Trujillo, Peru: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Pinillos, 10 km northwest of the plaza — Trujillo, Peru's north-coast city of eternal spring, set between two dead capitals: Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the Americas, and the Moche pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. This guide covers the agreed-fare taxi in, where to sleep, the 18% IGV foreign guests skip, the first shambar and ceviche, and the guided days that string the ruins and Huanchaco's reed boats together.

The short version

You just landed in Trujillo. The airport sits 10 km northwest of the plaza — the move is the official taxi at an agreed S/25 to 40, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps and ride apps, the 18% IGV gone from your hotel bill as a foreign guest, and the archaeology days that fill first — Chan Chan and the Huacas with Huanchaco to finish — worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos (TRU), about 10 km northwest of the centre A domestic airport: every flight connects through Lima, about 1 hour 15 minutes away. There are no direct international flights.
Getting in
Official taxi S/25 to 40, app cab about S/25, 20 to 30 minutes Taxis agree the fare before you ride — no meters. The combi stop sits about a mile from the terminal, so it is no luggage option.
Currency
Peruvian sol (S/, PEN), about S/3.44 to US$1 in October 2026 Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants; carry soles in cash for taxis, combis, markets and site tickets, which are cash-first.
Languages
Spanish; English in the bigger hotels and on guided tours Drivers, combis and neighbourhood restaurants run on Spanish — the phrase chips below cover the essentials.
Time zone
Peru Time (UTC-5) all year Peru does not change its clocks — The whole country keeps one time zone, so domestic flight and bus times never shift.
Emergency
105 for police, 116 for fire, 106 for an ambulance Save the numbers before you need them and keep your insurer's line on your phone. Hotels will also call a trusted taxi at any hour.
Plugs
Type A and Type C sockets, 220 volts Flat US-style plugs fit Type A directly. Most phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage; single-voltage 110V appliances need a converter.
Tap water
Do not drink it straight from the tap use bottled or filtered water — Hotels provide filtered water or sell bottles cheaply. Brushing teeth with it is generally fine.
Tourist tax
No city lodging tax and foreign guests skip the 18% IGV on hotel rooms for short stays — Show your passport and your digital TAM entry record at check-in and pay the hotel directly; stays must stay under 60 days to qualify.
Best months
Year-round mild December to April is warmest and sunniest, with the Marinera festival in late January — June to September is cooler and greyer on the coast. Strong El Niño years can bring rare heavy rain to the north coast, usually between December and April.

Settle in

Touch down at Pinillos and treat the first hour as admin: the airport sits 10 km northwest, and one decision — the agreed taxi fare — runs the ride in.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and ride apps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer Peru trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist, in order:

If a cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Official airport taxi

The authorised rank outside arrivals; fares are agreed before you ride because Trujillo taxis have no meters — confirm the price in soles and ignore touts inside the hall

App cab with Uber or inDrive

Uber and inDrive both work in Trujillo; the price is quoted in the app before you ride — meet at the pick-up area and check the plate before you get in

Priceabout S/25 (about US$7)Journeyabout 25 min

Pre-booked private transfer

A driver waits in arrivals with a name board and one piece of luggage per person is included; book with your flight number so the driver tracks delays

Combi (local minibus)

Combis for Huanchaco and the centre pass on the main road about a mile from the terminal entrance — a local's shortcut with no luggage room, not an arrival option with bags

PriceS/2 to 3 (about US$1)Journeyabout 45 min

The white terminal and control tower of Trujillo's Pinillos Airport, with the ADP Trujillo sign on the facade

The centre is flat and walkable; everything else fans out by taxi and combi: Chan Chan 5 km west, the Huacas 8 km southeast, Huanchaco 12 km northwest. There is no airport bus — the rides in from TRU:

Choose the official taxi or app cab with luggage — always. The combi passes about a mile from the terminal, a local's shortcut, not an arrival option. Mototaxis work the outer districts: agree the fare first, expect no helmet, and skip them for the airport run and after dark.

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep on El Brujo days, not in the centre.

In town, combis run about S/1.50 to 2 and taxis S/5 to 10 for centre hops; both are cash. Huanchaco is S/2 to 3 by combi, S/15 to 25 by taxi.

In the city

Start at the Plaza de Armas: the yellow Cathedral, the Liberty monument, and republican mansions in blue, pink and ochre. Step into the Casa de la Emancipación, where Trujillo declared independence in 1820, and the Casa Urquiaga, which hosted Bolívar.

Walk the Nik An palace at Chan Chan.

Ride 5 km west to the largest adobe city in the Americas, the Chimú capital, UNESCO-listed since 1986. One S/10 ticket covers the site museum, the Nik An palace, Huaca Esmeralda and Huaca Arco Iris, Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm. Gate guides cost extra and earn it — the walls carry almost no signage.

Hear the murals at Huaca de la Luna.

Cross to the Moche valley, 8 km southeast, where the Moon temple's polychrome reliefs — warriors, spiders and the god Ai Apaec — survive in stacked layers. Entry S/10, the museum S/5 more, Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm, on the site's guided tours only; the Sun temple is viewed from outside.

Watch marinera where it is danced best.

Trujillo is Peru's marinera capital: couples circle with white handkerchiefs, never touching, to cajón and guitar. Catch a show any week, or time the trip for the national contest in late January.

Browse GetYourGuide for archaeology days and city walks, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

Where to eat first

Eat norteño: the north coast cooks with more heat, goat and beans than Lima, and lunch is the main event. Three first stops:

El Mochica, in the historic centre.

Eat the classics where locals queue — shambar, the wheat, bean and pork soup served on Mondays, and cabrito con frejoles, kid goat stewed with beans. Go at lunch; the pots empty early.

Squalo's, Trujillo.

Order ceviche norteño at the city's best-known seafood house — fish in lime with red onion, yuca, choclo corn and sweet potato, hotter than Lima's version. Midday is ceviche hour.

The cevicherías of Huanchaco, along the malecón.

Graze the beachfront row after Chan Chan — ceviche and chicharrón de pescado with the caballitos stacked on the sand in front of you. Prices drop two streets back.

When to go and what it costs

Caballitos de totora reed boats standing on the sand at Huanchaco beach, with swimmers behind

Trujillo calls itself the city of eternal spring, and mostly earns it: highs of 19 to 28°C all year. December to April is warmest and sunniest — beach weather in Huanchaco. June to September turns cooler and greyer. The exception is El Niño: in strong events the dry north coast takes heavy rain, usually December to April, flooding roads and closing sites — check forecasts then.

Budget in soles at about S/3.44 to US$1 (October 2026). A combi ride is about US$0.50; a centre taxi US$1.50 to 3; Chan Chan or the Huaca S/10 each; a ceviche lunch US$6 to 12; a guided full day US$38 to 60.

Backpacker, on menú lunches and combis: US$30 to 45 a day. Mid-range — a four-star room, restaurant dinners, a guided day: US$80 to 120 a day. Splurge, with the resort hotel and a private tour: over US$200.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for desert archaeology days and cool coastal evenings. This is the full list:

Add the extras: a wide hat for the ruins, where the whole visit is outdoors; a Type A and C adapter; and a swimsuit for Huanchaco, where surfers wear wetsuits most of the year.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

The Liberty monument on Trujillo's Plaza de Armas, with the Cathedral and colonial mansions behind

Spanish runs the city, in the warm norteño register. Trujillo's signature is the marinera — the handkerchief-waving couple's dance the city claims as its own — and its steed, the Peruvian paso horse, bred in the valleys nearby.

Four phrases do most of the work:

Buenos díasgood morningGraciasthank you¿Cuánto cuesta?how much does it cost?La cuenta, por favorthe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand nationals enter visa-free; the officer sets your stay on arrival — typically 90 days, up to 183 days in a 365-day period. Your passport needs six months of validity.

There is no paper form: entry is recorded in the digital TAM Virtual system. Download your TAM record after you land — hotels ask for it, with your passport, for the 18% IGV exemption, and overstays are fined by the day.

Safety and health

Agree every taxi fare before the door closes

Taxis have no meters, and the fare argument happens at the kerb, not at the destination. Use the official airport rank or an app cab, and have the hotel call a trusted taxi after dark.

Watch bags and phones in the centre and at terminals

The common crimes are pickpocketing in crowded streets and markets and snatching at café-table edges. Keep the phone in a pocket between uses and use the hotel safe for passports and spare cards.

Take the desert sun seriously at the ruins

Chan Chan and the Huacas are open adobe with almost no shade, strong UV and afternoon dust. Start at opening time, carry water, and wear the hat.

Drink bottled or filtered water, and eat ceviche at busy places

Tap water is not for drinking here. Ceviche is a midday dish made with the morning's fish — choose the crowded rooms. For anything serious, dial 105.

Trujillo questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

The arrival, the adobe cities and the taxes, in short.

Transfers checked against Trujillo arrival reporting, October 2026; site tickets and hours against Ministry of Culture patterns; entry and the IGV exemption against Migraciones and hotel terms.

Take the official airport taxi or an app cab: TRU is about 10 km northwest, 20 to 30 minutes by road. Official taxis quote S/25 to 40 — agree the fare before you ride, as there are no meters. There is no airport bus; the combi stop sits about a mile from the terminal.

One S/10 ticket, bought at the museum or the gate, covers four stops: the site museum, the Nik An palace inside Chan Chan, Huaca Esmeralda and Huaca Arco Iris. Keep the ticket all day. The sites open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm, and close on Mondays.

No visa for most visitors: US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand nationals enter visa-free, and the officer sets the stay on arrival — typically 90 days, up to 183 days in a 365-day period. Entry is recorded in the digital TAM Virtual system; download your TAM record, because hotels ask for it.

Foreign guests not resident in Peru skip the 18% IGV on lodging while the stay stays under 60 days. Show your passport and TAM record at check-in and pay the hotel directly — third-party payments can lose the exemption, so confirm when you book.

December to April for the warmest, sunniest beach weather, with the Marinera contest in the last week of January as the year's peak. June to September is cooler and greyer. In strong El Niño years, usually December to April, heavy rain can flood the north coast and close sites.

With normal city care, yes. The centre and the main districts are busy and walked by day; the real risks are pickpockets in crowded streets and unmetered-taxi fare disputes. Agree every fare in soles before the door closes, and have the hotel call a trusted taxi after dark.

Fares change — the airport rank, your ride app and the gate ticket office always win.
