Chiang Mai: your first hour after landing

Chiang Mai is northern Thailand's old Lanna capital — a moated square of temples, markets and cafés watched over by Doi Suthep, barely 15 minutes from its own airport. This guide covers the landing and the days after: the TDAC form and the 30-day visa exemption, the ฿150 airport taxi, where to stay inside the moat, and the burning-season smoke that should decide when you come.

The short version

You just landed in Chiang Mai. The airport is barely 4 km from the moat, so you can be temple-side within the hour: file the free TDAC form before you fly, take the ฿150 fixed-fare taxi from the desk in arrivals, and set up data on an Airalo eSIM so Grab works from the kerb.
Best first moves: walk the Old City temple trio before the heat builds, eat khao soi at Lam Duan Fa Ham, and book the sunrise run up Doi Suthep — Chiang Mai tours on GetYourGuide cover it, plus the ethical elephant days. Come November to February; February to April is burning season.

Quick facts

Airport
Chiang Mai International (CNX), about 4 km south-west of the Old City moat One compact airport for the north: mostly domestic flights via Bangkok, plus direct arrivals from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul.
Getting in
About 15 minutes by taxi or Grab: the airport practically touches the city The taxi desk charges a flat ฿150 to city hotels. The RTC Smart Bus R3 loops past Tha Phae Gate for ฿30.
Currency
The Thai baht (฿): cards are fine in hotels and malls, cash still runs the city Markets, songthaews and temple gates want cash. ATMs charge foreign cards about ฿220 a withdrawal, so take out more, less often.
Languages
Thai, with Northern Thai (Kham Mueang) spoken at home English is widely understood in hotels and tours; a sawatdee and a khop khun work wonders.
Time zone
Indochina Time (ICT, UTC+7) all year: Thailand never moves its clocks An hour behind Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; level with Bangkok and Hanoi.
Emergency
191 for police, 1669 for an ambulance, 1155 for the English-speaking Tourist Police Save the Tourist Police number first: staffed around the clock. Private hospitals are excellent but ask for payment or insurance proof first.
Plugs

Tap water
Do not drink it: nobody local does Drink bottled or filtered refill water, sold on every street. The clear tube ice in drinks is factory-made and safe.
Tourist tax
None Thailand's long-planned 300-baht entry fee is still not charged — Approved and postponed for years, it was still not collected as of late 2026. Any site selling it is not official.
Best months
November to February for cool, clear air; think twice about February to April The cool season brings 15 to 30 degrees and mountain views. From February, burning season fills the valley with smoke, worst in March.

Settle in

Touch down inside the city

The moat is a 15-minute ride away.

Set up data before you fly

An Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so Grab, maps and the TDAC confirmation work from arrivals. On longer trips, compare Saily and Yesim.

Run the arrival checklist in this order

File the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within three days before you land, free, and immigration scans the QR code.

Take the fixed-fare taxi from the desk in arrivals

Or order a Grab outside.

Drop your bags

Then walk to the nearest moat gate to fix the Old City's square in your head.

Evening arrivals land well here

The Night Bazaar runs late.

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival

AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation, worth five minutes.

Getting around

A gilded chedi with red temple roofs in Chiang Mai

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

In a hurry? Airport taxi (fixed fare) is the fastest option listed, at about 15 min.

Watching the budget? RTC Smart Bus R3 is the cheapest option listed, at ฿30.

Heavy bags, a group, or a late arrival? Airport taxi (fixed fare) takes you door to door — ฿150, about 15 min.

The Lanna-roofed terminal of Chiang Mai Airport seen across the apron

The Old City is a flat square, about 1.6 km a side, ringed by a moat and old brick walls. Walk it; let songthaews and Grab do the rest. The rides in from the airport:

Across town, the songthaew is the system: flag a red truck, name the place, climb in if the driver nods — ฿30 to 40 a head, agreed before you ride. Grab and Bolt price the trip in the app first. For a driver waiting in arrivals at a fixed price, compare a Kiwitaxi transfer or Welcome Pickups. A rental car only earns its keep on the Doi Inthanon road, price it on AutoEurope.

In the city

Start at Tha Phae Gate, the east gate. Founded in 1296, the moated square still holds more than 30 temples.

Walk the temple trio in the morning cool. Wat Chedi Luang centres on a brick chedi, raised in the 14th and 15th centuries and partly toppled by a 1545 earthquake, which once housed the Emerald Buddha. Next door, Wat Phan Tao is a dark teak hall, once a royal throne hall. At the west end of Rachadamnoen Road, Wat Phra Singh keeps the Phra Sihing Buddha in a gilded chapel. Entry is about ฿50 at the big two; smaller temples free or by donation.

Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside, never climb on a chedi or point your feet at a Buddha image.

Warorot Market (Kad Luang), by the river, is the city's real shopping. The Night Bazaar runs nightly along Chang Klan Road. On Sundays from about 17:00, Rachadamnoen Road closes for the Walking Street, a kilometre of crafts and street food; Saturday's version runs along Wua Lai Road, past Wat Sri Suphan, the silver temple. For café afternoons, drift to Nimman. Browse Chiang Mai on GetYourGuide for temple walks, and compare Klook for activities.

First-timers split two ways: inside the moat, temples at walking distance, or Nimman for cafés and a younger buzz.

Where to eat first

A bowl of khao soi with crispy noodles, pickled greens, lime and shallots alongside

Eat northern from the first meal: this is the home of khao soi, and the cooking is herb-rich and cheaper than almost anywhere in Thailand:

Khao Soi Lam Duan Fa Ham, Charoen Rat Road.

Map → Cross the river to the shophouse ladling khao soi for decades: egg noodles in a golden chicken curry broth, crowned with crisp noodles, for about ฿50 to 80 a bowl. Season it with the pickled greens and lime.

Huen Phen, Ratchamanka Road.

Map → Inside the moat, the full northern table — khao soi, sai ua sausage, chilli dips and gaeng hang lay pork curry, in a house crammed with antiques. Expect a short queue at peak hours.

Chang Phuak Gate night market, outside the north gate.

Map → Graze the evening stalls where the moat meets Maneenopparat Road, the famous stall run by the lady in the cowboy hat plates stewed pork leg over rice nightly. Come hungry and pay cash.

Save room for a cooking class. Browse the listings on GetYourGuide and book a day ahead in high season.

Day trips and more

Three escapes cover the essentials: the mountain temple at dawn, a day with rescued elephants, and the Old City temples with a guide. Carry small cash for temple gates: the counters take no cards.

A naga-flanked path climbing through the forest on Doi Suthep, towards Wat Pha Lat

Doi Suthep at sunrise

Climb the 309 naga steps at dawn: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep as the monks chant, jungle-hidden Wat Pha Lat below, and Wat Umong's tunnel temple to finish. About four hours, from about US$26, rated 4.7 out of 5 from 1,500+ reviews. Check availability →

A rescued elephant and her calf grazing at a sanctuary outside the city

A day with rescued elephants

Spend the day at Living Green Elephant Sanctuary, about an hour and a half south: hand-feed the elephants and walk with them through the forest to the river: no chains, no riding, no performances. A Pad Thai cooking session and bamboo rafting fill a nine-to-ten-hour day, from about US$51, rated 4.9 out of 5 from nearly 500 reviews. Check availability →

The great brick chedi of Wat Chedi Luang, partly toppled by an earthquake in 1545

The Old City temples on foot

Walk the circuit with a local guide: the largest stupa at Wat Chedi Luang, the teak throne hall of Wat Phan Tao, and the mosaic-inlaid sanctuary of Wat Phra Singh. About three hours from about US$13. Check availability →

Leave a spare day for Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain at 2,565 m, about two hours south-west: cloud forest, twin pagodas and waterfalls, ฿300 park entry.

When to go and what it costs

Crowds releasing lanterns into the night sky at the Yi Peng festival

Come November to February for the cool season: clear air, mornings as cool as 15 degrees, and Yi Peng and Loy Krathong in November, . Book beds and tours early; it is peak season.

Come May to October for the green season: afternoon downpours, washed-clean air, green rice fields and the cheapest rooms.

Think hard about February to April: burning season, when farm and forest fires fill the valley with PM2.5 smoke — March is routinely the worst month, and sensitive travellers should pick different dates. Songkran, 13–15 April, is the one reason to brave it.

The airport hop is ฿150 by taxi or ฿30 by bus, a songthaew is ฿30 to 40, khao soi is ฿50 to 80, and the big temples charge about ฿50; Doi Suthep is ฿30, plus a ฿100 park fee collected on the mountain.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for heat, temples and mountain air:

Add a scarf covering shoulders and knees for temples, a warm layer for cool-season mornings and the Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon roads (both summits sit over 1,000 m) and mosquito repellent for green-season evenings. In February to April, pack proper N95 masks.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

Tha Phae Gate and its plaza, the east gate of the old city wall

Thai runs Chiang Mai, spoken softly, with northern Kham Mueang at home; English carries you through hotels and tours. Politeness is grammatical: men end sentences with khrap, women with kha.

Six phrases do most of the work:

Sawatdee khrap / khahelloKhop khunthank youAroi makvery deliciousAo khao soiI would like the khao soiHong nam yoo tee nai?where is the toilet?Lod dai mai?can you drop the price?

Sort the paperwork before you fly. Every foreign visitor must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within the three days before arrival, free, a few minutes, and immigration scans the emailed QR code. It replaced the paper card in May 2025, and it is not a visa. Use only tdac.immigration.go.th: lookalikes charge for a free form.

Most visitors then walk in visa-free. Since 15 September 2026 the exemption gives nationals of 60 countries (the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of the EU among them) 30 days on arrival, down from 60. One 30-day extension costs ฿1,900 at an immigration office. Your passport needs six months' validity; keep proof of onward travel on your phone.

Note what is not charged: the 300-baht entry fee, postponed repeatedly, was still not collected as of October 2026.

Safety and health

Burning-season smoke is the headline risk

From February to April, crop and forest burning across the north pushes PM2.5 into the unhealthy range for weeks, peaking in March. Check the Air4Thai or IQAir reading each morning, wear a fitted N95 on bad days, and let anyone with asthma choose another season.

The roads do the real damage

Motorbike crashes are the commonest way visitors end up in a Thai hospital. Wear a proper helmet every ride; licence and insurance cover only the bike class you are licensed for at home; and treat mountain-road night riding as the risk it is. Songthaews and Grab exist so you do not have to.

Hospitals will ask how you are paying

Private hospitals are modern and well regarded, and the public Maharaj Nakorn anchors the system — but treatment is not free for visitors, and payment or proof of insurance is routinely requested up front. Carry your insurer's details on your phone. Dial 1669 for an ambulance, or 1155 for the Tourist Police.

Tropical basics still apply

Drink bottled or filtered water, not tap; hydrate hard in the hot season, when afternoons pass 35 degrees; use repellent at dawn and dusk in the green season, when dengue mosquitoes are about.

Yes — the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), mandatory since 1 May 2025 for all foreign arrivals, replacing the paper TM6. File it free at tdac.immigration.go.th within the three days before you arrive; immigration scans the emailed QR code. It is not a visa, and any site charging for it is a copycat.

Since 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of the EU — get 30 days visa-free, down from 60.

One 30-day extension costs ฿1,900 at an immigration office. Your passport needs six months' validity, and officers can ask for proof of onward travel.

About 4 km and 15 minutes. The taxi desk in arrivals charges a flat ฿150 to city hotels; Grab and Bolt run about ฿120; the RTC Smart Bus R3 passes Tha Phae Gate for ฿30; red songthaews wait outside the terminal.

November to February, the cool season: clear air, 15 to 30 degrees and the Yi Peng lantern festival in November. Avoid February to April if you can: burning season fills the valley with PM2.5 smoke, worst in March. The May-to-October green season is cheaper, with afternoon downpours.

No — not yet. The planned 300-baht entry fee (150 baht for land arrivals) has been postponed repeatedly; still not collected as of October 2026, and Chiang Mai hotels charge no city stay tax. Do not pay any website or agent offering to arrange it.

Doi Suthep sits about 15 km up the mountain: entry is ฿30, plus a ฿100 national park fee collected on the mountain, and 309 naga steps climb to the temple — shared songthaews run from the university gate for about ฿50 each way. For elephants, choose observation-only sanctuaries with no riding, chains or performances, like the Living Green day below.

Entry rules and fees change — re-check the official TDAC site and your airline before you fly.
