You have just landed at Villafranca, Verona's airport 10 km southwest of the walls — a Roman city of pink marble where a working amphitheatre anchors Piazza Bra and Juliet's balcony draws the crowds. This guide covers the Airlink ride in, where to sleep from a palazzo splurge to a budget chain bed, the city tax, the first risotto and Amarone, and the card, class and wine hills that fill day two.

You just landed in Verona. The airport sits 10 km southwest of the walls — the move is the €7 Airlink bus to Porta Nuova, every 20 minutes, with an Airalo eSIM live for maps, the city tax capped at four nights, and the days that sell out first — the Arena card, the pasta class and the Amarone hills — worth booking ahead through GetYourGuide.
Quick facts
Airport
Verona Villafranca Valerio Catullo (VRN), about 10 km southwest of the centre A compact two-terminal airport: Terminal 1 departures, Terminal 2 arrivals. Most international visitors connect via Rome, Munich, Frankfurt or London.
Getting in
ATV Airlink 199 bus €7 to Porta Nuova station in about 15 minutes, taxi about €30 to €35, about 20 minutes The bus runs every 20 minutes through the day. There is no rail station at the airport — Porta Nuova is the railhead.
Currency
Euro (EUR) cards work almost everywhere in the centre — Carry small cash for market stalls, church donations and the tourist tax, which some hosts still collect in cash.
Languages
Italian, with English widely spoken in hotels, sights and restaurants Verona sits in the Veneto; menus and signage are Italian first. The phrase chips below cover the daily essentials.
Time zone
Central European Time UTC+1, and UTC+2 on daylight saving from late March to late October — October arrivals land on summer time until the last Sunday of the month.
Emergency
112 for all services police, ambulance and fire on one number — The number is free from any phone, and operators can transfer English speakers.
Plugs
Type C, F and L sockets, 230 volts The three-pin Type L is common in older buildings. North American and British plugs need an adapter.
Tap water
Safe to drink Verona's supply is treated, and the public fountains run drinking water — Refill at the fountain rather than buying bottles in the old town.
Tourist tax
Current operator listings put 3-star hotels at €3.50, 4-star at €4.50 and 5-star at €5.00, with a 20% cut at ages 15 to 25 and under-15s exempt. The Comune's older published table differs — see Sources.
Best months
April to June and September to October warm, walkable and outside the opera crush — The Arena opera season runs 12 June to 12 September 2026 and fills the city; winter is cold, quiet and cheapest outside the fair weeks.

Land at Villafranca and the first hour runs itself: arrivals is small, the Airlink bus stop sits outside the door, and Porta Nuova station is 15 minutes away. The station leaves you a short walk, or one quick bus ride, from Piazza Bra.
Set up data before you leave home — an Airalo eSIM loads in minutes, so maps work from the arrivals hall. For a longer Italy trip, compare Saily and Yesim.
The arrival checklist, in order:
Keep your passport handy — hotels register every guest with the police and collect the city tax at check-in
Ride the Airlink bus, a rank taxi or your pre-booked transfer in — confirm the meter is running, or the fare, before the door closes
Keep a few euros in coins handy for the first bus ride and market run
If a delayed or cancelled flight wrecked the arrival, AirHelp checks whether the airline owes you compensation.

Verona's old town is a walking city: Piazza Bra, the Arena and Piazza delle Erbe sit within 20 minutes of Porta Nuova station, and the airport run has one budget anchor — the ATV Airlink. The rides in from VRN:
Choose the bus solo with light bags; a taxi or transfer late at night, in opera-season traffic, or with a group — per car, a transfer beats four bus fares plus the station walk. A car earns its keep for Valpolicella and Lake Garda, not inside the walls.
In town, ATV city buses radiate from Porta Nuova and Piazza Bra; validate every ticket on boarding. Taxis cannot be hailed in the street — use the ranks at Piazza Bra and the station, or call Radio Taxi Verona.
In the city
Start at the Arena in Piazza Bra.
Walk the ellipse of the Roman amphitheatre built around AD 30 — third-largest of its kind still standing, and still at work: on opera nights the stone fills with 13,000 people and candles. Come back at dusk when the pink marble glows.
Climb into the old town through Porta Borsari.
Follow Corso Porta Borsari to Piazza delle Erbe, the Roman forum turned market square, then Piazza dei Signori and the Scaliger tombs next door. The Torre dei Lamberti lift takes you above the terracotta roofs.
Cross the Adige at Ponte Pietra.
Walk the Roman bridge to the Teatro Romano, then climb to Castel San Pietro for the postcard view back over the rooftops and the river bend. It is the best free hour in the city.
Give Juliet half an hour, no more.
See the balcony and the bronze statue in the Casa di Giulietta courtyard early or late to dodge the crush, then spend the saved time in San Zeno, the Romanesque basilica across the river. Browse GetYourGuide for the bookings below, comparing Klook when stacking activities.
After you land in Verona: Bookable experiences
Where to stay your first nights
Splurge
Due Torri Hotel.
Best for the opera-night splurge — a 14th-century palazzo with a rooftop terrace and spa
Sleep at Piazza Sant'Anastasia 4 in the old town — the city's grand 5-star house: 89 rooms in a 14th-century palazzo, a rooftop terrace over the rooftops, a spa, and breakfast included. Book it for the opera-night splurge, ten minutes from the Arena on foot.
Best for a station-side mid-range base — free guest bikes and a praised breakfast
Stay at Corso Porta Nuova 88, nine minutes from Porta Nuova station — a 4-star with a pillow menu, free bikes for guests, a bar and a praised breakfast spread. Book it for the station-side base that still walks to Piazza Bra in ten minutes.
Best for budget beds by the Verona Sud exit — free Wi-Fi, parking and fair-week value
Bed down at Via Enrico Fermi 13b in the south of the city, by the Verona Sud motorway exit — the chain's 84-room house: free Wi-Fi, parking on site, breakfast at €8.50, and the lowest reliable rates of these three. Book it for fair weeks and road trips, with a city bus or a short drive into the centre.
Base inside the walls or along Corso Porta Nuova on a first visit — the old town for opera nights on foot; the station avenue for the airport bus at the door and calmer rates.
Book ahead for opera season, Vinitaly in April and the big Veronafiere weeks, when rates spike across the city. Every host collects the city tax on top of the rate — budget €1.50 to €5.00 per person per night, capped at four nights.
Where to eat first
Eat what the Veneto grows: risotto, fresh pasta and Amarone country cooking. Three first stops:
Osteria del Bugiardo, on Corso Porta Borsari.
Drink a glass of Valpolicella at the counter of this old-town wine bar, with cicchetti and cured meats from the family winery. Go for the pre-dinner hour, standing at the bar like a local.
Trattoria al Pompiere, off Piazza delle Erbe.
Eat the city's classics in a wood-panelled dining room — risotto all'Amarone, bigoli pasta and the house cured-meat trolley. Book ahead; it fills with Veronese families, not tour groups.
Pasticceria Flego, near Piazza Bra.
End with the city's sweet ritual: a slice of pandoro, the golden Christmas cake Verona gave Italy, with coffee at the marble counter. The historic café has poured since the 1960s.
For food and wine tours, browse the Verona listings on GetYourGuide and book a slot for your first free evening.
Day trips and more
Three bookings cover Verona's essentials: the card that unlocks the city, the class that teaches its table, and the hills that fill its glasses. All three are genuinely Verona trips — see Sources on what was left out.

DIY instead: trains from Porta Nuova reach Peschiera del Garda in about 15 minutes and Venice in just over an hour, no booking needed beyond the ticket.
When to go and what it costs
Be honest about the opera effect: from 12 June to 12 September 2026 the Arena festival runs some 50 evenings, and the city prices accordingly — full hotels, busy restaurants, electric nights. April, May and October trade the opera for space and softer rates, with days near 20°C. The fair calendar is the second driver: Vinitaly in April and Marmomac in autumn spike prices midweek. Winter is cold and foggy, and the cheapest season outside the Christmas markets.
Budget in euros. A city bus ride is about €1.50 to €2; an espresso at the counter about €1.20; a trattoria main €14 to €22.
A backpacker on market lunches and city buses: €55 to €75 a day. Mid-range — a Corso Porta Nuova room, osteria dinners, one guided day: €140 to €200 a day. A splurge day with the Due Torri and Arena stalls seats passes €400.
What to pack
Tap items to check them off — your list is saved on this device.
Pack for a walking city of stone lanes and river wind — layers first, smart-casual for opera nights second. This is the full list:
Add the Verona extras: a Type C, F and L adapter, a smart layer for the Arena after dark — the stone holds the day's heat, then gives it back slowly — and a cushion if you book the unnumbered stone steps.
Language, visa and entry
✓ Visa-free entry for eligible passport holders
Italian runs the city, warmed by Veneto hospitality — expect the spritz at six, the passeggiata at seven, and English in every hotel, sight and central restaurant. Beyond the centre, a few phrases open doors.
Four phrases do most of the work:
Buongiornogood morningGraziethank youQuanto costa?how much does it cost?Il conto, per favorethe bill, please
Sort your entry paperwork before booking anything non-refundable. Most visitors — US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand nationals among them — enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 across the Schengen area. Non-EU arrivals now register in the Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since 10 April 2026: fingerprints and a facial image at the first border crossing, no more passport stamps.
ETIAS is not in operation: there is no application to file and no fee to pay, and any website selling an ETIAS authorisation today is fake — apply only when the EU announces a launch, on the official site. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date.
Safety and health
Watch the opera-night crowds, not the streets
Verona is a calm, walked-late city; the real risk is pickpocketing in the Arena queues, the Juliet courtyard crush and around Porta Nuova. Keep phones and wallets zipped in those three funnels.
Respect the river and the stone
The Adige runs fast and cold under its bridges, and the old town's polished stone turns slick in rain. Swim only at guarded spots outside the centre, and watch your step on wet marble.
Ride licensed and agree the fare
White metered taxis from ranks, the Airlink bus, or a transfer booked at a fixed price — skip anyone touting for rides inside the terminal, and keep the meter running as your receipt.
Know the one number and the water rule
Dial 112 for police, ambulance or fire. Tap water is safe, pharmacies are marked by a green cross and handle most minor trouble, and travel insurance covers the rest — carry it.
The arrival, the tax and the opera effect, in short.
Fares checked against ATV Verona and Verona Airport listings, October 2026; entry rules against the European Commission EES and ETIAS pages; the tax against the Comune di Verona table and current property listings.
Ride the ATV Airlink 199 bus: non-stop from outside arrivals to Verona Porta Nuova station, about 15 minutes, €7, every 20 minutes through the day. A metered taxi takes about 20 minutes at roughly €30 to €35; there is no station at the airport.
The old town inside the walls for opera nights and sightseeing on foot. Corso Porta Nuova, between the station and Piazza Bra, for the airport bus at the door, calmer rates and an easy ten-minute walk to the Arena.
Yes, for most visitors: US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand nationals enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180 across Schengen. EES biometric registration is live at the border; ETIAS is not in operation, so pay no site that offers it.
Per person per night, set by category: current listings put 3-star hotels at €3.50 and 4-star at €4.50, up to €5.00 at 5-star, capped at four nights. Ages 15 to 25 pay 20% less and under-15s are exempt. Your host collects it, often in cash.
April to June and September to October: warm days and walkable crowds. The Arena opera season, 12 June to 12 September, is the spectacle — and the price peak, with fair weeks in April and autumn close behind. Winter is cold, quiet and cheapest.
Yes, with ordinary city care. The centre and station avenue are busy and walked late; the risks are pickpockets in the Arena queues and the Juliet courtyard crush. After dark, walk the lit avenues and take licensed taxis for the last stretch.
Fares change — ATV Verona, the Comune and your ride app always win.

Transfers against ATV Verona and Verona Airport: Villafranca (VRN) is about 10 km out; the Airlink 199 runs every 20 minutes at €7, valid 75 minutes (Welcome Pickups, thenomadvisor and Moovit agree). Taxi conflict printed, not hidden: guides quote €20 to €30, €25 to €30 and €35 to €45 for the same airport ride, and one June 2026 rider reports €50 in traffic — this guide prints about €32 and tells you to watch the meter. Tourist tax against the Comune di Verona: its published table (2024) lists hotels at €1.50 (1-star) to €5.00 (5-star), capped at 4 nights; operator summaries revised 2025 list 3-star at €3.50 and 4-star at €4.50, and B&B Hotel Verona's Expedia listing confirms €3.50 per person per night (€2.80 at ages 15 to 25, under-15s exempt, 4-night cap) — the guide prints the current €3.50 and €4.50 bands and flags the older table here. Opera against arena.it: the 103rd festival ran 12 June to 12 September 2026, about 50 evenings. Entry against the European Commission: EES fully operational since 10 April 2026; ETIAS not in operation, no applications collected, fake-site warnings current. GetYourGuide hub verona-l389 opened and title-verified as Verona tours; its listings include Padua, Gardaland and Milan and Bergamo departures, which were excluded as neighbouring-city leakage — the City Card and the pasta class were opened and read (US$37 and US$49), and the Amarone tour is taken from the opened hub listing (US$119).
