Pucón: your first hour after landing

You have just landed at La Araucanía (ZCO), the Temuco airport about 105 km west of Pucón — a small lakeside adventure town on Lake Villarrica, under the Villarrica volcano. This guide covers the ride in, where to sleep from a design landmark to a lakefront hostel, the PDI tourist card that wipes the 19% hotel IVA, the first empanadas, and the volcano, forest and hot springs days that fill day two.

The short version

You just landed in Pucón. There is no airport in town — you flew into Temuco (ZCO), about 105 km away, so ride the direct JAC bus or a pre-booked transfer with an Airalo eSIM live for maps, keep your PDI tourist card safe for the 19% hotel IVA exemption, and book the weather-sensitive volcano climb first through GetYourGuide.

Quick facts

Airport
La Araucanía International (ZCO), near Temuco, about 105 km by road from Pucón Pucón's own small airfield takes private flights only. Almost everyone arrives on a domestic flight into ZCO, or by long-distance bus.
Getting in
Direct JAC bus about CLP 10,000, private transfer from about US$55, 1.5 to 2 hours Buses JAC runs direct coaches from ZCO, and frequent buses from Temuco city via Villarrica. Pre-booked transfers are door-to-door.
Currency
Chilean peso (CLP), about CLP 950 to US$1 in October 2026 Cards work at hotels and most restaurants; carry pesos for buses, park entrances and rural hot springs.
Languages
Spanish, with English in hotels and tour offices Outfitters work in English; drivers and small shops run on Spanish — the phrase chips below cover the essentials.
Time zone
Chile Time UTC-3 in October 2026, on daylight saving since 6 September; UTC-4 in winter — Continental Chile springs forward in September and back in April, so October arrivals are on summer time.
Emergency
133 for police (Carabineros), 131 for an ambulance, 132 for fire Chile has no single all-services number — save all three. Pucón's hospital is in town.
Plugs
Type C and Type L sockets, 220 volts The three-pin Type L catches most visitors out. North American and British plugs need an adapter.
Tap water
Safe to drink in Pucón the town supply is treated and locals drink it — Refill before hikes. In rural cabañas on well water, ask the host.
Tourist tax
No city lodging tax and foreign tourists skip the 19% IVA on hotel rooms at registered hotels — It needs payment in foreign currency or by foreign card, plus passport and PDI tourist card at check-in. Unregistered lodgings cannot offer it.
Best months
December to March for summer lake swimming, rafting and the most reliable volcano-climb weather — October and November are shoulder season: ski season ending, rafting starting, prices well below January.

Settle in

Touch down at La Araucanía (ZCO) and accept the shape of this arrival: the airport is outside Temuco, about 105 km and 1.5 to 2 hours from Pucón. Sort the transfer before you land.

Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps and bus times work from the terminal. For a longer Chile trip, compare Saily and Yesim.

The arrival checklist:

If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Getting around

Journey times are approximate and refer to the listed stop — not necessarily your hotel. Allow extra time for waiting, walking, and connections.

JAC direct bus

Direct Buses JAC coaches from outside ZCO arrivals to the JAC terminal in Pucón; current listings show departures roughly every four hours and fares in the US$5 to 14 range — check the day's times before you fly

Priceabout CLP 10,000 (about US$11)Journeyabout 1 hr 50 min

Bus via Temuco

Airport bus or taxi into Temuco, then JAC from its Balmaceda terminal — onward buses to Pucón via Villarrica leave about every 30 minutes through the day; each company uses its own Temuco terminal, so confirm which one

Priceabout CLP 7,000 (about US$8)Journeyabout 2 hr 30 min

Private transfer

Pre-booked car or van, met in arrivals and driven straight to your door; listings quote about US$55 to 80 per vehicle depending on size — the per-person cost collapses for groups and gear-heavy arrivals

Pricefrom about US$55 per vehicleJourneyabout 1 hr 30 min

Rental car

Desks inside ZCO arrivals; the drive runs south on Route 5, then east via Villarrica along the lake — a car earns its keep for Huerquehue, Caburgua and the hot springs, and is a burden nowhere, as Pucón parks easily

The copper-clad terminal of La Araucanía Airport (ZCO) outside Temuco, reflected in its forecourt pool

Pucón has no airport of its own: you land at La Araucanía International (ZCO), the Temuco airport in Freire, and ride east via Villarrica to the lake. Pucón itself is small and flat, and most beds sit within a 15-minute walk of the centre. The rides in from ZCO:

Choose the direct bus when a departure lines up — frequencies are limited, roughly every four hours on current listings, so check the day's times before you fly. Otherwise change in Temuco: buses onward leave about every 30 minutes. The overnight alternative is the direct Santiago to Pucón bus (Buses JAC, semi-cama from CLP 17,800).

Prefer to be met? A Kiwitaxi transfer or a Welcome Pickups driver puts a name board in arrivals at a fixed price. Driving yourself, price the pickup on AutoEurope first — a car earns its keep for Huerquehue, Caburgua and the hot springs.

In town, walk. Local buses and colectivos cover Villarrica and the Caburgua road; taxis agree a fare before you ride.

In the city

Start at the lake. Walk down to La Poza and Playa Grande, Pucón's black-sand town beach on Lake Villarrica, and look south: the white cone in the view is Villarrica volcano, smoking gently most days.

Stroll the centre next — a grid of wooden-fronted shops, outfitters and cafés around the Plaza de Armas and along Fresia and O'Higgins. This is where you book and kit up: climbs, rafting, canyoning, hot springs and Huerquehue trips leave from offices within a few blocks, and prices are worth comparing in person.

Climb La Poza park's small hill for the postcard angle over the marina, then follow the costanera as the light drops — on clear evenings the volcano turns pink above the lake. Finish at the artisan stalls near the plaza.

Book the headline days early — summit climbs cancel for wind and cloud often. Browse GetYourGuide for climb, park and hot springs days, and compare Klook when stacking activities.

After you land in Pucón: Bookable experiences

Where to stay your first nights

Hotel Antumalal.
Splurge

Hotel Antumalal.

Best for the design splurge — a Bauhaus-style landmark in a private park above Lake Villarrica, 2 km from the centre

Sleep at Km 2 on the Villarrica to Pucón road, 2 km from the centre — a design landmark in a private park above Lake Villarrica: rooms, suites and chalets with fireplaces and panoramic glass over the water, paths through waterfalls and native trees to the shore, and the Spa Antumaco's indoor heated pool. Book it for lakeside calm.

Hotel Pucon Green Park.
Mid-range

Hotel Pucon Green Park.

Best for a full-service garden base east of the centre, with volcano views and wood-fired hot tubs

Stay on Camino Internacional 4150, east of the centre — a stone and timber hotel in big gardens under the volcano: buffet breakfast, the Las Hortensias restaurant, a seasonal outdoor pool and wood-fired hot tubs after the trail. Book it for a full-service base that still feels like countryside.

Luckys Hostel.
Budget

Luckys Hostel.

Best for hostel beds in Pucón itself — twelve minutes from the beach

Bed down at Colo Colo 111 — the only hostel in Pucón itself, twelve minutes from the beach. Book it for volcano-town budget beds without leaving town.

Base in town on a first visit — the centre and La Poza put restaurants, outfitters and buses on foot. The roads west and east hold the quieter lodges and cabañas, better with a car.

Book well ahead for January and February, when Chilean summer fills the town. Keep passport and PDI tourist card ready at check-in: at registered hotels, foreign-currency or foreign-card payment takes the 19% IVA off the room.

Where to eat first

Empanadas de pino, Chile's baked beef empanadas, on a serving tray

Eat Chilean first. The order of the day is empanadas de pino — baked, filled with seasoned beef, onion, olive and egg — then lake fish, Mapuche-influenced kitchens using merkén (smoked chilli), and craft beer after the climb day. Three first stops:

Puerto Pucón, on the lakefront.

Eat lake fish and Chilean seafood at the town's best-known seafood table, near La Poza. Dinner wants a booking in season.

La Trattoria da Pietro, in the centre.

Graze wood-fired Italian in a cosy wooden dining room — the pasta stop returning climbers end up at. Arrive early or reserve.

Café de la P, on Fresia.

Start slowly at the café locals treat as their living room — coffee, cakes and a terrace for watching the town gear up for the volcano.

For food tours further afield, browse the Pucón listings on GetYourGuide.

Day trips and more

Three escapes cover what Pucón is for: the volcano, the araucaria forest park, and the hot springs you will want after both. Allow at least three nights — climb cancellations are common, and a spare day is the difference between summiting and nearly summiting.

Climbers crossing the snow below the smoking crater of Villarrica volcano

Climb Villarrica volcano

Eight hours from a 6 am start: an equipment check the day before, a drive to the base at 1,200 m, then five to six hours up snow and glacier with crampons and ice axe to the active crater, and a descent sliding the snow chutes. Gear is provided; the alert level and weather decide — rated 4.9, from about US$190. Check availability →

Araucaria trees above a still lagoon in Huerquehue National Park

Huerquehue National Park hiking tour

Nine hours with pickup: the Los Lagos trail climbs from 780 m to 1,350 m through native forest to the Tinquilco, Toro, Verde and Chico lakes, past waterfalls. Araucarias and volcano views the whole way up, from about US$130. Check availability →

The red walkways and waterfall of the Geometric Hot Springs in Villarrica National Park

Geometric Hot Springs

Eight hours via Licanray and Coñaripe: 16 thermal pools between 35 and 42°C along a ravine in Villarrica National Park, joined by red wooden walkways, with cold plunges and a fireside café. Go after the climb, from about US$133. Check availability →

Leave a half-day for Ojos del Caburgua's turquoise pools and waterfalls, and Lake Caburgua's black-sand beach.

When to go and what it costs

Lake Caburgua near Pucón, its shore under a summer sky

December to March is high summer: warm days, lake swimming, rafting at full flow and the most reliable climb windows — with January crowds and prices to match. October, now, is shoulder season: ski season winding down, rafting starting, waterfalls full, the town quiet. March and April bring autumn colour and lower prices. June to September is winter.

Budget in pesos, at about CLP 950 to US$1 (October 2026). A backpacker in a dorm, on empanada lunches and local buses: about US$40 to 55 a day. Mid-range — garden hotel, restaurant dinners, one guided day: US$120 to 180 a day. A splurge day passes US$350.

What to pack

Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.

Pack for four seasons in one day — lake sun at noon, volcano wind by afternoon, a cold night off the water. This is the full list:

Add the Pucón extras: swim kit for the lake and hot springs, a warm layer for summit days even in summer, and proper boots if you are climbing — operators supply crampons and technical gear, not fitness. A Type C and L adapter matters here.

Language, visa and entry

✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders

The black-sand beach at Lake Caburgua, near Pucón

Spanish runs everything, in a region of strong Mapuche presence — Pucón, Villarrica, Caburgua and Trancura are Mapudungun names. Greet first, keep it unhurried, and people will slow down for your Spanish. Tour offices and hotels work in English daily.

Four phrases do the work:

Buenos díasgood morningGraciasthank you¿Cuánto cuesta?how much does it cost?La cuenta, por favorthe bill, please

Sort your entry paperwork before you book anything non-refundable. US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand passport holders enter visa-free for up to 90 days — no fee, and no reciprocity fee: that charge is long gone. Your passport needs to be valid for your stay.

On entry, the PDI border police issue a tourist card — the Tarjeta Única Migratoria slip. Keep it with your passport: hotels need it for the 19% IVA exemption, and you surrender it on exit. Lost it, and a replacement comes from the PDI's online portal — a delay you do not need. Complete the SAG declaration honestly for food, plant or animal products: Chile screens all luggage, and snacks from the plane count.

Safety and health

Climb Villarrica only guided, and only when it is open

Villarrica is one of South America's most active volcanoes, monitored by SERNAGEOMIN; in the most recent reports checked here its alert stood at Green, the lowest level, with the lava lake active in the crater. Green means normal for this volcano, not risk-free — CONAF authorises ascents only through registered operators, and wind, cloud or a raised alert close the climb. Check the alert before booking and climbing, and keep a spare day.

Treat the rivers and the lake with respect

The Trancura's upper section runs class IV rapids — raft it with a certified operator, in the full kit they issue, and swim only where guides direct. Lake Villarrica is cold below the surface even in January; La Poza is the supervised place to swim.

Keep town common sense after dark

Pucón is a busy, walked resort town, but phones and bags still walk from café tables and beach towels in season. Walk lit centre streets late, taxi the dark road stretches, and use the hotel safe for passports.

Respect altitude, sun and volcano weather

The summit day gains about 1,400 metres on snow: glacier sun reflects twice as hard, and operators turn back struggling climbers — that is the system working. Carry water, leave your route with your lodging, and dial 131 (ambulance), 133 (police) or 132 (fire) for anything serious.

Frequently asked questions

The Temuco transfer, the tourist card and the volcano, in short.

Transfers checked against Rome2Rio, Busbud and recorrido.cl listings, October 2026; entry rules against US State Department and 2026 consular guidance; volcano status against Smithsonian GVP and SERNAGEOMIN reporting; the IVA exemption against the foreign-tourist hotel rules.

Buses JAC runs direct coaches from outside ZCO arrivals to its Pucón terminal, about 1 hr 50 min and about CLP 10,000, but only about every four hours. If none lines up, change in Temuco to the frequent JAC buses via Villarrica (about 2 hr 30 min in total), or pre-book a private transfer from about US$55 per vehicle.

No, for most visitors: US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand passport holders get up to 90 days visa-free, passport valid for the stay. There is no fee and no reciprocity fee — that charge is long gone. On entry the PDI issues a tourist card slip; keep it for the IVA exemption, and surrender it on exit.

Only guided, and only when it is open. CONAF authorises the ascent through registered Pucón operators, with crampons, ice axe and gear provided. SERNAGEOMIN monitors the volcano — in the most recent reports checked here the alert stood at Green, the lowest level — but wind, cloud or a raised alert cancel climbs often, so keep a spare day.

Foreign tourists do not pay the 19% IVA on lodging at hotels registered with the tax service (SII) when they pay in foreign currency or by foreign card and show passport and PDI tourist card at check-in. Unregistered cabañas and hostels may not offer it, so ask before you book.

December to March: warm days, lake swimming, full rafting season and the most reliable climb weather — January and February busiest and priciest. October and November are shoulder season; June to September is ski season.

With normal resort-town care, yes. The centre and lakefront are busy and walked late; the risks are theft from café tables and beach towels in season, and the outdoors itself — cold lake water, class IV rapids, volcano weather. Use certified operators and save the emergency numbers: 133 police, 131 ambulance, 132 fire.

Peso fares and volcano conditions change — the operator, SERNAGEOMIN and your hotel always win.
