The short version

You just landed in Ouro Preto. There is no airport here — you arrive through Belo Horizonte, 140 km away, on two buses for about R$82 or a direct Uber for about R$280, with an Airalo eSIM live for the mountain road, a hotel chosen for its hill as much as its rooms, and the baroque churches and gold mines worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
None in Ouro Preto Belo Horizonte Confins (CNF) is the gateway, about 140 km by road — Most international arrivals connect through São Paulo or Rio to Confins. Pampulha (PLU) handles regional flights only. The last leg is always by road.
Getting in
Two buses about R$82 via Belo Horizonte, Uber direct about R$280, 2.5 to 3.5 hours Conexão Aeroporto runs from Confins to Belo Horizonte Rodoviária, where the Pássaro Verde coach leaves hourly for Ouro Preto. Uber quotes the whole run direct.
Currency
Brazilian real (R$) Cards and Pix work almost everywhere; carry cash for church entry fees, the soapstone fair and small cafés.
Languages
Portuguese English is patchy outside hotels and tour offices; Spanish is widely understood, and a few Portuguese phrases go a long way.
Time zone
Brasília time (UTC-3), no daylight saving Brazil abolished daylight saving in 2019, so the offset stays at UTC-3 all year.
Emergency
190 police, 192 ambulance, 193 fire 192 reaches SAMU, the public ambulance service; public hospitals treat emergencies regardless of insurance.
Plugs
Type N sockets; voltage varies between 127V and 220V Minas Gerais buildings run on both voltages, sometimes in the same town — check the label on the socket before plugging in anything that is not dual-voltage.
Tap water
Treated, but most locals filter it The town supply meets potability standards; most homes and hotels still filter drinking water, and visitors usually do the same.
Tourist tax
None no per-night visitor tax — Ouro Preto charges no separate lodging levy. The ISS services tax is folded into the hotel rate you are quoted, not added per night.
Best months
April to October the dry season, with mild days and cool nights — December to March is the wet season. Semana Santa and Carnaval fill the town and multiply room prices.

Settle in

Ouro Preto has no airport, so your first hour starts on a bus or in a car in Belo Horizonte, about 140 km away. Treat the journey in as part of the arrival: mountain highway, then a town on hills so steep that your hotel's exact street matters as much as its stars. Ask which ladeira (slope) it sits on before you book — a pousada at the top of the wrong hill is a climb with luggage, every day.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the Confins arrivals hall. For a longer Brazil trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

A steep cobbled lane between colonial houses in Ouro Preto

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Two buses via Belo Horizonte

Conexão Aeroporto conventional bus from Confins to Belo Horizonte Rodoviária (about R$16.80, about 50 minutes), then the hourly Pássaro Verde coach south (R$65.20); buy the second ticket at the Rodoviária counter or online and keep the connection loose

Priceabout R$82Journeyabout 3 hrs 30 min

Pássaro Verde bus (the Ouro Preto leg)

Hourly from about 06:00 to midnight from Belo Horizonte Rodoviária, stopping at Itabirito; the return leg costs R$59.65 — terminal fees make the directions differ; Ouro Preto Rodoviária sits below the centre, a short taxi from most hotels

PriceR$65.20Journeyabout 2 hrs 30 min

App ride with Uber

Uber's own route page averages about R$278 to R$280 and 156 minutes for Confins to Ouro Preto; the price is quoted in the app before you ride and swings with demand; the direct ride skips the Belo Horizonte change entirely

Priceabout R$280Journeyabout 2 hrs 35 min

Inside Terminal 2 at Belo Horizonte Confins International Airport, the gateway for Ouro Preto

Every arrival funnels through Belo Horizonte: Confins (CNF) for almost everyone, Pampulha (PLU) for regional flights, then the Rodoviária for the coach south:

Choose the buses with light bags and a daytime landing; choose the direct Uber late at night. In town there is no metro and little need for one: the centre is compact, local buses link the neighbourhoods, and Uber and 99 work for the climbs you do not want to walk. The scenic Trem da Vale train runs to Mariana on weekends and holidays — check the Vale timetable first.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the Confins pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep on Mariana and Congonhas days; old-town parking is tight.

In the city

Start on Praça Tiradentes: the Inconfidência Museum in the old council and jail building, the Tiradentes monument, and streets falling away on every side. The museum is the right first hour indoors — gold, conspiracy and the 1789 plot for independence, in one building.

Walk down to the Church of São Francisco de Assis, the masterpiece of Brazilian baroque: Aleijadinho's soapstone carvings outside, Mestre Ataíde's painted ceiling inside. Face it with the soapstone fair, where carvers still work the local stone. Cross to the Casa dos Contos, the old smelting and tax house, for the money side of the gold story — entry is free. End at the Basílica do Pilar, the town's richest church, heavy with gold leaf.

Go underground at least once: the Mina da Passagem, on the road to Mariana, descends by trolley into a vast old gold mine with an underground lake; the Palácio Velho mine does the walk-in version inside town.

Do this, skip that.

Climb to São Francisco de Paula at golden hour for the panorama, book a guided walk for the church stories, and ride the weekend train to Mariana. Skip heels and smooth soles — the cobbles are polished and steep — skip driving the centre's one-way lanes, and skip midday hill climbs in summer; mornings and late afternoons are the walking hours.

Browse GetYourGuide for walks and day trips, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

After you land in Ouro Preto: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Hotel Solar do Rosário.
Splurge

Hotel Solar do Rosário.

Best for the full-service splurge — a 19th-century casarão in Rosário with a heated pool and gardens

Sleep in a 19th-century casarão at Rua Getúlio Vargas 270, in Rosário — 38 rooms around gardens, a heated pool and suites with Victorian tubs. Praça Tiradentes is minutes away on the quarter's gentler slope. Book it for the fullest version of Ouro Preto polish.

Grande Hotel de Ouro Preto.
Mid-range

Grande Hotel de Ouro Preto.

Best for design lovers — Niemeyer's 1940 modernist landmark above Praça Tiradentes

Stay in Oscar Niemeyer's 1940 modernist landmark at Rua Senador Rocha Lagoa 164, curving above Praça Tiradentes — one of the architect's earliest works, with a panoramic restaurant terrace. Book it for the building as much as the bed.

History Hostel.
Budget

History Hostel.

Best for hostel beds in the historic centre — five minutes from Praça Tiradentes

Bed down at Rua Bernardo Vasconcellos 117 in the historic centre — a true hostel five minutes from Praça Tiradentes. Book it for budget beds inside the baroque streets.

Base near Praça Tiradentes for a first visit, but read the slope before the star rating: Rosário, west of the square, is gentler ground; Antônio Dias, below São Francisco de Assis, is prettier and steeper. The question is how many climbs a day you want.

Book ahead for Semana Santa, Carnaval and the July winter festival, when prices spike. Confirm the quoted total is the total — ISS is inside the rate, no tourist tax to add.

Where to eat first

A mineira table in clay pans — beans, rice and slow-cooked meat

Eat mineiro on day one: Minas Gerais cooking is Brazil's comfort canon — feijão tropeiro (beans with cassava flour, sausage and greens), tutu de feijão, frango com quiabo (chicken with okra), pão de queijo still warm, and doce de leite to finish. Lunch is the main meal; many kitchens close mid-afternoon. Three first stops:

Bené da Flauta, beside the São Francisco de Assis church.

Eat at the town's classic special-occasion table, in a colonial house facing the masterpiece — mineira standards, served unhurried. Book for weekends.

Casa do Ouvidor, in the centre.

Sit down to the traditional mineira spread in one of the old town's best-known dining rooms — tropeiro beans, tutu and slow meats, portions built for sharing. Arrive at lunch, when the menu is fullest.

O Passo Pizzajazz, near the Rosário.

Graze the relaxed version: pizzas, jazz and a terrace crowd of students and travellers. Start early on festival nights.

Day trips and more

Three escapes cover the gold country at three speeds: the first capital 25 minutes away, the guided deep-dive into Ouro Preto itself, and the multi-day Estrada Real loop. Note the pattern: most guided day tours in Minas Gerais depart Belo Horizonte, so the guided versions suit a Belo Horizonte night at either end — from Ouro Preto itself, Mariana is the easy do-it-yourself trip.

The twin churches of Praça Minas Gerais in Mariana, Minas Gerais's first capital

Mariana

The Basílica of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos at Congonhas, with Aleijadinho's prophets on the terrace

Congonhas and the historic cities

Seven days, private group of up to seven, from Rio de Janeiro: Belo Horizonte and the Inhotim open-air museum, nights in Ouro Preto and Congonhas — for Aleijadinho's twelve soapstone prophets — then Tiradentes and São João del Rei. Leave a spare half-day for Lavras Novas, the quilombo village in the hills south of town, or the Itacolomi waterfalls between Ouro Preto and Mariana.

When to go and what it costs

Ouro Preto at sunset, church towers above the rooftops

April to October is the dry season and the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights at over 1,100 metres, clear hill light. December to March brings the rains — cobbles turn slick and afternoon storms are routine. Two dates break the pattern: Semana Santa, with its processions and sawdust carpets, and Carnaval, among Brazil's most beloved street parties. Both multiply room prices; October sits outside both spikes.

A backpacker in a dorm, on market lunches and local buses: R$250 to R$350 a day. Mid-range — a historic-centre room, restaurant dinners, one guided day: R$600 to R$900 a day. A splurge day passes R$1,500. Church entry fees run about R$10 to R$20 each; carry small bills.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for hills, altitude sun and a town where the street is the workout. This is the full list:

Add the Ouro Preto extras: shoes with real grip — wet cobbles on a steep slope are the town's one true hazard — a warm layer for evenings at altitude, and small cash for church fees and the soapstone fair. A Type N adapter matters: sockets are the three-pin Brazilian standard, and the voltage changes by building.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

The facade of the Church of São Francisco de Assis, Ouro Preto's baroque masterpiece

Portuguese runs everything, and Minas runs it warmly: greet first (bom dia, boa tarde after midday, boa noite in the evening), and expect people to slow down and help. A university town layered over Brazil's most storied colonial past: the gold cycle, the 1789 Inconfidência conspiracy and Tiradentes, its martyred hero, whose square you will cross daily.

Four phrases do most of the work:

OláhelloObrigadothank youPor favorpleaseQuanto custa?how much is it

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. Since 10 April 2025, citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia need an electronic visa eVisa before travel, applied for online through the official VFS portal, at US$80.90 for US citizens. Airlines check it at boarding; there is no visa on arrival. UK and most EU citizens still enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

Carry your passport for the eVisa check and hotel check-in, keep a phone photo of it, and keep proof of onward travel handy — border officers can ask.

Safety and health

Mind the hills and the wet cobbles first

The real injury risk is a fall: streets run at steep grades, the stone is polished smooth, and rain makes it treacherous. Wear grippy shoes, use handrails where they exist, and taxi the big climbs with luggage or after dark.

Expect quiet streets after dark

Ouro Preto is one of Brazil's calmer historic towns, but the centre empties late and lanes are dim between squares. Walk the lit main streets, keep the phone in a pocket between photos, and ride Uber or 99 back up the hill.

Guard your kit in festival crowds

Semana Santa and Carnaval pack the centre shoulder to shoulder, and pickpockets work the processions. Keep valuables in a front pocket or zipped daypack, and leave the passport in the hotel safe.

Respect altitude, sun and the mines

At over 1,100 metres the sun burns faster than it feels, and mine tours run cool underground — carry water and wear the layer you packed. For anything serious, dial 192 for an ambulance.

Frequently asked questions

The Belo Horizonte arrival, the eVisa and the hills, in short.

Fares checked against Pássaro Verde operator figures in September 2026 local reporting and Uber's Confins to Ouro Preto route page, October 2026; entry rules against the official Brazil eVisa portal and 2026 consular guidance.

There is no airport in Ouro Preto. Fly to Belo Horizonte Confins (CNF), ride the Conexão Aeroporto bus to Belo Horizonte Rodoviária (about R$16.80), then the hourly Pássaro Verde coach to Ouro Preto (R$65.20) — about 3.5 hours, R$82 in total. An Uber runs direct for about R$280 in about 2 hours 35 minutes.

Only marginally. Pampulha (PLU), inside Belo Horizonte, takes regional flights and still leaves you the same Rodoviária coach or a 100 km drive. For almost everyone Confins is the gateway, and the last leg is by road either way.

US, Canadian and Australian citizens have needed an eVisa since 10 April 2025 — apply online through the official VFS portal before travel (US$80.90 for US citizens); airlines check at boarding. UK and most EU citizens enter visa-free for 90 days.

April to October, the dry season: warm days, cool nights and clear light on the hills. December to March is wet, with slick cobbles. Semana Santa and Carnaval are the town's great festivals — and its highest prices.

Very — the centre is a bowl of steep cobbled ladeiras, and your hotel's slope decides your day. Rosário is the gentler ground; Antônio Dias is prettier and steeper. Wear grippy shoes, and taxi the big climbs with luggage.

It is one of Brazil's calmer historic towns, and the centre is walked late. The real risks are falls on polished wet cobbles and pickpockets in Semana Santa and Carnaval crowds; after dark the side lanes empty, so walk the lit streets and ride back up the hill.

Fares change — the Pássaro Verde counter and your ride app always win.
