You have just landed at JKIA, 15 km southeast of a highland capital where lions hunt in a national park against the skyline. This guide covers the Expressway ride in and its real fares, the US$30 eTA to sort before you fly, where to sleep from Karen gardens to a Westlands tower, the first nyama choma, and the park, elephant and Amboseli days that fill day two.

You just landed in Nairobi. JKIA sits about 15 km southeast of the centre — the move is an app cab up the Expressway, about 25 minutes and KES 1,200 to 2,200, with an Airalo eSIM live for ride apps, your US$30 eTA approved before you fly, and the park, elephants and giraffes day worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.
Quick facts
Airport
Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO, JKIA), about 15 km southeast of the centre East Africa's big international hub. Wilson Airport (WIL), south of the centre, handles most domestic and safari flights — check which airport your onward flight uses.
Getting in
App cab KES 1,200 to 2,200, yellow taxi KES 2,500 to 3,000, bus 34 KES 100 Via the Nairobi Expressway an app cab reaches Westlands in about 20 to 25 minutes. The Citi Hoppa bus 34 takes about 75 minutes to the centre.
Currency
Kenyan shilling (KES), about KES 130 to US$1 in October 2026 Cards work at hotels and malls; carry small notes for markets and tips. M-Pesa mobile money runs daily life — visitors can register with a passport on a local SIM.
Languages
English and Swahili, both official English works almost everywhere in Nairobi. Swahili greetings — jambo, asante — are warmly received.
Time zone
East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year Kenya does not change its clocks — The same offset year-round, so safari pickups and domestic flights never shift by an hour.
Emergency
999 or 112 for police, ambulance and fire Both numbers work on Kenyan mobiles. The Kenya Red Cross ambulance line is 1199.
Plugs
Type G sockets, 240 volts British-style three square pins. North American and European plugs need an adapter; UK plugs fit directly.
Tap water
Treated in Nairobi, but most visitors drink bottled or filtered water The city supply is treated, yet hotels filter drinking water as routine and locals often do the same. Refill from the hotel filter, not the tap.
Tourist tax
No per-night city tax a 2% Tourism Fund levy is charged on hotel sales and is normally inside the quoted rate — Licensed hotels remit the 2% levy on gross sales to the Tourism Fund. If a nightly levy appears as a surprise extra, ask what it is.
Best months
June to October and January to February the dry seasons — Long rains fall March to May and short rains October to December. October sits at the turn: mostly dry early, rains building later.

Touch down at JKIA and treat the first hour as admin: the airport sits southeast of a highland city at about 1,700 metres, and one decision — the Expressway — decides whether the ride in takes 25 minutes or over an hour.
Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer Kenya trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
The arrival checklist, in order:
Have your approved eTA and accommodation address on your phone — immigration asks for both
Ride an app cab, the yellow airport taxis or a pre-booked transfer in — never a ride offered by a tout in the hall
Say yes to the Nairobi Expressway when the driver asks: the JKIA to Westlands toll is KES 410 for a saloon car and it skips Mombasa Road traffic
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.
Getting around
Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.
City bus 34 (Citi Hoppa)
Citi Hoppa bus 34 from the airport bus station to Kencom and the Ambassador stop; about every 20 to 30 minutes, 06:00 to 21:00, with many stops — a daylight, light-bags option only

App cab with Uber or Bolt
The app price is quoted before you ride and swings with demand; drivers ask whether to use the Expressway — say yes, the JKIA to Westlands toll is KES 410 for a saloon car, and confirm whether it is inside the quote

Hotel cars and pre-booked private transfers meet you with a name board at a fixed price — the calmest option for a late-night arrival or a Karen base

Nairobi runs on app cabs and matatus, not a metro: matatus are cheap and vivid but hard work with luggage, so most visitors ride Uber, Bolt or Little Cab door to door and walk inside their own neighbourhood. The rides in from JKIA:
Choose the app cab for almost every arrival: the price is quoted before you ride and the Expressway run is fast at any hour. Choose bus 34 only by day, with light bags and a centre hotel. Wilson Airport, for domestic and safari flights, sits about 6 km south of the centre — allow an hour between the two airports, more at rush hour.
Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the airport pickup on AutoEurope first — a rental earns its keep on safari roads, not in city traffic.
In the city
Start where the city started: the centre. Ride to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre rooftop helipad for the whole city in one turn — the park to the south, the hills to the west. Below it, walk City Market for flowers and carvings, the McMillan Memorial Library and the Jamia Mosque, then Uhuru Park's lawns.
Give a morning to the Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill: Kenya's human-origins fossils and the bird hall fill two unhurried hours.
Then go south to the green suburbs. In Langata, feed a Rothschild's giraffe eye-to-eye at the Giraffe Centre, and time the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery for its single public hour, 11 am to noon, when the orphaned elephants come down for milk and mud. In Karen, the Karen Blixen Museum keeps the Out of Africa farmhouse under the Ngong Hills.
Browse GetYourGuide for the park and giraffe days, and compare Klook when stacking activities.
After you land in Nairobi: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Hemingways Nairobi.
Best for the Karen splurge — 45 butler-served suites in gardens between the park and the Ngong Hills
Sleep in Karen, between the park and the Ngong Hills — a 45-suite plantation-style boutique with butler service, a brasserie, a sunset bar and a spa, gardens instead of traffic. Book it for the calm, green version of Nairobi, with safari sights minutes away.
Best for a full-service Westlands base — big rooms and residences above a resort-style pool deck
Stay in Westlands, off Parklands Road — a big orange tower above a resort-style pool deck, with spacious rooms and residences, a spa and several restaurants, and Sarit Centre minutes away. Book it for the full-service Westlands base, with space to spread out after safari days.
Best for budget beds in Westlands — Accor's design-economy tower with a rooftop lounge on Rhapta Road
Bed down on Rhapta Road in Westlands — Accor's design-economy tower, 266 compact rooms under a bright mural, with the Utamu restaurant, the Kilele Nyama roast house and a rooftop lounge. Book it for the honest budget version of the same Westlands base.
Pick the base before the hotel. Westlands is the first-night pick for most visitors: malls, restaurants and app cabs on every corner, an easy Expressway run from JKIA and a lively street feel after dark. Karen, in the leafy south, suits safari mornings — the park gate, Giraffe Centre and Wilson Airport are close, and nights are quiet. The centre is cheapest and closest to the museums, but it empties after business hours, so ride, not walk, after dark.
Book ahead for July to October, when safari season fills the good rooms. Confirm the quoted total is the total — the 2% tourism levy belongs inside the rate.
Where to eat first
Eat nyama choma first: meat roasted over charcoal, cut on a board and eaten with ugali, kachumbari salad and your hands. Around it sit the other first tastes — Kenyan coffee, some of the world's best, and a century of Indian-Kenyan cooking. Three first stops:
Carnivore, Langata Road, near Wilson Airport.
Eat at the famous all-you-can-eat grill, where roasted meats come off swords until you lower your table flag. A Nairobi institution since 1980; book dinner ahead.
The Village Market food courts, Gigiri.
Graze the diplomatic quarter's open-air mall — Kenyan grills, Indian thalis and coffee bars in one easy, walkable complex. The softest landing for a first evening meal.
City Market and the centre lunch counters.
Eat where the centre eats at midday: grilled tilapia, pilau and githeri beans at counters priced for office workers. Go at lunch, when the centre is at its busiest and best.
For food tours and market walks, browse the Nairobi listings on GetYourGuide.
Day trips and more
Three escapes cover Nairobi's range: the park inside the city, the elephants under Kilimanjaro, and the centre on foot. Carry water and a layer — mornings start cold at altitude.

Amboseli National Park and a Maasai village
A long day, about 14 hours with a 4:30 am start: big elephant herds on the dry lake bed, Kilimanjaro filling the morning sky, and a Maasai village visit on the way back. Rated 4.5 from recent reviews, from about US$90. Check availability →
Downtown walking tour

Leave a spare day for Karura Forest's waterfalls and caves, or the Maasai Mara by air from Wilson.
When to go and what it costs
The dry seasons are the safari seasons: June to October is long and dry, with the Maasai Mara migration in country, and January to February is short, hot and dry. The long rains, March to May, close some park tracks and cut prices; the short rains from late October bring green grass and fewer visitors. Altitude keeps Nairobi days near 25°C and evenings cool in every month.
Budget in shillings, at about KES 130 to US$1 in October 2026. An app cab across town runs KES 500 to 1,000; a matatu ride KES 50 to 100; a centre lunch KES 600 to 1,200; a nyama choma dinner with a beer US$15 to 25 a person.
A budget traveller in a compact Westlands room, on matatus and lunch counters: US$45 to 70 a day. Mid-range — a Westlands hotel, app cabs, one park day: US$120 to 180 a day. A splurge day with the Karen boutique and a private car passes US$350, before any Mara flights.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for altitude sun and two seasons in a day — a cold dawn game drive can end in a warm afternoon. This is the full list:
Add the Nairobi extras: a Type G adapter, a warm fleece for 6 am game drives and Karen evenings, and neutral colours for park days. In the short rains the rain jacket earns its place every afternoon.
Language, visa and entry
! Check visa requirements before you fly
English and Swahili run the city side by side — signs, menus and safaris in English, greetings and daily warmth in Swahili. Nairobi is a working capital first and a safari gateway second: business dress downtown, matatus loud with music, coffee taken seriously.
JambohelloAsantethank youHabarihow are youBei gani?how much is it?
Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Kenya replaced the old eVisa with an Electronic Travel Authorisation: US passport holders — and most other visitors — must apply at the official etakenya.go.ke portal before travel and be approved before boarding. The standard eTA costs US$30, processing usually takes about three working days, and the official advice is to apply at least two weeks ahead. It allows a single entry; the length of stay is set at the border.
Your passport needs six months of validity beyond arrival. East African Community citizens are exempt from the eTA. There is no visa on arrival to fall back on — an unapproved application means not flying.
Safety and health
Read the current advisory before you go, and plan around it
The US State Department renewed its Kenya advisory on 19 October 2026 at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing health, crime, kidnapping, terrorism, unrest and traffic safety, and lists Nairobi's Eastleigh and Kibera neighbourhoods as Do Not Travel. Check it again before departure, follow any health screening in force at JKIA, and let it shape where you base and how you move.
Ride app cabs after dark, and skip walking in the centre at night
Westlands, Kilimani and Karen stay active into the evening; the centre empties after offices close. Use Uber, Bolt or a hotel car door to door after dark anywhere in the city.
Guard your phone — snatching is the everyday crime
Phones are taken from hands on pavements, from café tables and through open taxi windows, and pickpockets work crowded matatus and markets. Keep the phone in a pocket between uses and leave the passport and spare cards in the hotel safe.
Take altitude, sun and roads seriously
At about 1,700 metres the sun burns faster than it feels and dawns are cold — sunscreen, water and a layer every day. Buckle up, avoid intercity roads at night, and build slack into every transfer. For anything serious, dial 999 or 112.
The Expressway run, the eTA and the two-airport trap, in short.
Transfers and Expressway toll checked against 2026 JKIA transfer reporting and the revised Gazette Notice 17419 toll table, October 2026; entry against the official Kenya eTA portal; safety against the US advisory renewed 19 October 2026.
An app cab with Uber or Bolt: KES 1,200 to 2,200, about 25 minutes via the Nairobi Expressway (the JKIA to Westlands toll is KES 410 for a saloon car). The official yellow taxis outside arrivals run KES 2,500 to 3,000. Bus 34 (Citi Hoppa) is KES 100 and takes about 75 minutes to the centre.
Before you travel: Kenya replaced the eVisa with an Electronic Travel Authorisation. US passport holders apply at etakenya.go.ke, pay US$30, and should allow about three working days — the official advice is to apply at least two weeks ahead. Airlines check the approval at check-in; there is no visa on arrival.
Westlands for a first night: restaurants, malls and app cabs everywhere, and an easy Expressway run from JKIA. Karen for safari mornings — the park gate, Giraffe Centre and Wilson Airport are close and nights are quiet. The centre is cheapest, but it empties after dark, so ride rather than walk at night.
Read the current advisory and plan around it: the US State Department renewed Kenya at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, on 19 October 2026, and lists Eastleigh and Kibera as Do Not Travel. In the usual visitor bases, the everyday risks are phone snatching and pickpocketing — ride app cabs after dark and keep phones in a pocket.
June to October and January to February, the dry seasons. The Maasai Mara migration is in country in the long dry season. Long rains fall March to May; short rains build from late October into December, when the city is greener and prices soften.
Often, yes. JKIA is the international gateway, but most domestic and safari flights — the Mara, the coast, Amboseli — leave from Wilson Airport, about 6 km south of the centre. The two airports are a 30 to 60 minute drive apart depending on traffic, so never book a tight self-connection between them.
Shilling fares move with demand — your ride app and the official eTA portal always win.
