao Ech lagoon, the Dark and Bright Cave by bamboo boat, a cooking class, squid fishing after dinner and tai chi at dawn. It rates 4.9 out of 5 from 2,712 reviews, from US$125. Check availability →

The harbour at Cat Ba town, boats moored under the karsts of Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba

Sail the same karst seascape with a fraction of the boats: out past the Cai Beo floating village to Viet Hai, inside Cat Ba National Park, then kayaking and swimming off the boat. Join from Hanoi or from Cat Ba Town. It rates 4.8 out of 5 from 638 reviews, from about US$48. Check availability →

Leave a spare half-day unbooked — the flex day turns a weather cancellation into a reshuffle instead of a ruined trip.

When to go and what it costs

Winter mist hanging over the karsts and a lone boat on the bay

Come October to December for the postcard version — dry air, calm water, the karsts sharp against a blue sky — and book the boats and rooms ahead.

Come in January and February for the moody version — cold mist sitting on the water, half the boats, the year's cheapest rooms, beautiful and genuinely cold on deck.

In June to August the heat sits near 30°C, the rain arrives in walls, and typhoons can close the bay for days at a time. The authority cancels sailings on safety, not on your itinerary — keep the flex day and insurance that knows it.

Budget by the fixed costs. The limousine bus is about US$22, the bay ticket 290,000 dong on the classic route, a day cruise from US$45, the overnight from US$125 — the variables are the room and the seafood, and both spike on holiday weekends.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for a boat, a cave and a promenade. This is the full list:

Add swimwear and a dry bag, plus a warm layer from November to February, when the mist makes the sundeck colder than it looks.

Language, visa and entry

! Check visa requirements before you fly

A Vietnamese night market after dark, neon signs over the food stalls

Vietnamese runs Ha Long. Hotel desks, cruise crews and tour offices work in English; the market and the grill stalls mostly do not — and a greeting before the pointing is local etiquette.

Six phrases do most of the work:

Xin chàohelloCảm ơnthank youBao nhiêu tiền?how much does it cost?Tính tiềnthe bill, pleaseBến cảng ở đâu?where is the port?Ngon lắmdelicious

Sort the visa before booking anything non-refundable. Vietnam's e-visa has been open to citizens of every country since August 2023: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, applied for on the official portal, evisa.gov.vn — US$25 single, US$50 multiple, decided in about three working days. Apply a week or more ahead, check the entry port printed on it (Noi Bai and Van Don are both e-visa gates), and print a copy for the immigration desk.

Many passports need no visa for a short trip — much of Europe, the UK, Japan and South Korea enter free for 45 days — but Americans, Canadians and Australians need the e-visa. Either way, your passport needs six months of validity. Ignore lookalike visa sites charging triple; the portal above is the only one the government runs.

Pay the bay ticket see Quick facts through your cruise or at the port — a per-route sightseeing charge, not a hotel tax. It sits inside most cruise prices, which is why a quote excluding it looks suspiciously cheap.

Safety and health

Let the weather call the sailing

The bay authority cancels cruises in typhoons and heavy seas, most often from June to September. A cancellation is a refund-or-rebook conversation, never a negotiation — keep a flex day, and never pressure a crew to sail into refused weather.

Book cruises through traceable channels

The classic Ha Long disappointment is the too-cheap boat that exists mostly in a tout's photo. Book through your hotel, a named operator or a platform with a record, and check the boat name on your voucher matches the boat at the dock.

Watch the water, not just the view

Swim only where the crew says, wear the life jacket to kayak, and take care on wet decks and tender transfers — most bay injuries are slips, not swims. Jellyfish show up in summer; ask before you jump.

Use Grab and agreed fares on land

App fares end arguments before they start: agree taxi prices before the ride, keep small notes for markets, and dial 115 for an ambulance — Ha Long's main hospital sits in Hon Gai, across the bridge.

Facts checked October 2026.

The limousine bus is the default: vans run from Noi Bai arrivals to Bai Chay hotels and the cruise ports in about 3 to 3.5 hours, for about US$22 — book the seat before you fly. A private car does it in about 2.5 hours from about US$60 per car.

Closer, not busier. Van Don (VDO) is about 55 km from Ha Long City — an hour by road, with a free airport shuttle — but its scheduled flights are mostly domestic links and seasonal charters. If a flight fits your dates, take it; otherwise Noi Bai has the connections.

Usually, yes. Vietnam's e-visa has been open to every nationality since August 2023: up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, US$25 or US$50 on the official portal (evisa.gov.vn) — apply a week ahead and print it. Many passports (much of Europe, the UK, Japan, South Korea) also enter free for 45 days; Americans, Canadians and Australians need the e-visa.

The day cruise covers the greatest hits — Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave, Ti Top Island. But the overnight is the signature: kayaking before the day boats arrive, and a night anchored among the karsts. If the budget stretches to one splurge, this is it.

One ticket per route, bought through your cruise or at the port. Routes 1, 2 and 5 cost 290,000 dong including the port fee; routes 3 and 4 cost 240,000. Overnight on the main route runs 550,000 dong per person. Children under 1.2 m tall go free.

October to December for clear skies and calm water, March and April second. January and February bring cold sea mist. June to August is hot and stormy, and the bay authority can cancel sailings at short notice, so keep a flex day.
