You have just landed at Moi International, on the mainland at Port Reitz — and Mombasa's first puzzle is geography: the island centre across the Makupa Causeway, the Nyali and Bamburi beach strip north over the bridge, Diani south on the new bypass. This guide covers the ride in, where to sleep, the eTA and its new insurance rule, the first Swahili lunch, and the safari, reef and Old Town days that fill day two.

You just landed in Mombasa. The airport sits on the mainland at Port Reitz, about 30 minutes by causeway from the island — sort data with an Airalo eSIM for maps and ride apps, base in Nyali for the beach or on the island for Fort Jesus, and book the safari and boat days through GetYourGuide.
Quick facts
Airport
Moi International Airport (MBA) at Port Reitz, on the mainland about 18 km by road from the island centre Kenya's coastal gateway: most international arrivals connect through Nairobi. Nyali and Bamburi, the north-coast beach strip, are about 21 km from the terminal.
Getting in
Rank taxi KES 1,500 to 2,500 or an app cab, about 30 minutes to the island across the Makupa Causeway Matatus from the airport road are the budget way in. Diani trips no longer need the Likoni ferry — the Dongo Kundu Bypass runs from near the airport to the south coast.
Currency
Kenyan shilling (KES), about KES 130 to US$1 in October 2026 Cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants; carry shillings for matatus, tuk-tuks, markets and tips.
Languages
Swahili and English, both official and both widely spoken on the coast English runs hotels, tours and transport; a few Swahili phrases earn smiles everywhere else.
Time zone
East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year Kenya does not change its clocks — One time zone countrywide, so flight and SGR train timetables never shift by an hour.
Emergency
999 or 112 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in Kenya Save your hotel's number and your insurer's line in the same contacts list.
Plugs
Type G sockets the British three square pins — at 240 volts — US and European plugs need an adapter; bring your own for a first night with everything charging.
Tap water
Do not drink it use bottled or purified water, which hotels supply — Use bottled water for teeth for the first days if your stomach is sensitive, and be picky about ice outside bigger hotels.
Tourist tax
No per-night city lodging tax the extra cost to know is the mandatory Kenyan inbound travel health insurance bought during the eTA application, about US$44 on top of the US$30 eTA fee — Hotel rates carry VAT and Kenya's tourism levy inside the quoted price.
Best months
July to October for the cool, dry season, and January to March for hot, dry beach weather Avoid April and May, the long rains, when downpours flood roads. November and December bring the short rains — cheaper, greener, less predictable.
Map
Find your arrival stop, hotel, and first meal. Stays, sights, and landmarks in Mombasa — live hotel prices plus the key places from this guide.
Touch down at Moi International and treat the first hour as admin: the airport is on the mainland, the city is an island, and the base decision — island history or north-coast beach — decides which way your ride points.
Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from arrivals. For a longer Kenya trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
The arrival checklist, in order:
Hold an approved eTA before you board — there is no visa on arrival, and the eTA now comes with mandatory government travel health insurance
Line up cash or a card for the ride; agree any taxi fare before the car moves
Ride a rank taxi, an app cab or a pre-booked transfer in — never a ride offered by a tout inside the hall
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
Airport taxi (rank)
The rank sits outside arrivals; fares are agreed before you ride, not metered — confirm the price to your hotel before the door closes and ignore touts inside the hall
PriceKES 1,500 to 2,500 (about US$12 to 19)Journeyabout 30 min
App cab with Bolt, Uber or Little
Bolt, Uber and Little all serve the airport; the price is quoted in the app before you ride and swings with demand — meet at the pick-up area and check the plate
Priceabout KES 1,200 to 1,800 (about US$9 to 14)Journeyabout 30 min
Pre-booked private transfer
Fixed price agreed when you book, name board in arrivals; pre-booked listings for the island start at about US$22, with Nyali and Bamburi a little more
Pricefrom about US$22Journeyabout 30 to 45 min
Matatu from the airport road
Board outside the terminal on the airport road toward Mwembe Tayari; matatus leave when full, the conductor collects the fare, and there is no room for a big suitcase
PriceKES 50 to 100 (under US$1)Journeyabout 50 min
Mombasa's geography is the whole game. The airport sits at Port Reitz in Changamwe, on the mainland west. Mombasa Island — the centre, the Old Town, Fort Jesus — connects west over the Makupa Causeway (your airport road), north over the Nyali Bridge and south by the Likoni ferry. The rides in from MBA:
Choose a rank taxi or app cab for a normal arrival — about 30 minutes off-peak, longer in the rush-hour peaks. Add 15 minutes for Nyali and Bamburi. The matatu leaves when full and has no room for a big suitcase.
Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. For Diani, your driver takes the Dongo Kundu Bypass from near the airport — 30 to 45 minutes, no ferry queue. Driving yourself, price the pick-up on AutoEurope first.
In town, matatus (KES 30 to 100) and tuk-tuks (KES 100 to 500, fare agreed first) cover everything; app cabs are the calm option after dark.
In the city
Start at Fort Jesus, the Portuguese star fort built in 1593 to 1596 above the old harbour, UNESCO-listed and the one sight nobody skips — go early, hire a guide at the gate, and read the coast's Portuguese, Omani and British story in one set of walls. Non-resident entry runs about US$18, cards accepted.
From the fort, walk the Old Town: lanes of carved Swahili doors, balconied houses and the Mandhry Mosque. Dress modestly — Mombasa is a largely Muslim city — and ask before photographing people.
Come up for air at the Mama Ngina Waterfront, the promenade over the Likoni channel, then walk Moi Avenue under the aluminium tusks, built in 1952 for a royal visit. Finish in the Marikiti spice market, where trade runs on cardamom and pilipili.
Browse GetYourGuide for guided versions of all of it, and compare Klook when stacking days.
After you land in Mombasa: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa.
Best for the full resort splurge on Bamburi Beach — 340 rooms, five pools and a spa in tropical gardens
Sleep on Bamburi Beach along the Malindi highway, 21 km from the airport — 340 rooms and suites in tropical gardens, five pools, the Tulia Spa and restaurants down to the sand. Book it for the full resort version of the coast.
Best for a lively ship-themed family base on Nyali Beach, close to the island
Stay on Mount Kenya Road in Nyali — a ship-themed resort of 236 cabins in garden and sea-view grades, built like a liner moored off Nyali Beach, with pools and watersports. Book it for a lively family base close to the island.
Best for an island address — small suites hotel, breakfast included
Bed down on Jomo Kenyatta Avenue on Mombasa island — a small suites hotel with cooked-to-order breakfast included; the island's hostels are not on the booking map. Book it for an island address at the honest end of prices.
Pick a side. The island is the base for Fort Jesus, the Old Town and the ferry — atmospheric, busy, short on beach. Nyali and Bamburi, 20 to 30 minutes north, are the beach base: resorts on the sand, the island as a day trip. After a long flight, the north coast is the easier landing.
Book ahead for the December to January peak and Kenyan public holidays, when Nairobi comes to the coast.
Where to eat first
Eat Swahili first: the coast's cooking stacks Arab, Indian and African trade into one plate — pilau and biryani scented with cardamom, coconut curries, charcoal mishkaki skewers, and madafu, drinking coconut, from every second cart. Three first stops:
Tamarind Mombasa, Nyali, off Cement Road.
Book the coast's best-known seafood table — a dhow-lit dining room above Tudor Creek, famous for chilli crab and pweza (octopus) in coconut. The splurge dinner of a Mombasa trip; reserve ahead.
Forodhani Restaurant, Ndia Kuu Road, Old Town.
Eat Swahili classics two lanes from Fort Jesus — biryani days and pilau days, tamarind juice, the Old Town drifting past. Lunch after the fort.
The Marikiti market and Moi Avenue stalls, island centre.
Graze the market run — viazi karai (turmeric potatoes in coconut sauce), roasted maize, sugarcane juice and mahamri, coconut doughnuts sold warm. Carry small notes and agree prices first.

Day trips and more
Three escapes cover the coast at three speeds: the safari dash, the marine-park boat day and the guided city walk. Start early — the heat and, on safari, the animals reward it.
Tsavo East day safari
Eight hours, pick-up included: three hours inland to one of Kenya's largest parks for a game drive among the dust-red elephants of the Galana River and a lodge lunch. Rated 4.2, from about £102, park fees extra. Check availability →
Kisite and Wasini
A private cruise south to Shimoni: sail an hour watching for dolphins, snorkel Kisite Marine Park's coral gardens, eat a Swahili lunch on Wasini Island and walk the Shimoni slave caves. Breakfast on board, rated 4.7, from about £117. Check availability →
The Old Town, Fort Jesus and spice market walk
Three hours on foot with pick-up: the fort with a guide who knows its sieges, the Old Town lanes, the tusks and the spice market, tuk-tuk hops between stops. Rated 4.9, from about £27, fort entry extra. Check availability →
Leave a spare day for Diani Beach, south on the bypass — 40 minutes, no ferry queue — or for Haller Park in Bamburi, the reclaimed quarry turned nature park.
When to go and what it costs
JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec
July to October is the sweet spot: the monsoon cools the coast to the mid-20s and the parks are dry. January to March is hotter and drier still — peak beach season. April and May bring the long rains and flooded roads; the short rains of November and December are lighter and cheaper.
Budget in shillings, at about KES 130 to US$1 (October 2026). A matatu ride is under a dollar; a tuk-tuk hop US$1 to 4; a taxi across town US$5 to 10; a Swahili lunch US$4 to 8, the Tamarind splurge several times that.
A backpacker in a dorm, on market lunches and matatus: US$35 to 50 a day. Mid-range — a Nyali resort room, seafood dinners, a guided day: US$120 to 180 a day. A splurge day with the big resort and a private safari passes US$350.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for heat, humidity and a conservative city: light layers covering shoulders and knees for the Old Town, swim kit for the beach. This is the full list:
Add the Mombasa extras: a Type G adapter, mosquito repellent for the evenings — the coast is a malaria area — reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for the low-tide reef flats, and a light wrap for mosque-adjacent lanes and dhow decks.
Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly
Swahili runs the coast and English runs the hotels, and greetings matter here: take the extra ten seconds, every time.
Four phrases do most of the work:
JambohelloAsantethank youBei gani?how much does it cost?Leta bili, tafadhalithe bill, please
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Kenya scrapped visas for a pre-travel electronic travel authorisation, the eTA: US passport holders apply at etakenya.go.ke, pay US$30, and wait about three working days — apply at least two weeks ahead. Since October 2026 the application also requires Kenyan Government-provided travel health insurance, about US$44, bought as part of the process; a foreign policy does not replace it. The standard eTA covers one entry, must be used within 90 days of issue, and the stay is set at the border. There is no eTA or visa on arrival: airlines check before boarding. East African Community citizens are exempt, and citizens of most other African countries have entered eTA-free since 2025. Your passport needs six months of validity.
Carry a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from, or transit, a country with yellow fever risk — the Ministry of Health asks for it at the border. Direct from the US, UK or Europe, it is not required. The coast is a malaria area, so see a travel clinic about prophylaxis.
Safety and health
Keep Old Town sightseeing to daylight, with a guide or a plan
The centre and Old Town are busy all day; petty theft and phone snatching are the standing risks, so keep the phone pocketed between photos.
Agree every fare before you move
Taxis and tuk-tuks run unmetered — the price is the one settled before the door closes. App cabs quote in the app and are the calm choice after dark.
Swim smart on a reef coast
The reef calms most beaches, but low tide walks out over sharp coral and urchins — wear water shoes, swim at high tide near the hotel beaches, and take local advice on currents.
Take the health basics seriously
Malaria is the coast's real risk: prophylaxis as advised, repellent at dusk, long sleeves in the evening. Drink bottled water, and dial 999 or 112 for anything serious.
The eTA, the causeway run and the base decision, in short.
Entry rules checked against the official eTA portal and UK government travel advice, October 2026; transfer fares against 2026 airport reporting and app route pricing; yellow fever rule against the Kenya Ministry of Health incoming-travellers page.
Rank taxis run KES 1,500 to 2,500 to the island centre, about 30 minutes across the Makupa Causeway off-peak; Bolt, Uber and Little quote about KES 1,200 to 1,800 in the app. Add 15 minutes for Nyali and Bamburi. Matatus from the airport road cost KES 50 to 100 but take no big bags.
An eTA, applied for before travel on etakenya.go.ke: US$30 for a standard single entry, about three working days to process, apply at least two weeks ahead. Since October 2026 the application also requires Kenyan Government-provided travel health insurance (about US$44). No visa or eTA on arrival.
Nyali and Bamburi for a first night: beach at the door, an easier landing, the island a 20 to 30 minute ride away. The island for a culture-first trip — Fort Jesus and the Old Town on foot, no real beach. Diani makes a better second base than an arrival base.
July to October: cooler, drier, the sea settled and the parks dry. January to March is hot, dry peak beach season. April and May are the long rains; November to December brings lighter short rains.
Only if you arrive from, or transit, a country with yellow fever risk — the Ministry of Health asks for the certificate at the border; direct arrivals from the US, UK or Europe do not need one. Malaria is different: the coast is a risk area all year, so ask a travel clinic about prophylaxis.
With normal coastal-city care, yes. Sightsee in the Old Town by day, keep phones pocketed in markets and ferry queues, agree fares before you move, and take app cabs after dark.
Fares change — the ride app quote and the airport rank board always win.
