Busan: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at Gimhae, 13 km west of Busan, in South Korea's second city and busiest port — and the arrival runs on rails. One light rail line leaves from across the terminal and hands you to a metro that crosses the whole city, from the old town's fish markets to Haeundae's beach towers, for the price of a coffee. What waits is a city of coasts: a temple on the rocks, a capsule train crawling the shoreline, a hillside village painted every colour, and pork soup at any hour in Seomyeon. This guide walks the arrival in order: the transfer maths, the KTX alternative at Busan Station, where to sleep between the beach and the crossroads, the first three places to eat, the entry forms as they stand in 2026, and the three day trips that matter — Gyeongju, Geoje and the city's own greatest hits.

The short version

You just landed in Busan. Ride the light rail from Gimhae to Sasang and change to Metro Line 2 — about ₩1,800 on a T-money card puts you in Seomyeon in about 40 minutes — then pick your coast: Haeundae's beach towers or the old town's markets. Keep an Airalo eSIM live for Naver Map and train times, and book the Gyeongju and Geoje day tours early — the coast days sell out first.

Quick facts

Airport
Gimhae International (PUS), about 13 km west of the centre The light rail station sits about 30 metres from the international terminal, across from Gate 3.
Getting in
Light rail to Sasang, then Metro Line 2 about ₩1,800 by card; many also arrive by KTX at Busan Station — The KTX from Seoul takes about 2 hours 30 minutes (₩59,800), landing on Metro Line 1 by the old town.
Currency
The South Korean won (KRW, ₩) cards rule, but markets want cash — Pick up a T-money card at the airport convenience store and won from an ATM; global ATMs are marked in English.
Languages
Korean runs everything; English works in hotels, stations and the big sights Download Naver Map first — Google Maps gives no walking directions in Korea — and save the 1330 helpline.
Time zone
Korea Standard Time (UTC+9) all year South Korea never changes its clocks — Same time as Tokyo, an hour ahead of Beijing and Taipei.
Emergency
112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance The 1330 Korea Travel Helpline answers in English around the clock and can interpret in taxis and hospitals.
Plugs
Type C and F sockets, 220 volts the round two-pin European pattern — US and UK plugs need an adapter; most chargers handle the voltage.
Tap water
Safe to drink Busan's tap water meets strict national standards — Many locals still filter it for taste; hotels run filtered stations.
Tourist tax
None South Korea charges no city or hotel tourist tax; room rates already include 10% VAT — The price you see is what you pay. Keep ₩30,000-plus receipts from tax-free shops for an airport VAT refund instead.
Best months
April to May and October to November for mild days and clear coasts Blossom peaks late March and early April; jangma rains run late June to July, typhoons August to September.

Settle in

Land at Gimhae: Busan is a port city, and your first choice is a coast — Haeundae's towers or the old town's markets.

Set up data before you fly — a plan on an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so Naver Map and train times work from the arrivals hall. For a longer trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation — worth five minutes.

Getting around

Gwangan Bridge lit up at night, seen from Gwangalli with the Marine City towers

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Light rail and Metro Line 2

The station sits about 30 metres from the international terminal, across from Gate 3. Buy a T-money card at the arrivals convenience store first — since September 2025 linked light-rail and metro rides are charged at the higher line's single fare, and single-journey tickets cost more. Allow about an hour by rail to Haeundae.

Priceabout ₩1,800Journeyabout 40 min to Seomyeon

Airport limousine bus

Two routes leave from outside arrivals: west through Sasang to Seomyeon and the Lotte Hotel for ₩7,500, and east to Haeundae for ₩9,500. Buses run roughly every 30 to 40 minutes; pay by transport card or cash at the stop.

Price₩7,500 to SeomyeonJourneyabout 1 hr

Taxi from Gimhae Airport

Metered from the rank outside arrivals: about ₩18,000 to ₩25,000 to Seomyeon or Nampo depending on traffic, and about ₩35,000 to ₩45,000 to Haeundae. A surcharge of about 20% applies late at night, and nobody tips in Korea.

Priceabout ₩20,000Journeyabout 35 min to Seomyeon

KTX from Seoul Station

The alternative arrival: fly into Incheon, ride the AREX to Seoul Station and pick up the KTX — fastest trains 2 hours 15 minutes, most about 2 hours 30. Busan Station lands you on Metro Line 1 beside the old town; book ahead on Korail for holiday weekends.

Price₩59,800Journeyabout 2 hrs 30 min

The departure hall of Gimhae International Airport, Busan's gateway west of the city

Two metro lines cross at Seomyeon — Line 1 to the old town, Line 2 to Haeundae — rides from ₩1,600, and the airport light rail joins at Sasang:

Take the light rail in daylight — cheap, frequent, immune to bridge traffic. Take a taxi late at night or for Haeundae with bags: rail runs an hour east, the cab 45 minutes, and nobody tips.

Or pre-book: a Kiwitaxi transfer or Welcome Pickups puts a driver in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving? Price AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep on Geoje and Gyeongju days, not in Seomyeon traffic.

In the city

Start at Gamcheon Culture Village, the pastel hillside stacked above the port, its refugee-era lanes now an open-air gallery of murals and workshops; the Little Prince and the fox watch from the viewpoint. Buy the stamp map (about ₩2,000) at Haneul Maru and go before 10:00 — the lanes are lived-in.

See Haedong Yonggungsa, the temple on the rocks — most Korean temples sit in mountains; this one stands on the shoreline, down 108 steps to the water. Entry is free, open 04:30–19:20 daily (last entry 18:50). Bus 181 from Haeundae Station takes about 45 minutes, a taxi ₩15,000 to ₩20,000 — go early, it's the quiet version.

Ride the Blueline Park at Haeundae: Sky Capsule pods crawl 2 km from Mipo to Cheongsapo in 30 minutes of sea views — ₩40,000 for two, ₩45,000 for three, ₩50,000 for four, one way. Book days ahead; sunset slots go first. The Beach Train runs the same coast from about ₩8,000. Walk back via Dongbaekseom and the Nurimaru APEC House, or browse Busan listings on GetYourGuide for capsule-free ways along it.

Work the old town into one afternoon: Jagalchi Market, Korea's biggest seafood market (05:00–22:00, closed first and third Tuesdays) — buy fish downstairs, eat it upstairs. Cross to BIFF Square for a ssiat hotteok, then Gukje Market and Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park (about ₩12,000). Finish at Gwangalli Beach for the bridge lights — the drone show flies Saturdays — or compare food walks on Klook to go with a local.

Where to eat first

A bowl of dwaeji gukbap, Busan's pork soup, at Songjeong Samdae Gukbap in Seomyeon

Eat close on day one — Busan cooks for itself first: pork soup in Seomyeon, seafood in the old town, cold noodles in Nampo.

Songjeong Samdae Gukbap, 33 Seomyeon-ro 68beon-gil, Busanjin-gu.

Order dwaeji gukbap, Busan's signature bowl — milky pork broth, sliced pork and rice, seasoned with chives, salted shrimp and chilli paste. Served in Seomyeon's gukbap alley since 1946, open around the clock, about ₩9,000. Two minutes from Seomyeon Station Exit 1.

Jagalchi Market, 52 Jagalchihaean-ro, Jung-gu.

Pick your fish downstairs — flatfish, sea bream, live octopus if brave — and carry it upstairs to be cooked or sliced for about ₩5,000 per person. Go before noon; closed first and third Tuesdays.

Halmae Gaya Milmyeon, 56-14 Gwangbok-ro, Jung-gu.

Try milmyeon, cold wheat noodles Busan invented from wartime flour rations — springy noodles in iced beef broth with a chilli-vinegar bite, about ₩9,000 the large bowl. Five minutes from Nampo Station, open 10:30 to 21:30 — the arrival-day lunch.

For guided eating, browse Busan food listings on GetYourGuide and book small-group walks ahead.

Leave a spare morning for Beomeosa, Busan's mountain temple — free, an hour north by metro and bus, best in autumn.

When to go and what it costs

Gwangalli Beach and the Gwangan Bridge on a clear day

Come April to May or October to November for the best version — mild days, clear sea air. Blossom runs late March into early April, the film festival takes Haeundae in October, fireworks light Gwangalli in November.

Come in summer for beach season proper — guarded zones at Haeundae and Gwangalli, July and August — but price in the jangma: late June and July bring weeks of humid rain, August to September typhoon season, when ferries and flights can stop.

Come in winter for dry, bright, crowd-free Busan at its cheapest — the sea wind cuts hard on the beaches, though crowds gather at Yonggungsa for the year's first sunrise.

Budget by fixed costs: metro from ₩1,600, the airport run about ₩1,800, a gukbap about ₩9,000, the Jagalchi table fee about ₩5,000 a head; Gamcheon and Yonggungsa are free. Variables: the room, the Sky Capsule (₩40,000 for two), the day trips.

Stack the arrival maths early: the light rail only loses once three or more split a taxi.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for hills, sea wind and temple steps — Busan stacks its sights on slopes:

Add a modest layer for temples, an umbrella in the jangma months and a swimsuit in season — plus a warmer jacket from November to March, when the wind off the water bites.

Language, visa and entry

KTX trains at the platforms of Busan Station

Korean runs Busan, but the script is friendlier than it looks — signage carries English throughout. Hotel staff and younger locals work in English; market stalls and taxi drivers run on Korean, a translation app and patience.

Six phrases do the work:

안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo)hello감사합니다 (gamsahamnida)thank you얼마예요? (eolmayeyo?)how much is it?화장실이 어디예요? (hwajangsiri eodiyeyo?)where is the bathroom?계산서 주세요 (gyesanseo juseyo)the bill, please부산역 가주세요 (Busanyeok gajuseyo)please take me to Busan Station

Sort entry paperwork before booking anything non-refundable: K-ETA is waived for 22 countries and regions — the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, most of the EU, Japan, Australia and Singapore among them — through 31 December 2026. Unlisted passports apply at k-eta.go.kr before flying (fee ₩10,000); under-18s and over-65s are exempt regardless. Without one, complete the free e-Arrival Card online within three days before arrival — the paper card still exists if you forget.

One health form may still apply: Q-Code, only if you have stayed in or transited a listed quarantine-inspection area — currently parts of the Middle East and Asia and a few US states — or arrive with symptoms. Most visitors skip it; if it applies, register at travelhealth.kdca.go.kr before departure.

Safety and health

Busan is an easy city to feel safe in

Violent crime is rare, petty theft uncommon; the usual cautions cover it — watch your bag in Jagalchi's crush, use licensed taxis or the metro late at night.

Swim inside the guarded season

The season runs July and August, lifeguards patrolling Haeundae and Gwangalli; rip currents are real, jellyfish arrive in late summer, and out of season there are no nets or guards — walk the coast instead.

Respect the monsoon and the typhoon months

Jangma downpours from late June can flood underpasses and soak a day in an hour; August–September typhoons can cancel the Oedo ferries, Blueline capsules and flights. Keep day-trip bookings refundable then, and check the forecast the night before.

Healthcare is excellent, and the numbers are simple

Dial 112 for police, 119 for fire or an ambulance; the 1330 helpline interprets in English around the clock. Pusan National University Hospital is the big teaching hospital; pharmacies (약국) are on every main street.

Facts checked October 2026.

Take the light rail to Sasang, change to Metro Line 2 — about ₩1,800 on a T-money card, 40 minutes to Seomyeon. Limousine bus: ₩7,500 to Seomyeon, ₩9,500 to Haeundae. Taxi: about ₩20,000 to Seomyeon, ₩35,000 to ₩45,000 to Haeundae.

Both work. Gimhae is Busan's airport, 13 km out, light rail into town; or land at Incheon and ride the KTX from Seoul Station — ₩59,800, fastest 2 hours 15 minutes — to Busan Station on Metro Line 1, beside the old town. Take the KTX when Seoul is in the trip; fly to Gimhae when it is not.

Probably not in 2026. K-ETA is waived for 22 countries and regions — the US, Canada, the UK, most of the EU, Japan, Australia and Singapore among them — through 31 December 2026. Other visa-free nationals apply at k-eta.go.kr (₩10,000) before flying; under-18s and over-65s are exempt regardless. Without one, complete the free e-Arrival Card online within three days before arrival.

Haeundae for the beach — sand, Blueline Park and resort towers, an hour by rail from the airport and old town. Seomyeon for transport and food — metro crossroads, gukbap alley, easiest airport run. Nampo and Jagalchi for the old town — markets, street food, Busan Station; best for short stays.

Yes: it meets strict national standards and is safe straight from the tap. Many locals filter or chill it for taste, and most hotels run filtered water stations.

April to May and October to November — mild days, sea air, and the festivals: blossom in early spring, film festival in October, Gwangalli fireworks in November. July and August add jangma rains and typhoon risk to beach season; winter is dry, cold and cheapest.
