Macau: your first hour after landing

You have just landed on Taipa, in a city of two halves: a 450-year-old Portuguese-Chinese port of mosaic squares, temples and egg tarts, and the neon Cotai Strip that out-earns Las Vegas. This guide covers the free shuttle ride in, where to sleep from a fortress pousada to a heritage hotel, the 5% hotel tax, the first Macanese dinner, and the tower, the show and the Hong Kong run that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Macau. The airport sits on Taipa, minutes from Cotai and about 20 minutes from the Peninsula — the move is your hotel's shuttle, with an Airalo eSIM for maps, Hong Kong dollars spending at 1:1, and the historic walk, the tower and the Cotai show worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Macau International (MFM), on Taipa about 4 km from Cotai and 9 km from the Peninsula centre — One compact terminal off Taipa. Many visitors also arrive over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, by ferry, or across the Gongbei border from Zhuhai.
Getting in
Free hotel shuttle, LRT MOP 6 to MOP 12, taxi about MOP 90 to the Peninsula, bus MOP 6 Free casino and hotel shuttles are the real transfer network. The LRT reaches Cotai in about 15 minutes; taxis take about 20 minutes to Senado Square.
Currency
Macanese pataca (MOP), pegged to the Hong Kong dollar Hong Kong dollars are accepted 1:1 almost everywhere — The peg is HK$1 to MOP 1.03, but shops take Hong Kong dollars at par and often give change in patacas. Spend patacas before you leave — they are hard to exchange abroad.
Languages
Cantonese and Portuguese are official; English works in hotels, casinos and tour offices Street signs run in Chinese and Portuguese. Taxi drivers mostly work in Cantonese — keep your hotel's Chinese address on your phone.
Time zone
China Standard Time (UTC+8) all year no daylight saving — Macau keeps the same offset as Hong Kong and mainland China, so ferry and bridge timetables never shift.
Emergency
999 for police, fire and ambulance The public hospital is Conde de São Januário on the Peninsula. Cotai resorts run clinics for anything smaller.
Plugs
Type G three-pin sockets, 220 volts The British-style plug, shared with Hong Kong — the standard every hotel uses.
Tap water
Safe to drink the treated supply meets drinking standards — Macau's water is treated and tested. Many locals still boil or filter out of habit; visitors can drink it as it comes.
Tourist tax
Hotels add a 5% government tourism tax, plus usually a 10% service charge Both sit on top of the quoted room rate, so compare totals, not headline prices. Restaurants outside hotels are exempt from the tourism tax.
Best months
October to December cooler, drier and clear, with March and April a good second choice — June to September is hot, humid and typhoon season. Chinese New Year and the mainland Golden Weeks bring the heaviest crowds and highest rates.

Settle in

Touch down at MFM and remember the geography: the airport is on Taipa, Cotai is minutes away, and the historic Peninsula sits across the Sai Van bridges. Your base decides your transfer.

Set up data first — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and hotel messages work from arrivals. For a longer Asia trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order:

Arriving another way is normal here. From Hong Kong's airport, the bridge shuttle bus (the gold bus) crosses to the Macau port for HK$65 by day; ferries from Sheung Wan take about an hour; from Zhuhai you walk across the Gongbei border gate.

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

The Cotai Strip resorts by day, the Galaxy and Venetian towers under a wide sky

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Free hotel shuttle

Shuttle bays outside arrivals; every Cotai resort and most big Peninsula hotels run one, frequent by day and built for luggage — check your hotel's board for its bay and timetable

Macau is tiny — 33 square kilometres — and stitched together by free shuttles, cheap buses and one light rail line. The rides in from MFM:

Choose the shuttle when your hotel runs one — free and frequent by day. Choose the LRT for Cotai and Taipa; choose a taxi late at night, after the last LRT.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself rarely pays here — parking is scarce and the old town is a one-way maze — but price a pickup on AutoEurope first if a cross-border run is planned.

In town, city buses are a flat MOP 6 in cash (exact coins) or MOP 3 with a Macau Pass — MOP 4 on express X routes. Taxis start at MOP 21 for the first 1.6 km, then MOP 2 per 220 metres, plus MOP 3 per bag and an MOP 8 airport surcharge. The historic centre is best walked: Senado to the Ruins to A-Ma Temple is about two hours with stops.

In the city

Start at Senado Square, the wave-patterned mosaic plaza at the heart of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre. Face the pastel Leal Senado building, step into butter-yellow St. Dominic's Church, then climb the lanes to the Ruins of St. Paul's — the carved facade of a 17th-century church, all that survived the fire of 1835. Go early: by midday the square below is a wall of tour groups.

Walk south to A-Ma Temple, the seafarers' temple that gave Macau its name, then along Avenida da República past the Barra shore villas. The other Macau waits across the bridge: Cotai, where the Venetian's canals, the Parisian's half-scale Eiffel Tower and the Londoner's Big Ben face each other across one strip. Walk it once at night, fully lit.

Give an afternoon to Taipa Village, a short walk from Cotai: the mint-green Taipa Houses, Our Lady of Carmo Church and Rua do Cunha food street.

Browse GetYourGuide for historic-centre walks and Cotai show tickets, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

After you land in Macau: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Pousada de São Tiago.
Splurge

Pousada de São Tiago.

Best for the fortress splurge — 12 suites inside a 1629 fort at the Barra tip of the Peninsula

Sleep inside a fortress on Avenida da República, at the Barra tip of the Peninsula — the 1629 São Tiago da Barra fort, converted in 1981 into a 12-suite hideaway of stone tunnels, a chapel and balconies over the Inner Harbour. Book it for the most atmospheric rooms in Macau.

Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16.
Mid-range

Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16.

Best for full-service comfort on the Inner Harbour, with the historic centre on foot

Stay on Rua do Visconde Paço de Arcos at the Inner Harbour — a 408-room Accor five-star from 2008 with a pool and three restaurants, facing Zhuhai across the water. The Ruins are a 10 to 15 minute walk. Book it for full-service comfort inside the old town, not on the Cotai strip.

Hou Kong Hotel.
Budget

Hou Kong Hotel.

Best for budget beds five minutes from Senado Square, in an 80-year-old heritage building

Bed down at Travessa das Virtudes 1, five minutes from Senado Square — an 80-year-old Portuguese-style heritage building, recently renovated, with family rooms and bus stops at the door. Rooms are plain; the value is the address.

Pick your side first. The Peninsula is the historic Macau: Senado Square, the Ruins and local restaurants on foot. Cotai is the resort Macau: giant integrated resorts, shows, malls and free shuttles, and nothing much that predates 2005. History-first travellers should sleep on the Peninsula and visit Cotai; resort-weekenders should do the reverse.

Book ahead for Chinese New Year, Golden Week and Grand Prix weekend. Expect the 5% tourism tax and usually a 10% service charge on top of the quoted rate.

Where to eat first

A tray of Portuguese egg tarts, blistered and golden, fresh from the oven

Eat Macanese first — Portuguese technique meeting Cantonese ingredients and trade-route spices: African chicken in coconut and chilli, minchi over rice, bacalhau in every form, and an egg tart to finish. Three first stops:

A Lorcha, Rua do Almirante Sérgio 289, by A-Ma Temple.

Book the city's best-loved Portuguese-Macanese table — flame-grilled chouriço, clams with garlic, African chicken. It fills nightly; reserve early.

Lord Stow's Bakery, Rua da Tassera 1, Coloane Village.

Eat the original egg tart where Andrew Stow first baked it in 1989 — crisp shell, wobbly custard, best warm. The Peninsula shortcut is Margaret's Café e Nata near Senado Square.

Rua do Cunha, Taipa Village.

Graze the food street end to end: pork chop buns, warm almond cookies, serradura (sawdust pudding) and durian ice cream.

For food walks, browse the Macau listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.

Day trips and more

Macau fills its second day easily: the guided historic centre, the tower above the harbour, and the one show everyone flies in for. Hong Kong is the true day trip — an hour each way and a separate immigration stamp, so carry your passport.

Senado Square at night, its wave-patterned mosaic pavement shining after rain

Macau historic city walk

A full day: the Ruins of St. Paul's, Mount Fortress and the Macau Museum, A-Ma Temple, Senado Square and St. Dominic's Church, lunch included, then photo stops at the Kun Iam statue and Macau Tower before the Cotai resorts. From about US$69. Check availability →

Macau Tower and the Sai Van Bridge lit up at blue hour

Macau Tower observation decks

Ride the glass-fronted lift to the deck in about a minute: glass floor sections, the bridges and the Pearl River Delta below. Rated 4.8 from recent reviews, from about US$12. Time it for golden hour. Check availability →

The Venetian Macao across its canal at night, a gondola on the water

House of Dancing Water at City of Dreams

Ninety minutes of aerial acrobatics, diving and stunts over a stage that floods and drains, in a purpose-built 270-degree theatre. Rated 4.7 from recent reviews, from about US$89. Exchange your voucher at the box office first, with photo ID. Check availability →

Leave a spare half-day for Coloane: pastel lanes, the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier and black-sand Hac Sa Beach.

When to go and what it costs

The Macau Peninsula skyline and the Grand Lisboa across the Inner Harbour at dusk

October to December is the sweet spot: humidity drops, skies clear and walking the old town's hills is a pleasure. March and April run second. June to September brings real heat and typhoon season — a Signal 8 hoisting stops ferries, the bridge and most buses. Winter is mild, rarely below 10°C, but Chinese New Year fills every hotel.

Anchor prices in patacas, at about MOP 8 to US$1. A city bus is MOP 6, an LRT hop MOP 6 to 12, a taxi across the Peninsula MOP 40 to 60. An egg tart is about MOP 12, a Macanese dinner MOP 200 to 400 a person.

A backpacker in a budget Peninsula room, on buses and bakery lunches: MOP 600 to 800 a day. Mid-range — a full-service old-town hotel, A Lorcha dinners, a tower ticket: MOP 1,800 to 2,500 a day. A Cotai splurge day passes MOP 3,500.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for cobblestones, hills and fierce air conditioning — casinos and malls run cold even in August. This is the full list:

Add the Macau extras: a Type G adapter if your plugs are not British-style, coins for bus fares, and your passport on any Hong Kong or Zhuhai day — three separate immigration areas.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

The entrance gate of A-Ma Temple, visitors on the mosaic plaza below the hill

Cantonese runs daily life and Portuguese shares official status — street names and signs carry both. The blend is the point of the place: a Chinese temple two lanes from a baroque church, egg tarts beside almond cookies in every bakery window. English works in hotels, casinos and tour offices, and thins out in neighbourhood cafés.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Néih hóuhelloM̀hgōithank you, and excuse meGéidō chín?how much is it?Màaih dāanthe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US passport holders enter visa-free for up to 30 days; UK passport holders get up to 180 days, and most EU passports 90 days. There is no eVisa and nothing to apply for — immigration stamps you in on arrival.

Macau is its own immigration area: a mainland China visa does not admit you here, a Macau entry does not admit you to the mainland, and Hong Kong is a third stamp again. Keep proof of onward travel and your hotel address on your phone, and carry the passport itself.

Safety and health

Watch your pockets in the midday crowds at the Ruins

The lanes below St. Paul's and around Senado Square pack shoulder to shoulder at peak hours, and that is where phones and wallets wander. Keep valuables zipped and in front of you.

Take typhoon signals seriously in summer

The signals run from 1 to 10: at Signal 8, ferries stop, the bridge closes to most traffic and buses wind down. Check the forecast each morning from June to September.

Ignore easy-money offers around the casinos

Macau is heavily policed and street crime is rare; the live risks are loan-shark and money-changing touts near the gaming floors. Change money at a bank or licensed exchanger, and remember the casino entry age is 21.

Pace yourself in the heat

Summer pairs 33°C with heavy humidity, and the historic centre is all hills and stone. Carry water, use air-conditioned museums as cooling stops, and treat a fever after a hot day as a reason to rest. For anything serious, dial 999.

Macau questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The shuttle, the two bases and the two currencies, in short.

Fares checked against Macau LRT fare tables, current taxi fare listings and 2026 Hong Kong to Macau fare trackers, October 2026; entry rules against Macau visa-exemption lists; hotel tax against PwC Macau tax summaries.

Ride your hotel's free shuttle if it runs one — every Cotai resort and most big Peninsula hotels meet flights at MFM. Otherwise the LRT costs MOP 6 to MOP 12, a taxi to Senado runs about MOP 90, and buses are a flat MOP 6 in exact coins.

The Peninsula for the historic Macau — Senado Square, the Ruins and local restaurants on foot. Cotai for the resort Macau — the integrated resorts, the shows and free shuttles. History-first trips sleep on the Peninsula and visit Cotai; resort weekends do the reverse.

No visa for US passport holders: up to 30 days visa-free, stamped in on arrival. UK passports get up to 180 days and most EU passports 90 days. Macau is a separate immigration area from Hong Kong and mainland China — a mainland China visa does not cover Macau.

Yes — Hong Kong dollars are accepted at 1:1 almost everywhere, though change often comes back in patacas. The pataca is pegged at HK$1 to MOP 1.03. Spend any patacas before you leave; they are hard to exchange abroad.

Hotels add a 5% government tourism tax, and most also add a 10% service charge, so compare the total, not the headline rate. Restaurants outside hotels are exempt from the tourism tax.

Easily — it is the classic pairing. Ferries from Sheung Wan take about an hour, and the bridge shuttle bus costs HK$65 by day from the Hong Kong port. Carry your passport: Hong Kong is a separate immigration stamp, and your Macau stay is granted fresh on return.

Fares change — the airport, the LRT and your hotel shuttle desk always win.
