Cinque Terre: your first hour after landing

You have just landed in Genoa or Pisa, bound for five villages with no airport of their own — and that is the right way round. The Cinque Terre is a cliff coast that never built a road through itself: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore hang between terraced vineyards and the Ligurian Sea, and one railway does all the work. Waiting: the Sentiero Azzurro above the water, the reopened Via dell'Amore, Monterosso anchovies and local white wine, and villages that empty back to a few hundred residents when the last express leaves. This guide walks the arrival in order: the gateway maths, the Cinque Terre Card, where to sleep, the trails as they stand, and the one-way walking leg everyone gets wrong.

The short version

You just landed in Cinque Terre. No airport, no through road — ride the train to La Spezia, hop the Cinque Terre Express, and you are on a village lane in minutes. Sort your Airalo eSIM before you fly for maps and train times, and book the sunset boat from Monterosso early — the one seat that sells out.

Quick facts

Airport
None in the villages Genoa (GOA) and Pisa (PSA) are the gateways — Both reach La Spezia by train, Genoa in about 1 to 1.5 hours, Pisa in about 1 hour; the express covers the villages. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours door to door.

Settle in

Land at La Spezia Centrale and treat the arrival as a drill: one station, one local train, a village lane at the end. No airport, no through road — you fly to Genoa (GOA) or Pisa (PSA) and let the trains do the rest.

Set up data before you fly — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so train times work from the platform. For a longer trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

Run the arrival checklist in this order:

If a delayed flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp and Compensair check what the airline owes you.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

Train from Genoa Airport (GOA)

The Volabus costs about €6 and takes roughly 30 minutes; direct trains cover Piazza Principe to Monterosso in about 1 hour 20 minutes, from about €15 second class. The Airlink shuttle to Genova Sestri Ponente (about €2) plus a change also works.

Priceabout €21Journeyabout 2 hrs

Train from Pisa Airport (PSA)

Pisa to La Spezia takes about an hour; from La Spezia the express reaches Riomaggiore in about 8 minutes and Monterosso in about 25. The better gateway if Florence or the rest of Tuscany follows.

Pricefrom about €15Journeyabout 2 hrs

Cinque Terre Express

Hops are priced by the day's colour — €5 green, €8 yellow, €10 red — and trains run about every 20 minutes in season. The Treno MS card (€22 to €35 a day) wins on any three-hop day.

Price€5 to €10 per hopJourney8 to 25 min

Taxi or private transfer

Cars stop at the village edge and your hotel can usually meet you there. Worth it for late landings, heavy luggage and groups splitting the fare.

Price€160 to €200Journeyabout 1 hr 45 min

The railway is the road — the table is the whole arrival system. From Genoa airport, the Volabus runs to Genova Piazza Principe for about €6 in roughly 30 minutes; direct trains reach Monterosso in about 1 hour 20 minutes, from about €15. From Pisa airport, the PisaMover plus an hour by train reaches La Spezia.

Inside the park, the express links Levanto, all five villages and La Spezia. Sort the Cinque Terre Card before hopping: the Trekking Card covers the paid trail sections (one day €10, peak €15; two days €17, peak €26.70), and the Treno MS Card adds unlimited express trains (one day €22, €29.50 or €35 by season band). Single hops cost €5 green, €8 yellow, €10 red by the day's colour — so on a red day with three hops, the card wins before lunch.

The ferry is the alternative, running late March to early November between Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso, plus Levanto, Portovenere and La Spezia. A one-day hop-on ticket costs about €39 to €42, single hops €10 to €15; rough seas cancel sailings: never build a departure around the boat.

Flying in late or loaded, a pre-booked Kiwitaxi transfer runs door to door; road-tripping the Riviera first, price the car on AutoEurope — it parks at the gateway, not in the villages.

In the city

Start with the Sentiero Azzurro, the coastal path linking all five villages — but its sections live different lives. The park closed the Corniglia to Vernazza to Monterosso stretch on 10 September 2026 for geological checks, with no reopening date; check park trail status first, and ride the train between those villages. Manarola to Corniglia's coastal section is closed long-term after landslides; the way round is the high path through Volastra, a 2.5 to 3 hour hike. When the Monterosso to Vernazza leg reopens, walk it that way first thing, 1.5 to 2 hours — on listed peak days it runs one-way Monterosso to Vernazza until 2pm.

Take the villages by train in the afternoon, swim off Fegina beach or the Manarola rocks, and end on the Via dell'Amore: the Riomaggiore to Manarola cliff walk reopened in July 2024 after twelve years closed; flat, paved, under a kilometre, included in the Cinque Terre Card — but pre-book a 30-minute slot; it runs one-way. Give day two to the high paths: sanctuary churches above each village, ridge paths through the terraces, and slow Corniglia.

Do this, skip that.

When the trail is open, start the Monterosso to Vernazza walk before 9am, swim at Guvano or the Manarola rocks late in the day, and drink the local white where it grew. Skip the flip-flops — smooth soles are banned on the trails — skip Corniglia by ferry (no dock), skip driving between villages, and skip the midday express with luggage.

Browse boat days and village tours on GetYourGuide before you commit at the harbour, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

After you land in Cinque Terre: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Hotel Porto Roca.
Splurge

Hotel Porto Roca.

Best for the classic splurge — a pool and hot tub on the headland above Fegina beach

On the headland at Via Corone 1, where the old town meets Fegina beach, this four-star is the Monterosso splurge: a seasonal pool and hot tub above the water, plus a restaurant. It rates 9.2 out of 10 on Expedia and closes through winter.

Hotel 5 Terre.
Mid

Hotel 5 Terre.

Best for the reliable mid-range base — pool, buffet breakfast and pets free, a flat walk from Fegina beach

A three-star on Via IV Novembre 21 in Fegina, a short flat walk from station and beach: 54 rooms, an outdoor pool, free buffet breakfast, pets free. It rates 9.0 out of 10 across 288 Expedia reviews.

Hotel Souvenir.
Budget

Hotel Souvenir.

Best for a proper small hotel on a pensione budget — breakfast included and a terrace in Fegina

A two-star pensione on Via Gioberti 24, back from the Fegina seafront: 24 simple rooms, free buffet breakfast, a terrace and staff guests praise. It rates 8.8 to 9.0 out of 10 on Expedia.

Sleep in Monterosso for a hotel and a beach, Vernazza or Manarola for the postcard, Levanto or La Spezia if price beats postcode. Monterosso is the only village with a full run of hotels and the coast's one sandy beach, split between Fegina and the old town. Vernazza and Manarola trade facilities for looks: small hotels, guesthouses and stairs.

Book early: rooms are fixed, July and August sell out, and the tax lands on top.

Where to eat first

A plate of pasta with green pesto and basil, the sauce this coast invented

Eat anchovies — Monterosso's are famous across Liguria. Build your first meal around them: marinated, stuffed or over spaghettini, with trofie al pesto and the local white. Three stops:

Ristorante Miky, Via Fegina 104, Monterosso.

Start on the Fegina seafront at the Michelin Bib Gourmand that sets the village standard — anchovies in half a dozen preparations, fish baked in salt, spaghetti inside a dough crust. Book for dinner.

L'Ancora della Tortuga, Salita Frati Cappuccini 4, Monterosso.

Eat on the cliff between old town and Fegina, in a former wartime bunker — octopus pasta, fish of the day, anchovies to start. Book ahead; walk-ins rely on cancellations.

Da Eraldo, Via Buranco 14, Monterosso.

Finish the trio in the old town at the family room locals eat in — grilled octopus, ravioli and swordfish at moderate prices. Arrive at opening or reserve.

Day trips and more

From the villages, the trips that repay you get you off the railway: the coast by water, by paddle, and the vines above Vernazza.

Paddle to Vernazza

About four kilometres of cliff coast from Monterosso to Vernazza with a guide, past coves and sea caves no path reaches; a sunset option ends with an aperitif in a cove reachable only by sea. Rated 4.8 out of 5 from 153 reviews, from about US$95. Check availability →

Taste Vernazza wine

The CheO family has made Vernazza wine for five centuries; their 1.5-hour visit walks the vineyard with the winemaker, then tastes three Cinque Terre DOC whites, an IGT red and the rare sweet Sciacchetrà on the terrace above the vines. Rated 4.9 out of 5 from 21 reviews. Check availability →

With a fourth day, add a trip: Portovenere across the Gulf of Poets by boat from La Spezia, Levanto's long beach five minutes north, or Portofino via Santa Margherita, about 45 minutes away. Check the return train first — the evening express fills fast.

When to go and what it costs

Budget€5–10
Splurge€10–15,

Monterosso's Fegina beach in high summer, umbrellas above the clear water

Come May to June or September for a swimmable sea and the coast at working temperature — rooms expensive, not impossible.

Come in July and August — every beach club open, every boat running — and pay for it in crowds: the villages fill by eleven and the express runs standing-room. Overnight guests win: day crowds leave by seven and the lanes exhale.

From November to March the coast hibernates: ferries stop, the express thins, many hotels and restaurants close. What remains — empty villages, local prices, a dramatic sea — suits some travellers.

Budget by the fixed costs. The express hop runs €5 to €10 by the day's colour, the Treno MS day card €22 to €35, the Trekking Card €10 to €15, and the ferry day ticket about €39 to €42. The variables are the room and the beach club — both ease outside July and August.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for a vertical coast: trails, boat decks, one good dinner and water. This is the list:

Add swimwear, a dry bag for boat days, and shoes for wet rocks.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

A narrow lane in one of the five villages, pastel houses and green shutters overhead

Italian runs the villages. Hotel staff, boat crews and restaurateurs work in English through the season; station staff and bars run on Italian — greet before you ask.

Six phrases do most of the work:

Buongiornogood morningIl treno per Monterosso, per favorethe train to Monterosso, pleaseIl sentiero è aperto?is the path open?Vorrei le acciughe di MonterossoI would like the Monterosso anchoviesUn bicchiere di vino bianco localea glass of the local white wineGrazie millethank you very much

Italy is in Schengen: most visitors — Americans, Canadians, Britons, Australians — enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport valid at least three months beyond departure. Checks happen at your first Schengen entry, where the EU's Entry/Exit System is now live: fingerprint and photo instead of a stamp.

Ignore any site selling you an ETIAS: it is not in operation yet, and none exists to buy. It is expected in 2027 at €20, through the official EU site only.

Safety and health

Trail conditions change overnight

Sections of the coastal path close after heavy rain and can reopen just as fast — check the park's trail status first. Walking shoes are a rule, not advice: flip-flops and smooth soles have been banned on the trails since 2019 and rangers can fine you.

The paths are cliff paths

Expect narrow ledges, big drops with low or no barriers, and the peak-day one-way system on the Monterosso to Vernazza leg. If heights are not your thing, the villages lose nothing by train.

The sea decides

Most swimming is off rocks and small pebble beaches without lifeguards, and the water drops deep quickly. Swim where locals swim, and accept that boats and ferries cancel when the sea gets up — swimming is weather-dependent.

Crowds are the main hazard

The villages are quiet and safe, but midday platforms and packed express trains are classic pickpocket ground. Keep phone and wallet zipped away between stations.
