The short version

You just landed in Taormina. There is no airport here — the gateway is Catania–Fontanarossa, 55 km south, and the move is the €7 direct coach to the Via Pirandello terminal, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps and timetables, the cable car waiting for the beach drop, and the Etna and boat days that sell out first worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Catania–Fontanarossa (CTA), about 55 km south Taormina has no airport of its own — Sicily's busiest airport. A direct coach, a train and shuttle, or a pre-booked car complete the climb to town.
Getting in
Direct coach €7 in about 85 minutes, train and shuttle about €8 in about 90 minutes The coach ends at the Via Pirandello terminal, inside town. The train stops below at Taormina-Giardini — budget the shuttle up.
Currency
Euro (EUR), about €1 to US$1.12 in October 2026 Cards work across the Corso; carry cash for the tourist tax at small properties and beach clubs.
Languages
Italian, with Sicilian widely spoken at home and in the markets Hotel and tour staff work in English; drivers and granita bars run on Italian.
Time zone
Central European Time (UTC+1), summer time (UTC+2) from late March to late October The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October — Sunday 25 October in 2026.
Emergency
112 for police, ambulance and fire anywhere in Italy and the EU The single European emergency number works from any phone.
Plugs
Type C, F and L sockets, 230 volts The three-pin Type L is common in older buildings; most hotels also take the europlug. UK and US plugs need an adapter.
Tap water
Safe to drink in Taormina the town supply is treated and locals drink it — Refill at the hotel before Etna days — on the volcano, carry everything you will drink.
Tourist tax
Per-comune tassa di soggiorno, €1 to €5 per person per night by category, capped at 10 nights, under-12s exempt There is no regional Sicily tax — each comune sets its own. Your property collects it, often in cash.
Best months
April to June and September to October warm seas, open beach clubs, thinner crowds — July and August are hottest, busiest and dearest. Winter is mild and quiet, with some services paused.

Settle in

Taormina has no airport, so the first hour is a transfer, not a stroll: you land at Catania–Fontanarossa (CTA), about 55 km south, and climb to a hilltop town of one main street.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and coach timetables work from arrivals. For a longer Italy trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Trains from CTA's Fontanarossa station to Taormina-Giardini (about €7), then the shuttle bus (€1.10, 10 to 15 minutes) climbs to the terminal — the station itself sits at sea level, below the town

Private transfer or taxi

Pre-booked cars quote a fixed price per car (listings run about €100 to €150); a name board waits in arrivals — confirm the fixed price before you ride, as taxi estimates run far higher

The check-in hall at Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, Sicily's busiest terminal

Taormina is one walkable street — Corso Umberto, pedestrianised through the old town gates — plus a vertical problem: the beaches and station sit far below. The cable car solves the beach drop, and the CTA run has one budget anchor, the direct coach. The rides in from CTA:

Choose the coach with light bags and a daytime arrival — it ends inside town, walkable to most hotels. After the last evening coach, a pre-booked car is the only simple option.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep on Etna days, not in the limited-traffic old town, with car parks at Lumbi and Porta Catania.

In town, the funivia cable car runs from Via Pirandello to Mazzarò every 15 minutes — €8 single, €15 return, about three minutes — for Mazzarò beach and the steps to Isola Bella. Summer hours run to 01:30; winter ends about 20:00.

In the city

Walk Corso Umberto end to end first, Porta Messina to Porta Catania, to learn the town's single spine — Palazzo Corvaja at the north end, the Duomo at the south, Piazza IX Aprile at the centre, its terrace hanging over the bay.

Visit the Teatro Antico before the crowds.

The Greek theatre, begun in the third century BC and rebuilt by the Romans, seats its audience facing the sea and the volcano at once. Full entry is €16 in 2026 (reduced €9) — the price currently carries a major exhibition; the standard rate outside it is €14. Go at opening, 9am, or late in the day.

Ride the cable car down to Isola Bella.

From Mazzarò, steps drop to the pebble bar joining the island reserve to the shore — wade across at low tide and swim the clear water beyond. Beach clubs rent loungers; free strips fill by mid-morning in summer.

Climb to the Madonna della Rocca and the castle.

The stepped path above town reaches the rock-cut chapel and, higher, the Saracen castle terrace — coast, theatre and Etna in one frame. Start early or late; there is no shade.

Take an evening passeggiata like a local.

Join the slow circuit of the Corso after dinner — a granita or a glass of Etna Bianco on Piazza IX Aprile, the Duomo floodlit. Taormina performs best at this hour, when the day-trip coaches have gone.

Browse GetYourGuide for theatre tickets and Etna departures, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Hotel Villa Schuler.

Best for garden calm in the middle of town — a family-run villa hotel since 1905

Stay at Piazzetta Bastione, Via Roma 2, two minutes from Piazza IX Aprile — a family-run villa hotel since 1905, wrapped in botanical gardens, with breakfast on the Palm Terrace facing Etna and the bay. Book it for garden calm in the middle of town.

Hotel Continental.
Budget

Hotel Continental.

Best for an in-town budget base beside the Duomo, with a big sun terrace over the bay

Bed down at Via Dionisio I 2a, beside the Duomo — a simple three-star with a big sun terrace over the bay, a garden and a beach shuttle. Book it for an in-town address at the centre's gentlest price.

Base on or just off Corso Umberto on a first visit — everything here is a short walk. Mazzarò, below, suits a beach-first stay with the cable car as your lift; Giardini Naxos, the next town along the bay, is cheaper and flatter, but a bus ride away, not Taormina itself. Taormina is premium-priced at every level — book early.

Book ahead for May, June and September. Expect the tourist tax on top of the rate — €1 to €5 per person per night by category, capped at 10 nights.

Where to eat first

A seafood stall at a Sicilian market, red trays of shellfish and the morning catch

Eat Sicilian, in order: granita for breakfast, arancini standing up, one long seafood dinner. The Corso terraces charge for the view — the same cooking costs less one street back. Three first stops:

Bam Bar, Via di Giovanni 45, just off the Corso.

Start the day the Sicilian way — granita with a warm brioche col tuppo for dunking. The almond, coffee and fruit granitas here are the town benchmark; arrive before the mid-morning queue.

Da Cristina, Via Strabone 2, near Porta Messina.

Grab arancini from the rosticceria counter the town queues at — ragù or ham and cheese, eaten hot on the street. The best-value lunch in the centre.

Trattoria da Nino, Via L. Pirandello 37, toward the cable car.

Eat pasta alla Norma, swordfish and Etna wines at a family trattoria away from the Corso terraces — book dinner in season.

For cooking classes and food walks, browse the Taormina listings on GetYourGuide.

Day trips and more

Three escapes cover Taormina's day range: the volcano and its gorge, the coast by boat, and the volcano again slowly, with wine. Carry water and a layer — Etna runs cold year-round.

The Alcantara Gorge, its basalt walls carved by the cold river

Etna and the Alcantara Gorges

A full day with lunch and pickup around Taormina: the Ragabo forest and 2002 lava front, a walk to the Sartorius craters, a lava cave with helmet and torch, then the Alcantara Gorges, where the river runs cold through basalt columns. Check availability →

The rocky headland and clear water at Isola Bella, below Taormina

Taormina boat tour with snorkelling and Prosecco

Two hours from Giardini Naxos port, rated 4.8 from over 1,100 reviews: the Grotta dell'Amore and Blue Grotto, a swim stop in the Isola Bella reserve, and Prosecco with Sicilian sweets on board. From about US$43. Check availability →

Vines on the slopes of Mount Etna at Passopisciaro, north of Taormina

Mount Etna tour with wine tasting and lunch

Seven hours, small group of eight at most, pickup in Taormina: lateral craters near 2,000 metres, an ancient lava tunnel, then lunch and a tasting at a slope winery. Rated 4.9, from about US$163. Check availability →

Leave a spare half-day for Castelmola, the village on the pinnacle above town — almond wine on a terrace, castle ruins, Taormina below.

When to go and what it costs

Corso Umberto, Taormina's main street, in the morning light

April to June and September to October are the sweet spot: the sea is swimmable, the theatre and beach clubs are open, and the Corso breathes again after August. July and August bring real heat and the highest rates. Winter days are mild — often fine for the theatre and Etna's lower slopes — but boat tours thin out and some hotels close.

Budget in euro; the anchor is about €1 to US$1.12 (October 2026). The coach is €7; the cable car €8 single; theatre entry €16; a granita breakfast about €5; a trattoria dinner with Etna Bianco €30 to 45 a person — double it on a Corso terrace.

A budget day, on rosticceria lunches and the coach: €70 to 100. Mid-range — a garden hotel, a boat morning, trattoria dinners: €180 to 260. A splurge day with the convent palace and a private Etna day passes €600.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for a vertical town, a pebble shore and a cold volcano — one day can hold all three:

Add the Taormina extras: swim shoes for the pebbles at Isola Bella and Mazzarò, a warm layer for Etna even in August, and a Type C, F and L adapter.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

The stage wall of the Teatro Antico, Taormina's Greek and Roman theatre

Italian runs the town, Sicilian runs its kitchens — starting with granita and arancinu, the words for breakfast and lunch. English is everywhere on the Corso; a few Italian phrases still change every exchange.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Buongiornogood morningGraziethank youQuanto costa?how much does it cost?Il conto, per favorethe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US, Canadian, British, Australian and New Zealand nationals, and most others, enter Italy and the Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. Passports need at least three months beyond your departure date.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 — expect fingerprint and photo registration at your first Schengen border instead of a stamp. ETIAS is not operating yet: there is no pre-travel authorisation to buy for Italy in 2026.

Safety and health

Guard the small thefts, not the big fears

The old town is busy and walked late; the real risks are pickpocketing in theatre and cable-car queues and at the bus terminal. Keep the phone in a pocket between photos and use the hotel safe.

Respect the volcano's rules

Etna is active: access above about 2,500 metres is legally limited to groups with a certified guide, and INGV bulletins close areas when activity rises. Book guided days and never walk past a closure sign for a photograph.

Swim where the locals swim

Isola Bella and Mazzarò are pebble bays with deep water close in — enter carefully in swim shoes, mind boat lanes outside the marked areas, and treat the Alcantara water as cold in every month. Summer heat on the theatre's stone seats is real: carry water and a hat.

Agree every fare before you ride

Coach and train fares are published; taxis are not always so. Confirm the fixed price for an airport car first, keep small notes for the tourist tax, and dial 112 for anything serious.

Taormina questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The climb from Catania, the cable car and the taxes, in short.

Fares checked against the coach operators' booking system and ASM listings, October 2026; theatre price against the park's 2026 listing; entry rules against the EES and ETIAS status in force in 2026.

Take the direct Interbus and Etna Trasporti coach: €7, about 85 minutes, straight to the Via Pirandello terminal in town. Or ride the train to Taormina-Giardini station below town, then the €1.10 shuttle up.

At sea level below the hilltop town, on the coast road toward Giardini Naxos. Shuttle buses meet the trains for the 10 to 15 minute climb to the terminal — do not set out on foot with luggage.

€1 to €5 per person per night by category, capped at 10 nights, under-12s exempt — a per-comune tassa di soggiorno, not a Sicily regional tax. One in-town hotel currently states a flat €4, so ask your property which rate applies.

Ride the funivia from Via Pirandello to Mazzarò — €8 single, €15 return, every 15 minutes — then walk the steps down to Isola Bella. Summer hours run to 01:30; winter ends about 20:00.

April to June and September to October: warm sea, open beach clubs, the theatre in season and far thinner crowds than August. Winter is mild and quiet, with some hotels and boat tours paused.

No — ETIAS is not operating yet. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, so expect fingerprint and photo registration at your first Schengen border instead of a passport stamp.

Fares change — the coach operators, ASM Taormina and the park always win.

Transfers against the operators' own booking system, read in 2026: the direct coach (lines ET07 and IN14, one service under two brands) is €7, scheduled 80 to 90 minutes; other guides quote €8 to €10 and 75 to 105 minutes — the guide prints €7 and 85 minutes. Train times conflict (about 50 minutes to 1 hour 14 to Taormina-Giardini, plus the €1.10 shuttle); the guide prints about 90 minutes in total. Private cars conflict: pre-booked transfers list about €100 to €150, a major journey planner quotes €180 to €220 for a taxi — the guide prints "from about €130". Tourist tax: the band is listed at €1 (other accommodation) to €5 (five-star), capped at 10 nights, under-12s exempt; one in-town hotel's 2026 FAQ instead states a flat €4, and earlier Sicily research read €2.50 to €5 — printed, not resolved.
